25.01.2022 It wasn't really supposed to go like this. . . The original plan back in '09 was to use my chemical curiosity to make a few bottles of #australianmade lube for XCO racing and share with a few close riding buds. That was #bikemilk and it worked well. I never had any plans beyond that. .... . But things escalated and it went beyond those few friends. It went out of Logan. It went beyond Bike Milk. It has even gone out of Straya. This chart roughly shows how the sales journey looks in the retrospectoscope. No downhill yet! . . Thanks everyone for being one of those "made just for you" riding buddies. See more
25.01.2022 The Australian road team have had a look at the TT course in Bergen. Here is Seb Berwick who has been using Bike Syrup during development and is the first rider to use it at World Champs level. One of the most talented juniors in Australia and a lot more race km going to be done with his engine. Seb races 21.1km ITT early Tuesday evening AEST.
24.01.2022 Had a bit of banter with Jeebus today: RM: Very nice result at your retirement party. I can remember you saying that placing top 10 overall was important to you so ticked that box. Lap time consistency was unbelievable. Not sure how you do it and I hope your kids dont inherit it, and become good at AFL or soccer or tennis something normal. Jeebus:...Continue reading
24.01.2022 Bike Syrup is now in the warehouse and ready to ship to your local bike shop. Full details on website: http://www.ridemechanic.com.au/index.php/products/bike-syrup The magic ingredient in this lube makes the drivetrain run very quiet - stealth mode. One mechanic went as far as to say "Quietest lube in Australia." It also lasts for a long time and does not pick up excess road grime. ... Sound too good to be true? Suggest you apply some and test for yourself.
23.01.2022 Riding conditions (ride surface, temperature, moisture, elevation, time etc), riders (power, technique etc) and drivetrains (12sp, 1x, e-bike etc) are highly variable. It is one of the reasons that drivetrain lubrication is such an emotive topic. Maybe riders should look at lubrication choice in the context of the power output being delivered through the drivetrain over time, which is the energy being invested (Wh). Riders pushing for longer periods between lubrication ...(commuters) or racing at high power output or using an e-bike are more likely to need a high energy rating lube like Bike Syrup. My personal preference is to ride for up to 2h a few times a week so I lube weekly with the lower energy rated Bike Milk. Someone in between could choose Bike Mix as an all-purpose option. Perhaps in future there will be an energy rating on each product to guide riders in selecting a lube which suits their particular circumstances.
22.01.2022 A magic moment in time.
20.01.2022 "What do you think about chain waxing?" - Part II . Aside from the purported friction improvements of a waxed chain, which are perhaps quite marginal, the other fabled property is its ability to reduce chain wear in a wide variety of riding conditions. Wear on the internal contact surfaces of a chain can be tested by measuring the distance between pins over a length of chain. Ride Mechanic usual method to quantify is to tension a chain and then measure distance over 10 links.... If no wear then the distance is 254mm. . If the internal cavities of the chain are packed with wax, or other debris, then full elongation is not possible. In this case using chain elongation is not a suitable measurement of wear. . The photo on the left is of a completely clean chain and is evidently very worn at ~2.4% elongation. The exact same chain, after thorough waxing, when all the internal cavities are thoroughly packed, has a wear reading of ~0.8%. . Chain elongation as an accurate measure of wear should be done on a clean chain. Any residual contamination, such as packed lubricant and debris, should be removed. If the packing is not removed measured wear can seem much lower than actual wear. Liquid lubricants which more easily flow inside a link are less likely to give such misleading wear readings than those packed with solidified wax. See more

19.01.2022 More extreme testing for #bikesyrup Perth-Brisbane 4640km in 16 days to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis research and the Childrens Hospital Foundation in Race To The Stars. Dave McAdam testimonial: "One application of Bike Syrup kept my chain quiet, smooth and efficient for 700km on my ride across Australia. Two applications got me across the whole of WA. Thanks to the guys at Ride Mechanic for really thinking about what bikes and bike riders really need to go the full distance."
