25.01.2022 On this day, 2nd February 1912: Black Friday. At the height of the 1912 Brisbane General Strike a crowd of 15,000 defied the police and demonstrated in Market Square. The trade unionist and suffragist Emma Miller led a group of women to march on Parliament House. The name Black Friday was inspired by the actions of the police who attacked the crowds under the command of Commissioner William Geoffrey Cahill.

25.01.2022 What is it like to live through a global pandemic? Unfortunately, this is something we all have some experience of lately! But each person's own experience is different. Stories from the Heart: Penning the Pandemic is a collection of short stories and poems from people across Queensland. It provides a unique record of the impacts, both direct and indirect, positive and negative, that COVID-19 has had on everyday lives. Shared with kind permission from Johanna Skinner and Jane... Connolly, you can read Stories from the Heart on our website: https://queenslandhistory.org/stories-from-the-heart-3/ See more

17.01.2022 This week marks 160 years since Burke and Wills died. Employed by the Royal Society of Victoria to reach the Gulf of Carpentaria before South Australia, half the party succeeded in their mission but perished on the return journey. Having left some of their men and supplies at Cooper Creek in far west Queensland, they returned to find the men had departed - with all the clothes and most of the food - earlier that day. Burke and Wills were too weak to go much further and sadly died, with only their companion King surviving. Although the exact date is uncertain, it is generally accepted that they died on or around the 28 June. For more information on the fateful expedition, visit our website: https://buff.ly/3gC7706
