Awesome for all of us that need to find that rhythmic balance in our lives, challenge the mind and ears and get those alpha state endorphins rushing through our systems. It's not the long term model but it's a wonderful temporary solution to the times we face ourselves with. Tonight we kick off a new 6 week cycle of drumming classes. New rhythms & new challenges but the same old exhilarating drumming buzz and connection that comes from making tribal music together. Lets keep the hands warm until we next meet face to face. 11.01.2022 This clip reminds us of our last Rhythm Power tour visit to Ouagadougou. Music of the the Mossi peopleof Burkina Faso. Centrally located around the capital Ouagadougou the Mossi account for 40% of the population. Here the men dance Warba - a long time ago, the warba dance was reserved for a ritual of the same name which occurred only for enthronements and funerals. The bendre, a calabash drum covered with a sheep skin and struck with the hands, is traditionally used to play the lead. this drum has associations with the court of the naba, or mossi chief. and for announcing important messages. also traditionally accompanying the dance are lunga (talking drum similar to a tama, only bigger), dunun, kiema (iron bell) and wiga (flute).

07.01.2022 As you know Burkina is a tough place to live, but for the local Griot it has become almost impossible. Burkina AZZA " Leader Adama Kouéta from Zoura " have seen all their gigs dry up since the start of March ... gigs are the only source of income for them and their families. It's tough times to say the least and any support you can offer will go directly to them via this crowd funding initiative which i can vouch for. Many thanks, Simon and the Burkina Azza musicians

06.01.2022 Hi Drummers and Dancers. Its been a while since Ive been in touch and so much has changed so quickly. I have held off making a decision as long as possible but after much thought, Ive decided to postpone the upcoming Rhythm Power Tour. There are several factors that weighed heavily on this decision and they include: - The uncertainty of Covid in Ghana and the potential of a second wave and what that would mean for us as a tour group. I always ensure that the tour group is ...safe and feels comfortable, which will be difficult to do if there's issues with Covid. There is a risk that it would impact on the tour in a way that takes away from the freedom I want us all to enjoy. - Critical mass. We really need at least 15 participants for the tour to go ahead. We are currently at 10 and its likely some of the 10 will not feel comfortable going now. Whether we are going to pick up extra students in these uncertain times is impossible to say. My gut feel tells me its an uphill battle as I havent had any inquiries since early March when Covid started and I dont expect any soon. - International travel. Currently its impossible to fly into Ghana as their borders are not open and Visa offices are closed. When this will change is the great unknown. - Flight prices. My research tells me that prices may well spike to Africa once they resume, making it very expensive / price prohibitive to fly into Ghana. Sorry that its not going to happen this year, but my intention is to run Rhythm Power in 21/22 I will keep you all posted on future tour dates and plans as they come to life. 06.01.2022 We are thinking of you - our friends in Burkina

05.01.2022 In Anlo-Ewe cultural understanding, the technique of cross rhythm is a highly developed systematic interplay of varying rhythmic motions simulating the dynamics... of contrasting moments or emotional stress phenomena likely to occur in actual human existence. The training scheme of members of the African Music and Dance Ensemble takes this ancestral philosophy seriously. Here is recording of a typical rehearsal of Gahu. Gahu is a popular secular dance-drumming among the Anlo-Ewe people of southeastern Ghana. It originated among the Gun-Gbe people of Ketornu in Benin, West Africa. It was later introduced in southwestern Nigeria where Anlo-Ewe migrant fishermen adapted it from their Nigerian hosts. Whether in Benin, Nigeria or Ghana, Gahu is a popular communal entertainment performed whenever the community finds the excuse to celebrate life.