18.01.2022 An enjoyable chat today with a very excited and emotional Holly Harris taking out the Elite Female Marathon Champs at Bayview Blast . Some post-race close up pics of the #sramaxs drivetrain which was prepared with #bikemix . Holly has learned to be very careful with chain lube and this is a perfect result. . . It is common to see a "nervous wee" lube application immediately before the start. It is much better to apply the night before and allow time for it to penetrate, load and coat the internal surfaces. Then on race day wipe down excess so it looks like this. Riders should trust the process.
18.01.2022 Which lube to use? This poster should help. . . Using a "power rating" is perhaps something new for cycling world. It is an important consideration in selection and nowadays many riders are familiar with their power output. A dry lube does not last as long as a wet lube, but it runs much cleaner. The dry Bike Milk is still the preferred choice for many riders and it was the first lube made by Ride Mechanic for XCO racers. But for others pushing down bigger power in elite r...oad, commuting, XCM or e-bike they want something longer lasting, hence the creation of Bike Mix and then the ultimate stayer - Bike Syrup. . . Weather conditions are not as crucial for lube choice, in my opinion. Yes people tend to go with a dry lube in dusty conditions and a wet lube in wet weather. These are quite useful guides for several reasons although there are many who use Bike Syrup in dry dusty conditions and Bike Milk does not wash off in water. All-purpose Bike Mix sits somewhere in between and has become the most popular choice for all conditions - baby bears porridge. . . Using power output to align with rider expectation on reapplication rates is how this selection chart is structured. See more
18.01.2022 Many, many old skool Aussie pros travelled to Europe and delivered the podium results via the French Club system. No special favours opening magic doors along the way. Just hard yakka, hard knocks and shedloads of talent which made them very hard and well respected. Incredibly impressed that 17yo Seb Berwick is doing the same and will soon be travelling to France to join the AG2R development team. So much respect for this young Brissy rider! https://www.chamberycyclismeformation.com/informations/
17.01.2022 . What do you think about chain waxing? . This question has been asked a few times recently. Given that the process of waxing is not simple (remove chain) and that it lasts around 300km (at max efficiency) it is not likely to attract a large number of supporters. But it is a question pondered by riders seeking the ultimate drivetrain efficiency, for those who demand the most efficient power transfer from effort to propulsion. .... A number of test rigs have been created to compare various lubricants under controlled laboratory conditions. In one of the more widely publicised and thorough tests a mixture of paraffin wax containing micronised particles of PTFE and molybdenum sulfide was found to be the most efficient lubricant. Power loss due to this molten wax treated chain was found to be 1.88%. In direct comparison, olive oil resulted in power loss of around 2.00% and Vaseline around 2.5%. This kind of marginal gain is worth considering for an hour record attempt and in bombing out his mind boggling average of 440W Wiggins would have blasted a further 65m (0.12%) using the ultimate wax lube vs the supermarket olive oil. . If a rider is considering molten wax lube for improved power transfer then they will find many other areas on their bike, in their riding technique and ride preparation which will provide bigger benefits. 17.01.2022 Two of my favourite riders will soon roll down the ramp and deliver everything they have got inside them out on the road. http://www.sbs.com.au//11819587988/LIVE-World-Championship http://www.tissottiming.com//00030E0105010501FFFF/default/
16.01.2022 If you have something nice to say, then please say it! Some recent feedback via ridemechanic.com website contact page. "I started with your Bike Milk, and I found it a bit thin (just my opinion) so i went to your Bike Cream, and I thought that was pretty bloody good. Last time I went into my local bike shop and bought some more Bike Cream, the owner gave me a sample of your new Bike Syrup to try. I applied it like I apply Bike Cream, and I cant say I was over impressed with ...it. So next time I did something I dont normally do, and i followed the instructions. Now, I would like to say that this stuff is beaut, it does the job its supposed to, makes everything roll a lot smoother, but equally as important, it doesnt leave my chain all greasy when I ride it (road bike). My only problem now is that i have a full bottle of Bike Cream to use up. Thanks & keep up the good work." See more
15.01.2022 Looking forward to a visit to the Bayview Blast this Sunday. Have been on sabbatical for such a long time. Need to get back out and meet some riders.
