25.01.2022 Always Was. Always will Be. This week we celebrated 2020 National NAIDOC Week, which focused on the 65,000+ years that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have lived and cultivated the lands now known as Australia. Based at Menzies School of Health Research in Darwin, RHDAustralia is fortunate enough to reside on the lands of the Larrakia Country. ... The Larrakia people are the Aboriginal Traditional Owners of the all land and waters of the greater Darwin area and runs from Cox peninsula in the west to Gunn Point in the north, Adelaide River in the east and down to the Manton Dam area southwards. The Larrakia had a vibrant traditional society based on close relationship with the sea and trade with neighbouring groups such as the Tiwi, Wagait and Wulna. These groups shared ceremonies, songlines and intermarried. You can learn more about the Larrakia people and their land here http://larrakia.com/about/the-larrakia-people/ #NAIDOC2020 #Larrakia
25.01.2022 As a key partner in END RHD, we are pleased to share with you the RHD Endgame strategy, which was launched on Zoom today by Professor Jonathan Carapetis, Hon Minister Greg Hunt and Pat Turner, CEO of NACCHO. The RHD Endgame Strategy is a blueprint to eliminate rheumatic heart disease in Australia by 2031. The strategy has been five years in the making and pairs research by leading infectious diseases specialists with the knowledge and experience of Aboriginal and Torres Stra...it Islander leaders across the country. To set the foundations needed to make ending RHD achievable within the next decade, the Strategy outlines five key priorities for immediate attention. These are: Resource an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led National Implementation Unit to coordinate rheumatic heart disease elimination efforts across Australia; Fund communities to develop their own culturally appropriate programs to eliminate RHD; Tackle the root causes of RHD by guaranteeing communities have access to healthy housing and built environments; Establish a comprehensive skin and throat program for high risk communities; and Improve the health and wellbeing of those living with ARF and RHD. More information can be found at www.telethonkids.org.au/rhd-endgame
25.01.2022 Meet the RHDAustralia Team 2020 - RHDAustralia was established as Australia’s national ARF/RHD coordination unit in 2009. Over the last 10 years our role has changed, and while we are still committed to supporting national clinical best practice and workforce capacity, we have an emerging focus on supporting the needs of the community. There have been several changes in the RHDAustralia team over the last few months, and we would like to take this opportunity to highlight who we are and what we've been focusing on in 2020. https://www.rhdaustralia.org.au//meet-rhdaustralia-team-20
23.01.2022 There are several opportunities for intervention - prevention along the ARF-RHD disease pathway; including primordial prevention of group A streptococcal (Strep A) infections, primary prevention of ARF, secondary prevention of ARF, and tertiary prevention of complications associated with RHD. In this article, we take a closer look at secondary prevention, and specifically secondary prophylaxis for ARF, with a focus on delivery of benzathine benzylpenicillin G injections. https://www.rhdaustralia.org.au//clinical-update-secondary
22.01.2022 Aged just seven, Tenaya underwent emergency life-saving surgery to repair her heart valve as a result of developing rheumatic heart disease (RHD), the leading cause of cardiovascular inequality for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in Australia. Now, through the power of collaboration between researchers, the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Sector, clinicians and government, we have the RHD Endgame Strategy: The blueprint to eliminate rheumatic heart disease in Australia by 2031. 22.01.2022 "I’m an infectious diseases doctor, meaning I look after people who have sepsis, pneumonia etc. Which is why I developed an interest in rheumatic fever. "I am the director of the Global and Tropical Health division at Menzies School of Health Research, as well as the co-director of RHDAustralia. "I am also a researcher focusing on rheumatic fever, tuberculosis and improving how doctors communicate with Aboriginal patients."... "I wanted to be a doctor since I was 13 and heard a presentation about overseas medical aid work. Later I realised you don’t have to go overseas to work with disadvantaged populations who suffer preventable infections. "I like that the longer you work in the Territory, the more you learn about Aboriginal culture and about how we could make health systems work better for the people here. "That’s fundamentally what RHDAustralia is about." Professor Anna Ralph, Co-director at RHDAustralia https://www.rhdaustralia.org.au/our-people
