23.01.2022 *** MYRTLE CREEK ROAD TO REOPEN THIS AFTERNOON *** Myrtle Creek Road has had a tough year. Dried and cracking soils from drought, toasted in the heat of two bushfires, and then inundated in the February floods. An inspection of the road after the flood found movement and cracking of soils surrounding the road's original pipe culverts caused during the drought, damage to steel reinforcement from the radiant heat from the fires, and finally the flood had finished many of the ...assets off. Work this week has successfully replaced some of the pipe culverts with box culverts to meet current engineering standards, better meet the catchment size, and achieve the best level of cover possible. These works will restore the road to pre-drought, fire and flood condition, and better protect the road asset in future flood events. The road will reopen this afternoon, with grading works on the open road to start Monday.

21.01.2022 It's National Water Week and how wonderful to receive to some rain in recent days. Now is the perfect time to appreciate water's essential importance for all of us. Looking after our local environment, which includes preserving our precious fresh water, is an important goal for Richmond Valley Council. It's one of the four priorities which make up our Community Strategic Plan, Richmond Valley Made 2030.... Council's truck washes at the Casino and Evans Head depots use recycled water. So too does the truck wash at the Nammoona Waste and Resource Recovery Facility, which has incorporated a reed bed system to purify the water before it is irrigated on site. 17.01.2022 *** LANDMARK AGREEMENT SUPPORTING NORTHERN RIVERS NSW BRAND *** Richmond Valley Council hosted the Northern Rivers Joint Organisation (NRJO) last week in Casino, leading businesses and regional stakeholders when they came together to sign a Memorandum of Understanding underpinning the new Northern Rivers NSW brand. Richmond Valley Council will continue to be represented on the steering committee through the NRJO whose aim is for the Northern Rivers NSW brand to achieve the same national and international recognition as the likes of the Barossa Valley and the Margaret River. https://northernriversnsw.com.au/ #northernriversnsw #discoverrichmondvalley

16.01.2022 *** SOME INFORMATION ABOUT STORMWATER DRAINS *** Significant rainfall is currently impacting parts of the Richmond Valley and flash flooding has reported on some urban streets around the Casino area. Please drive carefully and remember - never drive through floodwater. Floodwater can be much deeper, and faster moving, than it appears and conceal damaged roads, bridges and other dangerous impediments.... With a continued wet summer forecast, now is a good time to understand how Council's stormwater systems work. All drainage networks are designed to cope with a certain intensity of rainfall. Usually on local streets they are designed to cope with a storm event which has a one-in-five chance of occurring in any year. When water runs off it goes to an open drain, dish, kerb or pit. Open drains need to be kept as clear as possible as a small build up of silt or vegetation can impede their function. If you live near a vegetated open drain, it is well worth the time to keep it clear to ensure in an extreme rainfall event it flows as smoothly as possible. It can be a concern to see water filling up on low lying property or roads but this is the normal behaviour, up to a point. The water will usually stay for between 15 minutes to two hours, depending on the capacity of the downstream system and the intensity of the storm event. If water stays for more than two hours, the amount of water has likely exceeded the system's capacity. In this case please give Council a call and we will investigate. Drainage from your property to the street is the owner's responsibility. If there are drainage issues on the property they can often be improved through a development application and design process. If a neighbour’s property is draining water to your property sometimes a simple conversation or raising the issue may help to encourage them to fix the problem. Otherwise a written request for Council to investigate can be made. When homes are built the level of the floor in relation to the flood level and potential flash flood depth is specified, and should be at least 1m above the adjacent drainage network. If other buildings aren’t built at the same level they may flood, so it is recommend that valuable items susceptible to water damage are stored above this level. Stormwater and rain is a fact of life. Please call triple-0 in any life-threatening emergencies and remember - never drive, walk, or ride through floodwaters. https://www.ses.nsw.gov.au//learn-more-abo/know-your-risk/

15.01.2022 *** WOODBURN-CORAKI ROAD UPGRADE KICKS OFF *** Council has ripped the first patch of pavement on a three-year, $10 million upgrade of one of the Richmond Valley’s most important transport routes, Woodburn-Coraki Road. The initial round of works, expected to take seven days, will involve resurfacing a 270m section at the Woodburn end of the road, between the Rocky Mouth Creek bridge and the start of the 100kmh zone. ... This will include removal of the current surface of the road and replacing it with a premium asphalt mix to ensure durability, longevity, and a smooth ride quality for motorists. Woodburn-Coraki Road is one of the Richmond Valley’s most important roads, and its upgrade had been a long-term Council priority. It is frequently used by local residents, agricultural businesses, and regional travellers, and has long been a strategic focus of Council's road maintenance program. This project is fully funded by the NSW Government. Council will carry out $1 million of works in the current financial year, $2 million in the next, followed by $7 million in 2022-2023. Watch the video for more details.

13.01.2022 *** DRAFT RAIL TRAIL MASTER PLAN ON PUBLIC EXHIBITION *** The draft master plan for the Casino to Bentley section of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail is now on public exhibition, showcasing what promises to be a landmark tourism drawcard for the Richmond Valley and beyond. The release of the master plan follows the passage of the Transport Administration Amendment (Closures of Railway Lines in Northern Rivers) Bill 2020 in the NSW Parliament to allow the use of the rail ...corridor between Casino and Bentley (and between Condong and Crabbes Creek in the Tweed Shire) for a recreational trail, while retaining the land firmly in public ownership and ensuring it can be easily returned for public transport purposes, if ever required. The draft master plan outlines key elements of the $7.5 million project, which is being fully funded by the Australian Government. In addition to a detailed map, the draft masterplan includes design concepts for four rail trail precincts: the Old Casino Station trail head in Casino; a nearby precinct adjacent to the Primex site in Casino; the Naughtons Gap tunnel, a major scenic feature of the trail; and a Bentley precinct at the northern end of the trail. It also includes plans for the design of bridges and intersections, the refurbishment of Old Casino Station, landscaping and planting, signage, and the importance of connecting rail trail users to the Casino CBD. The Northern Rivers Rail Trail is an important platform for the growth of the visitor economy in the Richmond Valley, which is a key part of Council's economic development strategy. It will also be a fantastic asset for the local community and add another element to the relaxed and healthy country lifestyle the Richmond Valley already offers. The master plan can be viewed and downloaded via the On Exhibition page on Council’s website, here: https://richmondvalley.nsw.gov.au/council/on-exhibition/ Community feedback is welcome. 06.01.2022 *** BROADHEADS ROAD CLOSURE UPDATE *** During recent heavy rain a 2m sinkhole developed on Broadheads Road at Leeville on the approach to Ball Creek Bridge, forcing the closure of the road between Mongogarie Road and Skaines Road due to safety concerns. An investigation by bridge engineers has since concluded that a temporary measure, such as backfilling the void, would be ineffective, and a longer-term solution is required.... Regretfully, this means the road will be closed for at least three weeks until permanent repairs can be carried out. These repairs will likely involve the installation of sheet piles, which need to manufactured offsite, which will protect the bridge approaches from further scouring. While Broadheads Road is closed, an alternate route around the site is available via Shannon Brook Road / Summerland Way and Mongogarie Road. Council apologises for the inconvenience to residents and will continue to provide updates as the situation progresses.
