12.01.2022 Most parents would do anything to protect their children. Most parents wouldnt introduce their child to an abuser, nor would they allow abusers access to their... children. Most parents dont know that statistically only 11% of sexually abused children were abused by a stranger.. Let that sink in. 89% off sexually abused children knew their abuser. 12% of females and 4.5% of males report having been sexually abused before the age of 15 with the majority being between the ages of 3 and 8! I can imagine most of you are reading this thinking, this wouldnt happen to my kids. No one in our family or friendship circle would hurt my kids. And Im sure most of the parents of the abused kids thought the exact same thing. So what can we do to protect our kids? We can talk. We can use our voices as a weapon against these appalling facts. We can educate and empower our children to protect themselves and to remove the effectiveness of the techniques that groomers use. Our favourite book is called Only for me and its a a fun, rhyming book. It informs kids of their right to privacy and how to protect their own body, by discussing body parts, safe secrets, the power of saying no and what to do if something bad does happen. Im going to do a few more posts in relation to child protection.. why we dont have secrets in our house, calling a penis a penis and a vagina a vagina and how to teach consent to kids. But for now, buy this book, read it more then once. Read it over and over until your kids know it so well that they read along with you. It was written by a mum of 4. No one is making money off this book. Not me, and not the author. She donates 100% of her royalties to the agencies treating victims and preventing child abuse. It is an incredible resource you can use to fight back against these monsters. Our greatest weapon is to educate and empower our kids. Our greatest weapon is our voice. *this is not an ad* #onlyformeprotects #childprotection

11.01.2022 , ..Water in the Cubby sink. My Toddlers just love the Cubby house. Today I gave them a surprise, and added water to the play sink. They immedia...tely engaged in play, and began to wash and dry the dishes. Conflict arrived as obviously four toddlers wasnt going to fit on one sink, so we decided to have two washers, and two driers, setting a timer for one minute, then swapping roles. This worked a treat, but the children had to be reminded not to swap roles, upsetting their friends, and wait for the buzzer sound. Yes, some had tears, as one minute is a long time for a toddler ;) , but they needed to learn to wait for their turn, weather it upsets them or not, they soon got the gist of it, and the activity ran smoothly. Children develop social and emotional skills and understandings, needed to support positive relationships. Interacting with others also helps to teach children how to regulate their behaviour, and understand others feelings, as well as promoting a sense of independence, developing emotional competence and empathy are developed through play experiences as children become aware of their own and others emotions, motivations and desires, providing opportunities for children to learn about themselves and others. LO1 Children initiate, engage and join in play as they develop their autonomy, interdependence, resilience and sense of agency. LO2 Children are connecting to their world; coconstucting their own learning by observation. LO3 Children are strong in their social and emotional wellbeing, building confidence, empathy, kindness and respect towards others. LO4 Children develop dispositions for learning such as curiosity, cooperation, confidence, creativity, commitment, enthusiasm, persistence and reflexivity as they resource their own learning. LO5 Children engage in enjoyable interactions using verbal and non verbal language. NQS 3.2 The service environment is inclusive, promotes competence and supports exploration and play-based learning. NQS 5.1.1 Responsive and meaningful interactions build trusting relationships which engage and support each child to feel secure, confident and included. NQS 5.2 Each child is supported to build and maintain sensitive and responsive relationships. NQS 6.2 Collaborative partnerships enhance childrens inclusion, learning and wellbeing.

09.01.2022 Today on Early Childhood Educators Day, we celebrate the contribution early educators make to the lives of children, families and our country as a whole. The in...tegral role educators play has been brought into sharp focus during the pandemic. In an environment where social distancing cannot be observed, early educators have continued to work - providing a quality early education for children, and allowing parents with young families to keep their jobs. Early educators are essential workers in every sense of the word. Today and every day, we thank them for all they do. #EarlyChildhoodEducatorsDay #ozearlyed Early Childhood Educators Day Big Steps Campaign United Workers Union Early Childhood Australia

