11.01.2022 An update from the NSW RFS Commissioner - Focusing on what matters most - your monthly update I’m pleased to provide a further update on some of our nine priority projects. Our nine priority projects focus on the things that matter most to our members and one of the items which has been raised consistently has been the type of helmet provided by the Service. It’s only fair that volunteers expect and have access to a high standard of helmet which allows you to do your role ...and get home safely. That’s why I’m pleased to advise that the Service has now signed a contract with Pacific Helmets, to provide BR9 bush fire helmets to our members. The helmets will come standard with a visor, torch holder and bracket for earmuffs. Items like torches and earmuffs will also be available through the NSW RFS catalogue. Rolling out a new range of helmets will take some time because of the production ramp up and delivery process, but we expect these be available from early next year. We’ll be providing more details about the rollout and delivery of the helmets when available. This is a major achievement for the Service and an investment in our people, and it’s been made possible through the support of the NSW RFS and Brigades Donations Trust and the incredible support of the community across the last season. The Trust has agreed to provide up to $9 million to accelerate the rollout of the helmets and I’m sure you will agree that delivering improved head protection for our members is a good use of publicly donated funds. We’re also making progress on other priority projects, including the integration of farm fire units into our operations. On Friday, I was pleased to join with our Minister, David Elliott, and James Jackson who is the president of NSW Farmers, who we have partnered with on this project. We released a new resource for farmers and brigade members which encourages the use of UHF Channel 5 as a standard channel to communicate in the initial stages of an incident, to help share information and prioritise the protection of assets. The Member Availability project is also making progress. As we’ve previously announced, the NSW RFS has engaged Emerg which has developed the BART app that’s in use by many brigades. As part of this engagement, we will have our own app called RFS ACTIV which will be available later this year. In preparation for the new app and other priority projects, it’s important that members update their contact details through MyRFS. These systems will be reliant on the accuracy of your data. You can read more about the announcement of RFS ACTIV here. These are just some of the recent highlights of our priority projects, and we’ll be sharing more regular updates as we continue to deliver benefits to our members. I’m also looking forward to sharing more updates from across the organisation this Wednesday night on NSW RFS Connect. You can tune in from 7pm Wednesday 30 September at www.rfs.nsw.gov.au/connect Regards Rob See more