15.01.2022 Bike Juice degreaser concentrate is building a good reputation as degreaser concentrate. In early days of the black trigger there was some negative feedback on it not lasting very long. The main reason the trigger stops working is when pointing the nozzle downwards and the dip tube lifts above the Juice surface and sucks air. Some assume this is a terminal trigger malfunction. Just rotate the trigger so the dip tube submerges in the Juice and it should function again. It is... hard to see this inside a black bottle! The current white trigger is European made and for last 18 months it has been working fine for my recreational use giving it a spray every few weeks. For professional workshops spraying 5x a day then suggest buying the Ride Mechanic 1L pressure spray pack. If your Bike Juice is running dry why not visit your local bike shop and see if they can give you a topup for a bit cheaper than buying full new packaging? Many shops now carry the 5L and 20L bulk Juice for the workshop. Ask them if a topup is an option. And make sure the lid is on tight and bottle upright when you transport Juice. If it leaks in the car it is going to make a mess.
14.01.2022 A genuine "test pilot" is worth their weight in gold. . . This handful of riders will remain nameless because it has taken 10 years of giving lots of free product away in order to find them. ,... . I am so grateful for what they do. They ride various bikes, in lots of places, for long distances, regularly and in all conditions. All of them have extensive experience and knowledge of equipment engineering, options and performance. They are almost always very competitive so they train hard but not always pro-team and therefore have the flexibility to choose what they think is the best. However the one thing that separates them from the majority of riders is that they provide meaningful analytical feedback. All the time they are riding they are thinking and analysing and trying to understand. It is a real gift. I respect them all and I always listen to what they say. It may not seem that difficult to do. But in my experience only a small number of people excel at it and I would not be able to make any decent products without them. Long may they continue riding!!! 14.01.2022 This weekend is the 6th running of the Bayview Blast and I was very involved in the organisation of that first event with a handful of hardworking volunteers. . . The event has grown into something much better than we expected at the time, and so have these riders.
13.01.2022 Two inspiring points revealed in this graph of product sales. First is that more riders, shops and mechanics are using #australianmade bike products. When Ride Mechanic first started there was pretty much nothing available in the lube/cleaner segment that was made here. And now there is a good quality option which works well it seems there is a choice made to #buylocal Second point is that predicting the future looks relatively easy. More stockists, more users and more prod...uct supplied to Australian customers by the Australian manufacturing sector. It makes sense. Very big thanks to all those who made a choice and support the brand.
13.01.2022 Mud race can be carnage. But it can give the best smiles and when you finish it leaves some indelible memories. Some tips: Choose bike. Single speed or training bike better than the race steed. Choose tyres. Ones that clear mud with chunky tread and narrower.... Protect moving parts. Lube chain very well with Bike Mix or Bike Syrup and leave substantial coating on surface. Apply protective coating like Zalish on frame, suspension staunchions, shoes. Fit mudguard on front. Wear glasses - mud in eyes not fun. Leave favourite kit at home - choose an old one - black is best. Clean moving parts and glasses with water bottle squeeze during race. Stay out of granny ring to avoid chain suck. Cleanup: Remove mud soon after race - dont let it dry too long. Use hose then diluted Bike Juice (6 squirts in 4 litres water) with soft brush to remove residual mud. Spray Avaqua into brake calipers, onto chain and over staunchions. Dry bike thoroughly with soft rag and use compressed air if available. Lube chain thoroughly. Check brake pads and other moving parts for any wear. Book a service if it has not been done for a while. Next ride beware of any unusual noises. Keep the photos cos a great mud race is one you remember forever.