04.01.2022 Happy Fathers Day / A reflection on Gift Art For the past month or so, here and there, weve dabbled in meaningful art tailored to the dads and weve e...ngaged in discussion about our dads too. Weve shared what we think of our dads in a detailed interview Before I engage in my reflection, Dad, if you happen to read this I love you and I miss you so very much. With my holiday, your holiday and ongoing lockdowns (and 90km of road), weve spent a whole 8 hours together this year Nonetheless, I still love you and cant wait to hug you tightly again! You know, I think dads are pretty special. I know all children are not in the position to experience an engaged and loving dad in their life but in my service, all children have present, engaged and hands on dads. We went to a lot of effort because I think it is really important to acknowledge the often undervalued role that dads play in their childs life. Dads are valuable, theyre influential and theyre worth celebrating. This thinking became more transparent to me since Ive been physically separated from my own dad with ongoing lockdowns in Vic. I completed interviews with the children I think words are precious so I regularly interview the children These interviews capture the childs voice, their opinions, their humour, their thinking. It all becomes transparent to the listener/audience. These interviews enhance language skills, build confidence and fuel learning for peers. Its a win-win. (I appreciate that in depth interviews might be harder to achieve in long day care or a sessional kinder, but simplified or group versions are achievable.) After compiling the interviews it became clearly obvious that all the dads provide most of the silliness and laughs for the children in their homes. Farts is something that all of the children associated with their dads I appreciate how these dads somehow find a way to be both the childs dad and their funny little friend. These dads seem to show the children the lighter side of life which is truly wonderful and its definitely needed! I have been asked by a couple of educators to share how I get children to be so successful with drawing and writing, so Ive decided to do a reflection on it below. I am a really passionate educator and person in general. With passion comes strong opinion sometimes. I dont do much craft where there is a desired outcome. This stifles creativity and its boring in my educated opinion. I love art, heck I have an entire room in my service dedicated to the exploration and production of it. But art has to be authentic, it has to be the childs work and the process has to be enjoyed by the child This Fathers Day, there were different pieces created some children did similar things and some items were very unique. It all depended on the childs preference and the type of relationship they have with their dad. For example, one little boy adores his dad so much he is essentially his dads little shadow, so I supported him to create something that reflected and celebrated their bond through footprints. I did not create this art, I helped by creating a page with typed writing but the child painted their own foot and their dads boot for an impression, he painted hearts with nail polish, drew complimenting people figures and wrote his name. I could have easily done this myself but that is hardly meaningful learning and engagement for the child. It might be a great keepsake for Dad, but its more of a keepsake when it includes the childs touch. How do I manage to get children to succeed with drawing and writing? I dont know, exactly. Its a combination of a lot of little things. I am fairly artistic and perhaps this passion transpires to the children. The children are never forced or coerced to do art, they end up developing the intrinsic motivation to want to do it. Art exploration is available to the children all day, every day. I ensure I provide quality resources from quality pencils through to quality fine liners. You see, when children are given the opportunity to use quality resources it can enhance and truly help define their creations. This helps them to feel successful. We use real resources too - accidents did happen with this Fathers Day gift making - a glass frame broke during the wrapping process - we discussed it, we cleaned it up together. Tears flowed. Recovery and composure returned. Goofing around with wrapping paper happened as well - there is both fun and short term sadness in much of what we do! I also find that childrens drawings tell a story and I make myself available to hear it, to show interest in it and to be the childs engaged and attentive audience. This all helps. I use playful language that becomes relevant too. Perhaps a child is learning to write the lower case e. Ill teach it through a visual demonstration, either written or using my magic finger that outlines the letter in the air, but its the language I use that will often capture and retain the childs attention For the letter e we go across, up and over like a rainbow and back down and around a little. This is just a playful example of how I describe to write the lower case e. For years now, this attitude, this approach, along with the space, availability and freedom to create has seen tremendous success unfold with childrens drawing, creating and writing pursuits Sometimes, I think this area of development, is one of my points of difference as an educator. Just remember, we ALL have a point of difference, we just have to identify it, build on it and celebrate it! Sincerely, Mel
