24.01.2022 AMRS DRIVER OF THE YEAR AWARDS #2 Ric Shaw (2018 Mazda RX8 Cup Champion) He started the season as the driving force behind the new Mazda RX8 Cup Series, and R...ic Shaw ended the year with a well-deserved boost to his already sky-high reputation for maximising the performance of a race car on and off the track. While no members of the judging panel placed Shaw in the number one position on their list, all but one placed him among their top five. Several judges noted that with his vast racing experience and previous success, Shaw was expected to win the championship before the start of the season. But those same judges also commented that Shaw definitely deserved a spot somewhere near the top of the list, because of his passion and dedication to the category behind the scenes. Indeed, Shaw has been the driving force behind the creation of a category which - unlike a lot of startup categories - had a very solid competitor base from the very start. Entries steadily increased over the course of the season and reached the high teens by the end of the year; with more cars under construction, fields in the 20s are on the cards for 2019. Much of the credit for the RX8 Cup’s meteoric rise to prominence can be attributed directly to Shaw’s tireless and selfless off-track efforts. And while he may have been expected to win the championship, Shaw delivered on those expectations in fine style. The final scorecard shows that he won all five rounds overall, but closer analysis reveals that he had to work very hard for each one of those victories. Drivers like Will Harris, Stephen McLaine and Aaron Prosser had the speed to beat Shaw in qualifying or in individual races, and it’s a mark of Shaw’s experience and pure talent that he was always able to find a way to stand on the top step of the podium by the end of each weekend. Whether he’s judged by his on-track ability or his off-track contributions to the sport, there’s no doubt Ric Shaw is a worthy runner-up for AMRS 2018 Driver of the Year.