11.01.2022 Very happy to see Holly Harris take the elite womens lead in the Cape to Cape MTB yesterday. Her preferred lube is #bikemix and she may also be carrying some new tricks in her spares kit. It has been a superb second half of the year for Holly after some setbacks early in the year. Tough racing ahead for all riders with 2 stages to go and a very strong field.
11.01.2022 Spring is in the air in Rotorua where Ride Mechanic NZ are out on track supporting the Whaka100 MTB marathon this weekend. A huge event for the NZ cycling community and a fantastic place for brand promotion and networking. Awesome work guys
09.01.2022 Some nice videography from Rotorua showing a thorough Bike Juice degrease and then re-lube with Bike Mix. If using Bike Juice like this make sure the freehub body and wheel bearings are regularly maintained. Some mechanics remove the cassette, chain and chainring to degrease a very heavy build up. Regular drivetrain wipe down with rag and re-lube should prevent any buildup so no need for any heavy degreasing with the concentrate. Some bikes dropped in workshops have horr...endous grease buildup on drivetrain and a busy mechanic cannot see or assess/repair anything until they visit washbay for heavy hit with the Bike Juice concentrate and scrubbing brush. This is fast, very effective and the washings can be hosed down drain. Diluted Bike Juice is suitable for most bike cleaning. Over 25 Ride Mechanic stockists all around NZ now. A great place for riding and all other outdoor stuff if you havent been for the trip.
09.01.2022 Everyone knows that grass roots sport is run by volunteers and some of those volunteers put in huge hours and make a massive commitment for the cause. We know who you are and are very VERY grateful!! . . Organisations like Cycling Australia and Mountain Bike Australia - MTBA are major beneficiaries of this volunteer support in running events, organising club rides, meeting land managers and doing trailcare which all increase membership value. .... . This email recently landed and prompted the question, "What if direct costs for volunteer travel to club events became tax deductible?" It doesnt seem impossible to manage. The ATO have set rates for cents per km vehicle deductions. For sanctioned club events where club officials are travelling to organise they retain suitable records of travel km. Then the club treasurer approves and it can be claimed at end of FY. No doubt some would try and screw the system but it would only be a small number. The majority of genuine contributors, those who make the cycling world go around and rack up hundreds of km travel and volunteer hours per year, would at least be offered some return for all that they give. 08.01.2022 Some very good news for chain wear measurement. Park Tool have just launched their CC-4 tool. This is a brand held in the highest regard by mechanics and the power to supply to a global market. It is great to see them make this copy of the 10 inch tool which was created and made here in Brisbane in 2014. No they did not make any communication before copying. But that is all good because it is better for the cycling world if chain wear is measured properly.
07.01.2022 Very grateful to all those riders, mechanics, stockists and distributors who have continued to support and promote and use the products without much love from Ride Mechanic HQ. Thanks for being awesome!! For the last very long time we have been on a journey to create a tubeless repair system which is well beyond the capability of anything currently available. It is the best thing we have done and it is being patented. It will be spun out to another entity for commercial re...asons beyond the Ride Mechanic bubble. Test pilots with genitals of precious metals are continuing to push the limits around the countryside. This is data from one of them showing km travelled vs days in the life. The tyre had an initial tread puncture on day 19 at 750km, double puncture/pinch on day 20 767km, then double pinch at 1115km. These 5 punctures were each repaired within a few minutes and the tyre ridden as usual until it had worn out at 81 days 2300km. Although it is very exciting the path from here will have some bumps and there is no magic bucket of money being handed over to help. Just hard yakka on a tight budget. One day....
06.01.2022 This is a good article on road tubeless and if you have the time or interest, it is worth reading. It is a topic which creates a lot of debate and the author has done well to address most of the major points. . . Later this year some new things will appear which will assist in running tubeless more reliably. At that time the Ride Mechanic website will be updated to include a very detailed overview of tubeless technology for cyclists. The content will be created from the experience of 3 years of testing and many failures.
