04.01.2022 PE Week (original article and photos here: https://www.reynellaec.sa.edu.au/news/pe-week/) The Colour Run kicked off our 2020 PE Week at REC, to encourage staff and students to live a healthy and active lifestyle.... Primary students took part in sports and activities on oval at lunchtimes, as well as tennis clinics run by Tennis Australia. Secondary students had the opportunity for some healthy competition against their teachers in the popular staff vs students sports matches, cheered on by their peers. On Monday, the teachers won volleyball against the Year 9 boys 2 sets to 0. Teachers also took out the basketball game on Tuesday by 2 points. However students got their revenge on Wednesday by beating the teachers’ netball team by 5 goals. Staff got into the spirit of the week with themed dress ups each day. Their 80s retro sports attire were a sight to behold, and the whole school joined in on Tuesday with a favourite sports team casual day, with donations going to the new gym facilities. Sadly the week was cut short by the lockdown, but this fun and inclusive week will encourage us to be active all year round. 27th November 2020
04.01.2022 Controlling Weeds in Urban Habitat at Parkapiki (Byards Road Wetland) (original article and photos here: https://www.reynellaec.sa.edu.au//controlling-weeds-in-ur/) REC Encounter students have been working with Green Adelaide Education and the Natural Areas Conservation team at the City of Onkaparinga to improve the biodiversity around the Byards wetland by controlling weeds.... Parkapiki (the traditional name for the wetland) was built in 2013 to put water back into the aquifer and provide valuable urban habitat for local animal species. Over 100 species of birds have also been seen there. Leanne Lawrence (City of Onkaparinga) and Rob Wallace (Green Adelaide Education hosted at the City of Onkaparinga) are working with Mr Dutton who teaches the Encounter group. The students have spent several lessons over a number of weeks removing an invasive weed called Fumitory (Fumaria sp.), which smothers the local native plants. Their regular efforts have made quite a difference to the stretch of path in the centre of the wetland and Mr Dutton is looking forward to expanding the project to include other classes next year. 30th November 2020
