25.01.2022 MODERN CAR KEYS Why are they so expensive? Car theft is a major and expensive issue for all concerned. Thieves could steal vehicles in minutes, so something had to be done to combat this, enter the electronic engine immobilizer.... About 1995 the vehicle immobilizer system was introduced to the Australian market and the vehicle makers started to fit these devices to new vehicles. From about the year 2000 the vast majority of vehicles sold in Australia have an electronic immobilizer of some sort fitted. Your key will probably have a transponder chip embedded in the head. This Transponder chip communicates with the immobilizer system which in turn lets your key the vehicle start and operate. Typical Costs:- The cost to supply, cut and programme a replacement key or remote for a vehicle, during normal business hours, may cost $150.00 to several hundred dollars even if you have an existing working key or remote. The lower cost keys are generally cloned keys (where the electronic information is copied to a new chip). Not all keys can be cloned and some require special processes, equipment and software to be programmed to the vehicle. All Keys Lost:- This is a lot more complex and a lot more expensive. The vehicle may need to be unlocked, security devices reset and key codes obtained using specialist diagnostic equipment and techniques. Some vehicles on the Australian market will need the OBC (on board computer) to be removed and re-programmed which requires more specialised equipment and techniques. To provide working key(s), when there is no working key available, can cost from a few hundred dollars to well over $2000.00. Plus time the vehicle is off the road. We strongly recommend that any one that has a transponder / electronic key have a working spare! See more