20.01.2022 Specialist teams fly into regional NSW Australia to tackle rheumatic heart disease.
19.01.2022 A big shout out to Danila Dilba's Maida Stewart who recently completed a Churchill Fellowship investigating how Healthy Homes initiatives can help to prevent Ac...ute Rheumatic Heart Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease. Maida, who travelled to New Zealand for the fellowship (before COVID-19), found community-led solutions that were low cost, high impact and fit for purpose were often the most effective in reducing the risk of ARF. Maida said the Northern Territory could also learn from this approach. I learnt that there are effective solutions that can be implemented right now to make our homes healthier, she said. This problem is not completely beyond our control and there is no reason that we can’t look to similar solutions to help prevent ARF and RHD in our communities in the Northern Territory and across Australia. 16.01.2022 Terrence Guyula is an Aboriginal Health Practitioner who has worked in the remote Top End of the Northern Territory for over 32 years. In 2016, we highlighted Terrence’s experience with secondary prophylaxis delivery. We recently caught up with him again to talk about his unique style of breaking down complex health information for Aboriginal people with ARF and RHD, and translating the needs of the Aboriginal community for the wider health workforce.
15.01.2022 END RHD is the peak body leading work to eliminate RHD in Australia. Together, we bring together the wisdom of the Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Sector, researchers, public health advocates and clinicians. With the release of the Endgame we now have the blueprint to make ending rheumatic heart disease a reality. Implementing the Endgame has the potential to save over 600 lives and prevent the number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people developing the d...isease from more than doubling with another 8,000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people projected to develop the disease by 2031. Implementing the Endgame will also ensure those who are already living with RHD are afforded the best quality of life. And with RHD being the leading cause of cardiovascular inequality, we know that tackling RHD is a tangible way to close the gap. https://www.rhdaustralia.org.au//rhd-endgame-strategy-elim
15.01.2022 An Australian first clinic is being trialled in Cairns helping young Rheumatic Heart Disease patients. Doctors hope the Transition Care Clinic's model will be rolled out across Queensland, bridging the gap between paediatric and adult care.
15.01.2022 RHDAustralia is very fortunate to be able to offer traineeship positions through Menzies School of Health Research. Through this scheme, we help to build workforce capacity among young Indigenous people, who provide hands-on support to our projects while gaining skills to enhance their future training and career development. This year, we’re lucky enough to have Naja Dyrting, a Garrawa (Borroloola, NT) and Djugun-Yawuru (Broome, WA) woman born and raised in Darwin. Naja is a descendant of the Stolen Generations, and has family connections to the Tiwi people.
15.01.2022 Children aged 5-14 are the most vulnerable group when it comes to getting acute rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease. It also turns out one in four children is exposed to domestic violence as well. At home, at school, at work, in social settings and across our community, we can address men’s violence against women and children, and put a stop to it. Take the opportunity today to come together online or over the phone to raise awareness & commit to action to prevent vi...olence against women. #WhiteRibbonDay https://www.whiteribbon.org.au/
14.01.2022 There are several opportunities for intervention - prevention along the ARF-RHD disease pathway including primordial prevention of group A streptococcal (Strep A) infections, primary prevention of ARF, secondary prevention of ARF, and tertiary prevention of complications associated with RHD. In this article, we take a closer look at primary prevention. Primary prevention of ARF aims to interrupt the link between the Strep A infection and the abnormal immune response to the in...fection that causes ARF. This is achieved by identifying and treating Strep A infections early. #primaryprevention #rhdeducation #sorethroats #skinsores
13.01.2022 "Tenaya was just seven years old when she underwent emergency life-saving surgery to repair her heart valve a result of developing rheumatic heart disease (RHD). To prevent her condition from worsening, she must now have a penicillin injection every 28 days until at least the age of 21, and will likely require further surgery. Tenaya is one of more than 5000 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living with RHD or its precursor, acute rheumatic fever (ARF).... But an RHD Endgame Strategy, produced by the End Rheumatic Heart Disease Centre of Research Excellence (END RHD CRE), has brought hope for the elimination of the disease in Australia by 2031."
13.01.2022 Housing for Health There is a well-established link between living conditions and the group A Streptococcal (Strep A) infections that lead to episodes of ARF. Primordial prevention measures related to ARF are those aiming to prevent Strep A infections. These measures include improving housing and environmental conditions, including addressing household crowding, reducing bed sharing and towel sharing, and providing adequate washing facilities.

11.01.2022 After watching these New Zealand kids do their own news story on rheumatic fever you'll wonder why we even have adults doing news reports.
09.01.2022 We've updated our website and given it a refresh while also bringing the content into alignment with the 2020 ARF/RHD Guideline. Additionally, we've made changes to the resource library to improve usability and searchability. And because of the growing amount of content over the years there was a need to better organise our content and clean up the menu system. ... We hope you find the website easier to navigate and the information more current. But, there's always room for improvement so if you have any feedback, we're all ears! www.rhdaustralia.org.au
