21.01.2022 A celebration of our new Life Members - Neil Sievers (3 of 3) Neil (aka Bomber) first played cricket at Richmond Union as a youngster in the 1970's before disappearing off to St Stanislaus / Aruntas. He returned to the Club in 1986 when the amalgamation with St Stanislaus occurred. Exactly how he got his current nickname seems to have been lost in the mists of time but probably it was ha something to do with his luxurious beard which has never changed. Neil’s forte in c...Continue reading
20.01.2022 Congratulations to club stalwart and all-round nice guy Francis Raffaut and his partner Jess on the safe arrival of their third child, a baby daughter on Sunday night. Mum and Bub, who doesn’t yet have a name, are doing well. Dad is said to already be passing down some tips on how to bowl a crafty leg cutter.
15.01.2022 ' - . This is a story of the day when 2 double tons were made on the same day by RUCC players. A feat that hasn’t been achieved since. The 2 players were Shaun Guido McCullough and Shane Mouse Way.... It was Saturday the 18th of October 2003 and the 1st day of a 2 dayer for both of their teams. Shaun aka Guido was opening the batting for the 1st XI (in A Turf) with Adam Nev Neville, in a game against Ashburton Willows, at Citizen’s Park. Guido went on to make a fabulous score of 204. Guido and Nev put on a Club record opening partnership of 331 (which stands today), with Nev making a classical 141. All those that saw Guido bat knew he could certainly smack the ball about the park. It was amazing how someone who didn’t like training all that much could bat so well. The next highest scorer that day was Phil Pullar with 28. The 1sts went on to make 7/433 cc after their 80 overs and coasted to a 205 run win the next week. The old campaigner Bucky Rogers bowled 17 overs up the Richmond Ridge, taking 4 for 34. Shane aka Mouse, was also opening the batting that day, but in D Synthetic against our old rivals Glen Iris. Matt Pylka (33) and Mouse put on an opening partnership of 157, with the team making 8/336cc after having faced 83 overs. Mouse carried his bat through the Innings for a score of 215no, with only 1 cut shot. The next highest score was Richie Woolcock with 11. That’s how the D grade was those days!! Thinking that 337 was going to be an easy target to defend, it turned out to prove that Cricket is a funny game! Glen Iris were only 4 down, with 5 overs to spare, when they passed us. Meanwhile , back at the Clubrooms, Guido was sitting down quite content with his Jim Beam in hand telling the boys all about his big Innings ! When Mouse arrived back he asked Guido How did you go? (already knowing the answer). His reply was 204 Maaaaate. Mouse then then said to him ah well, I beat you by 11 and got the red ink! All Guido could say in has laid back manner was Maaaaaate!! Both the boys were exhausted after their double tons, but that didn’t stop them from keeping the bar staff on their toes all night. Guess who didn’t make training next Tuesday night?
15.01.2022 Our 2nd League Best & Fairest winner is Abbey Tyrell. Thanks again to Meg Philip for putting together the following write up. Abbey takes her abilities for granted and sometimes doesn’t realise how she can determine the fate of a game. Her batting at its best is top class and explosive, and the way she moves to the ball to hit it so well is lovely to watch. Abbey’s most memorable innings this season was 50 not out off 43 balls against Boroondara in Spring season round three ...(without any warm-up as her taxi driver went to the wrong ground!) Her bowling is also accurate and damaging. We loved seeing her develop her offside while batting and really introduce the power to her game. She became the ideal no.3 batter and won our RUCC girls Stage 2 Summer season batting award with most runs scored - 100 with an average of 100...unbelievable. To top that off with two ECA awards for the whole division Best Batting average of 139 and Best Player medal is testament to how influential she is in the whole competition. Well done Abbey, we can’t wait to see where you next take your cricket.
15.01.2022 Due to COVID-19 restrictions, we were unable to hold a Presentation Night to celebrate the individual efforts of our Senior Playing Group throughout Season 2019/2020. Those efforts deserve to be recognised, as such we’ll be releasing the award winners on Facebook and Instagram over the next two weeks. Standby.

05.01.2022 The performance of our Girls Teams in 2019/2020 was one of the highlights of the season. Not just because of their on-field performances that included a Premiership, but because of the spirit in which the girls played and passion they showed towards their cricket, club and teammates. Congratulations to two of our girls, Nadia Keily and Abbey Tyrell who won the League Best and Fairest in their respective grades. Abbey also won the League Batting Average with an average of 139.... Thanks to Meg Phillip for providing a write up on each of these young stars. 1/2 - Nadia Keily. "Nadia is a competitive and determined cricketer, who just loves playing the game. She had a great season over the summer for Richmond Union Cricket Club’s team Healy in the Stage 1 Stars competition. This year saw Nadia playing a new role as the more experienced player in a team of girls new to cricket, and Nadia proved to be an instructive and helpful mentor to her teammates. This was Nadia’s third season of cricket, and her perseverance and positive attitude during training and on matchday have seen her skill level consistently improve across all aspects of the game.

03.01.2022 A celebration of our new Life Members. Mal Allan - 2 of 3. Mal Allan arrived down at the club in 1977 with three other school mates looking for a game of cricket (three of this group would become inductees in the team of the half-century). He quickly... established himself as one of 1 st eleven opening bowlers. As well he was a handy batsman. In 1980/81 he played and was an important contributor to the 1 st eleven premiership team. That was the club’s last 1st XI Grand Final victory until the 2002/03 season in an era when cricket was tough! According to Mouse, Mal was an integral part of the RUCC in the old days when cricket wasn’t seen as a fashionable game around Richmond’. Mal continued as the opening 1st XI bowler throughout the 1980s. In the mid-1990’s he returned to the club for a season to play in the 3rd XI. Mal served on the committee and as the club Secretary throughout the ’80s. According to Mal, in those days being Secretary was a very different affair; there was no email or mobile phones. All correspondence was by ‘snail mail’ and the landline. Game scores were phoned in so they could appear in the papers the next day. If you forgot to get something out, the only option was dropping it off yourself! In 1986 the club merged with St Stanislaus, then commonly known as ‘the Arunta's’ (an Aboriginal tribe) to constitute the current Richmond Union Cricket Club. He was Secretary at the time and an important driver in the amalgamation. As well as being a fine cricketer, Mal is regarded by his mates as ‘a great clubman’’. To quote one ‘his life membership is well deserved and long overdue’. A number of people sent us information about Mal. When we rang him to tell him about his life member nomination, his most telling comment he made was ‘well the cricket is a bonus; it’s really about the people’. Thanks to Peter Rogers and Shane Way for information about Mal’s contribution to the club.
