24.01.2022 TWEED COUNCIL WELCOMES CLOSURE OF FAR NORTH COAST RAIL BRANCH LINE - by Halden Boyd TWEED Shire Council has welcomed the passing of legislation through the NSW ...Parliament to formally close the railway line from Murwillumbah to Crabbes Creek, making way for the construction of the Tweed's stage of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail. The State Member for Tweed Geoff Provest announced that a Bill to close the railway line passed the New South Wales Upper House, having passed the Lower House on the 23rd September 2020. "Council welcomes the passage of this legislation and thanks Mr Provest and all our current and past members who have steadfastly advocated to secure the way forward for this new tourism enterprise for the Northern Rivers region," Council General Manager Troy Green said. "This news marks a key milestone achievement for Council's rail trail project and provides the much-needed initiative the certainty our community has been waiting for and on which we can have a clear conversation. "It also enables Council to re-engage with our shortlisted design and construction prospective tenderers so that we can work towards a final rail trail design, and clarify during the process our ability to incorporate on and/or off-formation (trail beside the rail) aspects where appropriate that best serve the broader needs and aspirations of our community. "This legislation importantly retains the corridor in public ownership and paves the way for Council's shortlisted tenderers to bring their rail trail concept designs forward in the next phase of Council's contract procurement. "We look forward to having that next level of objective engineering assessment to address the many queries and claims raised about the rail trail design and to assist with alleviating neighbouring landowner concerns. Construction of the 24-kilometre section of the rail trail from Murwillumbah to Crabbes Creek has been jointly funded by the NSW and Australian governments. The Council has been engaged as the project manager to oversee design and construction of the section. Council says it hopes to be in a position to award a Design and Construct contract early next year, with construction to begin around March and the Murwillumbah to Crabbes Creek section of the rail trail to be operational by late 2022. This first stage of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail has received $6.5 million in funding from the Australian Government under its Regional Jobs and Infrastructure Packages Fund, with the NSW Government providing $7.8 million under its Regional Tourism Infrastructure Fund. An additional $600,000 has been secured from the NSW Government to cover the costs of operating and maintaining the section of rail trail for the first three years. The Bentley to Casino section of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail also was formally closed by the NSW Parliament with the Upper House decision.. This section forms the western end of the proposed 134-kilometre Murwillumbah to Casino Northern Rivers Rail Trail. It too has received grant funding to design and construct and Richmond Valley Council has been engaged as the project manager to deliver that section of the rail trail. 20.01.2022 TRAIL MAINTENANCE UPDATE. If you've been passed Captain Rous Park in the last week, you may have noticed there's been some maintenance work being carry out. Maintenance has now been completed. ... Riders need to keep in mind that being so dry, the trail is going to take a little time to settle. We ask that you keep this in mind, stay low on berms and ride to conditions. This will help to avoid unnecessary damage and the need for more repairs. Please take it easy until the surface has time to compact. Happy riding. And big thanks to the Guys at On Track Trails.

19.01.2022 How good would it be to have direct access to the tracks from town?

18.01.2022 Congratulations to everyone riding today. Some good results again. Congratulations John..

18.01.2022 RRR is currently seeking feedback from Captain Rous Park users to better understand current community needs. Please take a moment to complete this short survey. The survey closes Saturday 24 October 2020. https://docs.google.com//1FAIpQLSeFMmfwUEOjdpO_L/viewform

14.01.2022 Another podium finish. Congratulations to John Zmegac: 3rd place at Kempsey today. ( sorry there's no action photos, I was busy out riding the xc trails). Thanks to Macleay Valley Mtb-ers, for hosting the event and White Lightning for running to timing. The tracks were great. (Still waiting to hear how Jordan went)

14.01.2022 Tracks are looking great. Don't forget, please, stay low in the berms and ride to conditions, give the surface time to compact, to avoid damage to the new work and the need for further, unnecessary maintenance. Thanks to On Track Trails.

