15.01.2022 After 4 days and 3 hours of hard sailing, Whistler crossed the finish line in this years Sydney to Hobart to finish 10th overall on handicap, 2nd place in Division 4, and first Tasmanian boat on corrected time. Water, water everywhere After an uneventful start in pleasant conditions, the first of 2 storm fronts crossed the fleet testing boats, sails, stomachs and wet weather gear. With waves and heavy rain coming in over the deck of the boat, despite our best efforts plen...ty still made its way into the cabin of the boat, and after 12 hours of this everything was wet the beds, sleeping bags, clothes, electronics, radios everything. Navigation system stood up to the test The importance of simple, reliable navigation systems is highlighted in these conditions. Combine sleep deprevation (rotating roster of 2 hours sleep, 4 hours sailing for 4 days) with wet, rough conditions will test any system. Tracking the favourable currents (East Coast Current) is key to success in this race, with our speed being boosted by %50 once in the current. Fortunately our Toughbook CF19 stood up to the test and continued to to chart our progress and keep us on track. About Whistler Whistler, a Dovell 36 was the fourth smallest boat in the Sydney to Hobart. Despite its modest size it has an impressive record, winning the 2010 Three Island Series and Combined Clubs Offshore Series, 2011 Combined Clubs Long Race Series in AMS and IRC. RIA Mobile GIS sponsors the boat, providing navigation systems and integration services. Tim Price, RIAs Managing Director, crews on the boat in the offshore races including the Sydney to Hobart.
