23.01.2022 RFT’s Mental Health Nurse Program is accessible to adults living in Southern Tasmania experiencing significant mental health concerns. We are pleased to share some feedback from a participant in the Mental Health Nurse Program: As a patient of the MHNP since the beginning of the year, I wanted to share my very positive experience with this program. My GP referred me to The Richmond Fellowship program after I suered a particularly traumatic emotional ‘meltdown’. The Fellowsh...ip was highly recommended to my GP by another GP at her clinic. Quite simply, I was unable to manage my life any more. Meals, regular showers, outings, getting to appointments, even leaving my at, became daily challenges for me. As a suerer of PTSD, Social Anxiety, Dissociative Disorder and Chronic Fatigue, I was under psychiatric and psychological care. Yet I needed more hands on, regular mental health support. My MH nurse fullled that role with compassion, empathy, patience and commitment to helping me slowly heal. He monitored (and managed!) my medication, sleep patterns, exercise program, diet and nutrition, social connections, as well as my mood swings. I could not have hoped for a more caring, dedicated and professional nurse and carer. My MH nurse was there for me in a way that my other health professionals could not be, as he was able to come to my home for most of our appointments and spend as much time as I needed. This is so important for suerers of mental health issues because there are times when fragile mental health prevents people from leaving their homes for weeks on end! My particular nurse is very skilled at working with patients who often have serious trust issues. Thanks to the integrated approach of working together with all my health care team, the Fellowship has been critical in my recovery. I am slowly healing, and our sessions have been reduced to one visit per month, so I am denitely making progress. I could not recommend your program more highly. There is a great need in our community for well trained, sensitive MH nurses who, like District nurses, are willing to reach out to their patients in whatever way fulls their individual needs. Yet the scope of care that these wonderful nurses provide is so much broader than District Nurses. At a time when it feels like the entire planet is about to fall apart, mental health management that reaches out to the community has never been more important. Thank you for being there for me - your care has made all the dierence. If you are interested in engaging with our mental health nurses please speak to your GP about a referral to the program.

A peer mentor model is... utilised, with peer support workers assisting consumers to engage in the program.