14.01.2022 If you want to get more skilful, more confident and more comfortable on the bike then there really is no replacement for bike time. You can build your fitness ...off the bike. You can watch skills videos and learn about riding off the bike. But when it comes to getting better and putting it all into practice? You have to ride! Get out there as often as you can : Gaz John

13.01.2022 Had road trip over the weekend to Inverell. Was good to find they have Mtb tracks close to town. Approximately 7km from town. We rode there from town, we found single track that allowed us to ride there and stay off the highway for most of the way out there. We also got to ride some of the Mtb tracks at Copeton Dam. The tracks were great, the only problem was not enough time to spend riding them.

13.01.2022 What a big weekend for Richmond River Riders. Two great events held this weekend. Saturday we headed down to Bom Bom State Forest for an xc event held by Bom Bom Racing, ( Grafton Cycling Club). All of us having entered into the two hour race. We did really well. Greg Dwyer took first in Masters, with Paddy taking second. Aaron Dehoon took first in the E-bike class, with myself coming in first in the Open Womens class. Today, Kyogle Mtb Club held their first event. Toda...y's event being an enduro. John Zmegac came third in Masters and Jordan Zmegac took first in Elite. Two very different tracks/ events, but both days were great to be at. Both had a very welcoming atmosphere. Well done and thank you to Bom Bom Racing and Kyogle Mtb Club for hosting these events, and White Lightning Events organisation at Kyogle Mtb Forest today. Congratulations to all riders. See more

10.01.2022 I absolutely love this quote! I think it sums us mountain bikers up perfectly! : Lysander Mendoza

10.01.2022 Racing today at Kempsey.. Good luck to John and all other riders. Good luck also to Jordan, racing at Kooralbyn today.

08.01.2022 The Central West Cycling Trail is awesome! If you have not heard about this yet... a hiking group from Mudgee put together a 400km + bike packing route around Mudgee, Dunedoo, Wellington and Dubbo areas... mostly on back roads and through State Conservation areas. Paddy and Tina did this easy going trail over a four day period and met a great bunch of cyclists and locals alike. Stopping at pubs regularly and cafes for refreshments it is a great way to get out and support our rural communities doing what we love. #outsideisfree #bikebagdude

08.01.2022 General maintenance is scheduled to occur on both the South and North trails at Captain Rous Park Mountain Bike Trails commencing 19 November 2020 for a one week period. This work is necessary to ensure the ongoing safety of users and will involve reshaping burms, jumps and rock gardens that have deteriorated over the years as a result of the parks high usage. We ask park users to respect trail closed signage and stay off the trails while this necessary work is being undertaken. Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.

07.01.2022 I feel this is such and important message a lot of riders need to hear. Let’s spread this far and wide and get it out there. Mountain bikers are such a cool bun...ch - they just want to enjoy riding and help everybody else get better. Leave your ego at home and just enjoy riding your bike and working to get better See more

06.01.2022 Destination Trails Pty Ltd have worked their magic through the valley and now our three new trails have names: Flowvid, Fireflyer and Longdrop Flowvid - you may... already know this track, it was opened in September, as the name suggests - fffflllloowwwwww. Blue grading but this ribbon of loam is suitable for most riders. A-lines for those who like to get air, B-lines for riders who prefer to keep tyres on the dirt. Approx 1400m Fireflyer - another 2020 reference, plus the valley comes alive with fireflies after dusk. Blue level, starts next to Flowvid and weaves down the valley via a series of berms then runs near straight to meet the bottom of Downright. Now open thanks to the rain on Sunday but take it easy while it beds in. approx. 1300m Longdrop - well, we have Bogroll so why the hell not! Plus the trail builders found a dunny seat in the bush when they were clearing and the name, erm, stuck. Black level, series of cascading man-made drops (A, B and C lines so you can build your skills all in the one place). Approx 400m long the trail starts about 20m past downright and meets Fireflyer at around midway, extending your ride to 1200m. REMAINS CLOSED until we get another 80mm of rain. 02.01.2022 Northern Rivers RT is one step closer Sections of the Murwilumbah to Casino line from Crabbes Creek to Condong and from Casino to Bentley are closer to being tu...rned into a bicycle and walking trail after legislation to close the line passed the NSW lower house. Trains last travelling along the Casino to Condong line in 2004, and the trail has sat idle since. According to a spokesperson for the Department of Regional NSW, the plan is to construct a rail trail from Murwilumbah to Casino. #nrrt #railtrails4nsw #railtrail
