This is Kat Colmer’s third YA novel and you quickly know as a reader that you are in great hands- a page turning premise, tightly written, witty dialogue and lots of heart. Loved this one. ‘When 18 year-old Maya leaves Chicago for a six week Australian home stay, she assumes she's heading to beautiful Barangaroo with its famous Sydney Harbour views-NOT Barangaroo Creek, a stinking hot, fly-ridden, wi-fi dead zone hours from a decent body of water. Frances is a writer to watch. This is also a page turner that places a teen in so many dilemmas- and we are immersed in the world of music and bands. I can see why @franceschapmanwriter won the #ampersandprize for this manuscript- a prize for debut authors that has launched the careers of talents such as Erin Gough. 10.01.2022 When writing anything, take some time to read it aloud during your editing phase, it'll help wonders! And if you don't have the time to read it all out loud, you can tell your computer to do it so you can listen in for those places that don't work, but slip past your eyes!