06.01.2022 March 2011 was when the first bike shop sold a bottle of Bike Milk. In July 2013 with around 30 shops on board it was a major advantage and an important step to handover the distribution to http://www.kwtimports.com.au/ who have done great things for sales in Qld, Nth NSW and Vic. Very happy to announce that Mitas Australia are now distributors for Ride Mechanic in Sydney, Southern NSW and the ACT. Ben Henderson and the team at Mitas have a passionate cycling background as w...ell as a growing reputation as a new age, customer service focussed wholesaler. https://www.mitascycling.com.au/ Working with reliable and ethical distributors like Mitas Australia and KWT Imports is an important step towards more shops and riders enjoying the benefits of Australian made cycling products.
03.01.2022 The festive season is almost here. Instead of slowing down and being generally considerate of others it seems many lift the intensity for a win and make an almighty lunge for the line. Hopefully everyone gets chance to relax a little bit at some point soon. Many thanks to everyone who chose to sell, use or recommend Ride Mechanic this year. Thanks for being part of the adventure.
03.01.2022 This weekend an Australian MTB icon will slap on his Downunder, splash on some Bike Mix then ride, sing and create much merriment for a day. "Mum and Dad are coming up to support me in my last 24hr solo, #23, back at Majura, back in October, it seems like a great place to pull the plug and an event that has given me more than I could ever give to it." http://my1.raceresult.com/66750/participants
02.01.2022 Happened across a tech article which shows the rate of decay of a chain pendulum velocity correlates with the coefficient of friction in the link using a relatively simple lab test. It seems to be accurate and presumably has the potential to test multiple variables of interest to cyclists. It is interesting to consider different perspectives and appreciate the fortitude of the investigator to try something different. . . 02.01.2022 When the riders blast off the line in MTB XCO Junior World Champs in Cairns this afternoon every single one of them has realised a dream. Some, like Cameron Wright - Cyclist , have had complete focus on the moment for longer than others. But all of them have huge talent, great dedication and have been selected to represent their country. A very special honour experienced by very few. Wishing all of the riders the best of luck for a tough battle in the tropical dust. Perfect conditions for #bikemilk
02.01.2022 Irrepressible expeditioner Kate Leeming is currently travelling 1500km through the most northerly region in India where the borders of India, Pakistan and China meet. It is often called the Third Pole because, like with the Arctic and Antarctic, it is extremely sensitive to climate change and traditional Ladakhi culture is one of the worlds most sustainable. Some of the roads are over 5000m above sea level and Kate has taken Bike Syrup and Moonshine along on the journey. 01.01.2022 This type of 4mm cut on road tubeless is common and at the top end of sealant capability at ~90psi. Effective seal pressure while rolling is usually between 40-70psi depending on age and efficacy of the sealant. This photo 90 min after puncture at end of ride. The filling of light coloured latex is obvious inside the cut. It can be confused for some kind of road debris stuck in the tyre. Riders often reluctant to reinflate to 90psi and keep riding long term after this kind of damage. So they replace. Or go back to tubes. Tempting considering this front tyre is only a month old with 1200km of riding. Would you keep riding? Revert to tube? Repair? Or replace?
01.01.2022 Some riders choose the beach. This presents numerous challenges for bikes and many experienced riders chose Bike Milk in these conditions. Intrepid adventurer Kate Leeming used it on her most recent expedition down the Skeleton Coast of Namibia, commenting: . . "The conditions were exceptionally hard on the bike, as expected - wet, salty sand, dry sand, etc. I always cleaned then lubed the working parts with Bike Milk - drive train and AWD system - every night and often a qui...ck brush down and lube during my lunch break. Amazingly the working parts lasted well over the 1600km, Im sure a major part of this was the regular attention and the quality of your lube." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lXHXHACF7Sk&feature=youtu.be
