15.01.2022 Welcome to this week's Food Store Online I didn't plan to talk about the Polish Deli, on this, the 1st day of May, "May Day" as it is celebrated in Europe. No it happens by chance and a chance trip to the South Melbourne market last Friday. My great - aunt worked at a fruit stall at the South Melbourne market when I was a kid. My best memory are the bags of buttery, jammy short bread biscuits my Mother used to buy there. No coincidence my favourite memory is a food memory. ... With an hour to kill last Friday, someone convinced me to have a famed South Melbourne Market Dim Sim [you know I don't really eat pork], but honestly I did rather enjoy it, although somewhat surprised, an hour later I was pouring water down my throat, might have been the salt. We wandered looking for taste sensations, and stopped at the Polish Deli. Remember I'm not a pork eater. It was the salmon with the sign "wood smoke" that attracted me, true it was not exactly low cost, but wow the flavour was divine and I will be buying more. That was going to be it, but then the generous girl behind the counter sensed our interest and offered that we taste. It was great, there was a queue behind but this was our turn to be lavished and so we tasted...the country sausage, the wedding sausage, the Polish and the Swiss Frankfurts, the black pudding and more. Then we bought the country sausage and the wedding sausage [snicker], peach jam filled polish doughnuts and off course poppy seed strudel, oh and the most fragrant Polish peppermint tea. We've eaten most of the bounty, save the country sausage, designated to this week's menu, an oldie but a goodie, yes Cassoulet. Duck confit, roasted pork belly, Polish "country" sausage, beans et al!
