20.01.2022 To all those dedicated parents and care givers of children playing sport in freezing conditions. Do you know how to prevent freezing your toes off? Well at least not develop chilblains? Chilblains (or medically known as erythema perino ) are a condition that occurs where there is an abnormal blood flow reaction to cold. Some people are a little more likely to be prone to this condition than others but basically when you are exposed to cold and humidity together it can get a ...little nasty in the foot department. Damage to the small blood vessels (called capillaries) in the skin cause redness itching, inflammation, and sometimes blisters. Its not much fun and once you have them its a good week or so before they start to feel better. Its going to be a frosty -1 degrees here in sunny Echuca/ Moama for the next few nights so here is some loving advice from me to you on how to survive the weekend sporting adventures.. 1. Rise early enough to obtain a great coffee. This will help you prevent chilblains on your fingers, and help you lace up your 2. Well fitted shoes. Do not be too tempted to look too cool ie short boots with tiny socks or slip on ballet flats. A sneaker or thick soled boot is a great option. Forget the heels save them for later in the evening. 3.Wear thick wool blend well fitted socks. Your allow to borrow your partners if you can not find your own. Just wash them before you give them back. 4. Avoid warming your feet up too quickly after you have been cold. Tissue requires increased blood flow when it heats up. Its a bit like a car needing more fuel the faster it goes. If the extra blood flow does not reach your feet quick enough, the tissue becomes oxygen starved. This can cause a chilblain. So avoid using hot water and heaters to warm up. Just warm up slowly. Basically avoid the extremes in temps. 5. Exercise at least 4 times a week ( in all your spare time) to improve your circulation... or maybe just replace one of them with another coffee. Good luck! See more

17.01.2022 HEELS HASSLING YOU? Summers a great time to relax, forget about the uniform and just become a barefoot warrior. Maybe wearing thongs with every outfit becomes your standard footwear, but it can be a bit tough on your feet. Skin on your feet usually turns over every 3 weeks or so but in summer it might be more like every 10-14 days. This is especially so if your wearing thongs, sling back shoes or maybe just chasing children around. Cracks in heels can get very sore and rea...lly quickly and in some cases can allow infection into your feet. (That is not good if chasing children!) A great conservative way to help yourself is to use a pumice/foot rasp 1-2 times a week . If you do not have sensation in your feet do not over use the pumice. Using a cream and wearing covered in shoes is also a great help however if its getting on top of you and you need some professional help, phone and make an appointment. I can painlessly remove all of the dry skin in a 30 minute consultation with sterile instruments and have your feet looking spiffy again. Then you can get back to enjoying your holidays or chasing the kiddies around! See more

01.01.2022 Have you or some one you know had a sore toenail now your into your winter boots? Or maybe you have started your winter sports and all of a sudden you have a problem with your nail and not sure what to do? Ingrown toenails occur when a nail edge pierces or presses into the skin. The symptoms include - the skin can become tender -red... -swollen -painful - infected ( requiring antibiotics ) An ingrown nail can be cause by incorrect fitting footwear or nail cutting, trauma, abnormally shaped toenail Most cases can be resolved with conservative care. In some severe cases, antibiotics and or nail surgery may be required but a majority settle with non painful conservative care. If you think you have an ingrown nail here are a few conservative things you can try at home to hopefully get it to settle down before it get any worse - Warm salt bath daily. Soak toe for a few minutes - cover with a fresh antiseptic dressing daily. - keep all shoe pressure off the toe - check your shoe fitting. Your shoe should have a finger width spare at the longest toe ideally. Avoid narrow/shallow toe boxed shoes. If all else fails after a few days and or you have diabetes or poor blood flow its probably best to have it seen to by a podiatrist. If you think there is an infection ie its untouchable and very red hot swollen it may require antibiotics from your Doctor before the podiatrist can fix you up. Good luck!
