16.01.2022 State opens up northern coal fields THE Queensland Government has thrown open the Bowen Basin coal fields for further exploration with the release of 1300sq km of land. The release will be opened through a non-cash tendering system in which bidders only have to supply a works program. The release came as the Government claimed exploration was at near record levels this year, with $1.3 billion being spent, including $1.1 billion in coal and petroleum exploration. State Natura...l Resources and Mines Minister Andrew Cripps said seven areas of land would be made available for exploration at the northern end of the Bowen Basin. Going through the non-cash system is expected to allow the junior explorers to bid. "The Newman Government understands that a vibrant exploration sector is critical to uncovering the mineral deposits and mines of future, and non-cash tender processes offer the opportunity for junior explorers to make their mark," Mr Cripps said. "This new framework for coal exploration permits allows for the assessment and comparison of potential tenderers, ensuring land is allocated to those most able and committed to effectively explore for potential resources.

03.01.2022 Nod for mine projects State puts foot on the gas as port, island schemes approved The Federal Government has approved four major coal and gas projects in Queensland in a move that is seen as a major step forward for the development of the state's mega mines. After markets closed yesterday, the Federal Government gave the green light to the capital dredging program at Abbot Point, the Adani TO project at Abbot Point, the $20 billion Arrow Liquefied Natural Gas Facility on Cu...rtis Island and the Arrow Gas Transmission Pipeline to Curtis Island. The Abbott Point dredging, which will allow development of three coal terminals, will dump 3 million cubic metres of spoil in the World Heritage Area of the Great Barrier Reef. Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney said the approval had been Australia's longest and most comprehensive. "Expanding the Port of Abbot Point is crucial to opening up the rich coal resources of the Galilee Basin," he said. The approvals could herald massive development in central and northern Queensland, with the ports decision seen as a major step for the development of the mega mines in the Galilee Basin, west of Emerald. Environment Minister Greg Hunt has imposed 95 environmental conditions for Abbott Point and 53 for Arrow's Curtis Island LNG. "Some of the strictest conditions in Australian history have been placed on these projects to ensure that any impacts are avoided, mitigated or offset," Mr Hunt said. Mr Hunt said the conditions meant that there would be a long term net reduction of fine sediments entering the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park from land-based sources.
