24.01.2022 Good morning potters! As an update to RTC's web and storefront, we will soon be selling a range of handmade items! Beginning with cups, tumblers and bowls. Be on the lookout for our stories on the various throwing, trimming and glazing processes, as we take these beautiful pieces from inception to creation. #pottery #potterystudio #ceramics @ Richard Tomaino Ceramics

23.01.2022 I intentionally break things sometimes. Specifically so I can repair them and make them prettier. These tumbler vases now serve as utensil holder's, where I've smoothed the broken side. The waterfall effect on the lip was also a nice final detail. #pottery #potterystudio #ceramics #ceramicdesign @ Richard Tomaino Ceramics

23.01.2022 Large square mug. Faceted on the wheel and detail sculpted when dry. This is a very achievable form for any beginner, despite its complexity. It just takes timing and following the correct steps. Like baking a cake @ Richard Tomaino Ceramics

20.01.2022 Good morning potters. As promised, here is a short promo for RTC's upcoming online workshop focussed on turning broken greenware pieces into new assemblies. Life's experiences leave us all with broken edges and this workshop aims to show the process of smoothing and shaping those remains. The philosophy of both the RTC Studio and this workshop is to not give up on things; celebrate those features you would otherwise hide and make them part of a bold new identity.... Stay tuned for more content and descriptions leading up to our event. 19.01.2022 A big thank you for all your support in filling up our studio classes! It's been fantastic meeting all the new faces and I appreciate everyone's interest in the beautiful craft! For all those that missed out on our latest class release, rest assured they'll be plenty more classes available soon Here's an interesting bowl that's come out of the kiln. I've been experimenting recently with matt over glossy glazes. This particular pairing is a wet on wet combination of Chun blue over Ming green, producing a sea foam effect as the Blue breaks and disperses, like waves over a beach... I like it! #pottery #workshop #ceramics #glaze #craft #chun #ming #bowl #kiln

15.01.2022 Season's greetings potters In celebrating making it through 2020 I'll be adding these beauties to the product line up for those last minute gift purchases! Hand thrown with Lumina porcelain with a delicate powder blue Chun glaze, these macchiato cup & bowl sets were designed and produced in house here at RTC ... There isn't much time for me to produce wares between classesthese days, but our time off during Iso gave me a chance to focus on creating pieces of my own. These humble pieces represent the collective efforts of many students, locals, family, friends who showed us love through iso. So head into our studio from next Monday and grab a few of these sets for that special Christmas breakkie! Cup and Bowl $45 a set #handmade #ceramics #pottery #porcelaine #stoneware #cup #bowl #chun #glaze #gift #set

15.01.2022 Recently stumbled across this great Ming green combination on our macchiato cup and saucers. It's depth and translucency really bring out the form. Thanks the the customer who custom ordered this combination, I think I'll be glazing the remaining sets in just the same colour Two sets remaining for any still interested

14.01.2022 Who wouldn't mind a few of these babies for Chrissy?? These handmade Shino glazed bowls will be part of RTC's upcoming Christmas sale. The delicate matte finish and light speckle make these a great holiday gift for the season of giving. Ready for sale 1st week of December Available in small, medium and large / sets of a trio. #pottery #handmade #bowls #ceramics #set #dinnerware #clay

14.01.2022 Here's to neutral tones Another fine example of a beginner's term folio work glazed this time in satin black. As our Beginners Term aims to develope the foundation skills of the ceramic process, domestic wares such as cups, condiment bowls and dishes become great shapes to focus on. And though we offer a great selection of glazes to fire your final work, this selection of muted tones really highlight the student's form and attention to detail. Nice work guys!... @robinching_ @wychng_ @rcxmedia #students #term #class #folio #pottery #potterystudio #clay #craft #handmade #ceramics #glaze #workshop #satin #mutedtones #throwing #stoneware #set

14.01.2022 One of many many noodle bowls currently being produced. I started out hating the process of making these, now I've come to really enjoy them!

13.01.2022 I've been asked time and time again my method for surviving these times. I work. I work hard.. whether it's the repetitious monotony of breaking down bricks, kneading clay, throwing a satisfying shape or screwing it up and having to start all over again; I work. It's my answer to everything. I funnel everything I'm feeling into this stuff because it's the only thing I know how to do. So when I can, my studio will open again.. And I will keep teaching.. And I will keep making. Rain, hail or shine.

13.01.2022 Be sure to tune into tomorrow's free live instagram broadcast for my Broken is Beautiful workshop. I'll be kicking off at 10am and running through some of the basics of preparing clay, throwing nesting bowls, breaking them with a specific design in mind and then shaping the edges I'll also be recording the workshop for anyone keen of viewing later! ... Till then! See more

10.01.2022 We make, we learn, we teach, repeat. As much as another lock down would like to bring us down, our studio will always persevere with passion and resilience. Just like this little Ming set Even the broken wall of the coffee cup has been shaped and carved into a elegant contour. Proving that each of us is capable of shaping and carving difficult circumstances into something beautiful... Hang in there Melbourne! Wishing everyone a happy Valentines and looking forward to welcoming everyone back to the studio. @rcxmedia @robinching_ & @wychng_ #pottery #potterystudio #ceramics #clay #classes #studio #bespoke

09.01.2022 Although I usually prefer cleaner and more subtle tones in my glazes, occasionally I will experiment with both colour and texture. Here are two glaze experiments blended using a style called Hakeme (applied with astiff bristled brush). Test tiles are an important method of distinguishing between glaze effects, especially for commission work. This is something we cover in our week 5 and 6 Term classes as well! #pottery #potterystudio #clay #ceramics #glaze

08.01.2022 In preperation for @craftvictoria and their Contemporary Craft Festival held this coming October, RTC will be hosting an online event showcasing the construction and destruction of a series of ceramic pieces. Aptly named "Broken is Beautiful" this will be a series of short clips designed to showcase how broken pieces can be fashioned into something striking. These clips will be released weekly with hopes of many of you tuning in next week

04.01.2022 Working on a little project with a local business for custom incense holders. During the design process, the clients asked if the vessel could hold both stick and coil incense, so we developed a small removable peg to sit inside. Such a fun iso project and the scent of the samples are beautiful #ceramics #pottery #craft #incense #custom #handmade #local #ashburton
