25.01.2022 Working on a run of side plates for the new @theblackfootedpig It’s a run of 90 so that I get 80 and that’s a bit more than I like to do but longer runs certainly help me understand and refine the form- they will be just glazed inside with our charcoal glaze and fired in the electric kiln. #intheworkshop #WIP #contemporarytableware
25.01.2022 At the moment this bowl fits in the category of seemed like a good idea at the time. It may be that I’m not sure what forms I want to use the grub trail roulette texture on and so keep experimenting with it. Perhaps it’s a form and texture that I may keep and develop for @montanebonsai #intheworkshop #notsureaboutthisone #WIP
24.01.2022 We were unable to be ready for the Australian wide ceramics Open Weekend but we would still like you to see the new work out of our last woodfiring at the beginning of November. So please come and join us. 5th and 6th of December. #socialdistancing #woodfiredceramics #ridgelinepottery
23.01.2022 Some small dishes made from wheel thrown slabs. When I pack the larger woodkiln I never seem to have enough small pots to fill the odd spaces so I am trying to remedy that this time. They were inspired by a small slab dish by @takuroshibataceramics that we brought home a few years ago - we probably would have caught up with him this year around now when we were to work and fire with @artistpotter and @warrenfrederick. #intheworkshop #WIP #wheelastool #fireontheridge2020
22.01.2022 In 1980 when I was studying ceramics in Hobart I shared a space with John Bartram a very talented maker. Years later after his early death I ended up with several of his slump moulds from his workshop cleanup. Today as I was organising our storage space I came across the moulds and decided to test out some ideas with them - a chance also to reflect back on that time of early learning as the start of a journey. #intheworkshop #WIP
22.01.2022 Two views of the latest foliage vase for the woodfiring at the roughed-in stage. #intheworkshop #WIP #wheelastool #fireontheridge2020
21.01.2022 When these useya noodle bowls came out of the woodkiln underfired I wondered whether the extra fly ash on them would give me some problems when I refired them in the gas kiln - luckily they were fine and will be in the sale this weekend. #intheworkshop
21.01.2022 This woodfired foliage vase has a twin and both of them plus many more new works will be available at our open studio weekend. Don’t miss it. #woodfiredceramics #localmaterials #ridgelinepottery #fireontheridge2020 ... #buylocal See more
18.01.2022 A series of making images of a rope impressed vase- thrown, altered with asymmetric lugs, then textured with fragments of found rope from a local beach. #intheworkshop #WIP #placemaking #fireontheridge2020
18.01.2022 Early last week I would not have expected to have this Gwyn Hanssen-Pigott 3 piece still life grouping in our collection by the end of the week. Gwyn was living and making here in the earliest stages of my making journey and while I have pots she gifted and I purchased through those early years I didn’t have a woodfired still life arrangement. I helped her in the early stages of the building her last woodkiln at Ipswich and over the 2 weeks I stayed with her we talked among...st other things about her approach to composing the still life arrangements so it is wonderful to now have a small one to consider and play with. #fromthecollection #woodfireceramics #adayofftheridge See more
17.01.2022 It’s surprising how the value of a kiln load can be dramatically increased by having smaller pieces that can fit around bowls like these thrown strip dishes for @hamlet_hobart do - they double the value of what is on this kiln shelf without taking up any more space. #intheworkshop

16.01.2022 #postbypeta feeling grateful. When you work from home, even though it’s usually seven days a week, if your home is in paradise it becomes a whole lot easier. #ourworkinglife #ridgelinepottery #lifeontheridge #ourfortunatelife
15.01.2022 Up early this morning to finish off this clay sketch. sometimes I have a smallish amount of clay left over from what I am throwing and I can make something to test out an idea - in this case manipulating the shape of the rim into 2 more distinct and separated curved planes. I like in this image how the interior energy of the throwing lines is contained within the altered form and rope impressed texture. #intheworkshop #WIP #wheelastool #fireontheridge2020

13.01.2022 Over the last 3 years it’s been great to work with @kellyaustinceramics and facilitate her interest in incorporating woodfired pieces in her stilled compositions. It’s rare to see woodfired work in sculptures like this as it is often seen as a cultish outsider practice rather than another option in the rich and diverse field of ceramics valued for the special qualities it can bring to the tableau or the the table. Repost from @kellyaustinceramics using @RepostRegramApp - New work for ‘Moments of Darkness and of Light’ @beavergalleries. Opening 5 November. Thank you to Ben and Peta @ridgelinepottery for including me in their wood firing world and to @peterwhytephotography for the impeccable image. Beautiful joinery work by @t.morrisby.joinery
12.01.2022 Two views of a rope impressed vase from the trunk series. I use rope fragments that I find washed up on local beaches and the texture reminds me of patterns in the sand or wind and light on water. #intheworkshop #WIP #fireontheridge2020
11.01.2022 Obviously the secondary market for my work isn’t particularly strong as it had been for sale for 44 weeks, but I’m not disappointed as it means that this bowl made in the mid 90’s comes back into the collection/archive. I only made a couple of bowls with this combination of Freycinet blue glaze made entirely from local materials with a Kawai copper pigment beneath the glaze. Happy maker! #lifeontheridge #fromthecollection
10.01.2022 Visit to Waterview on Bruny Island yesterday to deliver pots from the last woodfiring to @johnwardlearchitects It provided time to play a little with the placement of the larger store pots and revisit the kiln we designed and supported the building of last year. #adayofftheridge #woodkilndesign
07.01.2022 Visiting friends last week this Yixing teapot on a shelf with shadow caught my eye. Teapots are difficult to resolve and when I see one that so completely expresses the synthesis of the elements of form it’s hard to go past it. #anightofftheridge
07.01.2022 Recently this pot came back to me - originally gas fired with an iron rich glaze made entirely from local materials, I decided to refire it in the wood kiln - it moved a bit on the shells as the glaze flowed over the feet. It’s a completely different and better pot now - just wish I had taken a before shot - but have included a dark moody one from its home in the collection. #fromthecollection
06.01.2022 Working on some platters with tweaked rim to build up stock for our workshop sale in 2 weeks time. #intheworkshop
06.01.2022 I hauled this Wedge series foliage vase out of the showroom cupboards yesterday to show a friend and am enjoying it again as I do a cosmetic repair with epoxy and bronze dust. It was a version influenced by the melting snow that caps angular dolerite boulders in the highlands. #fromthecollection #placematters
05.01.2022 Looks like I should get about 60+ beakers to a layer in the glaze firing if this bisque pack is anything to go by! #intheworkshop
04.01.2022 Some time ago I adapted this roulette to take a section of black wattle branch that had extensive grub trails. Today I took the opportunity to use it on this prototype for @montanebonsai and I’m happy with the result at this stage. #intheworkshop #WIP #placemaking #fireontheridge2020
03.01.2022 Yesterday there were Spring snowfalls on the highlands. Today as the morning sun streams in and the ocean swells in the bay are bent round the headland, these shadows from the white gum in front of the house are cast across our living space. #lifeontheridge #noticing #ephemeral
02.01.2022 Finished piece from the previous post. #intheworkshop #WIP #fireontheridge2020
02.01.2022 On our coastal ridge the black wattles ( acacia meansii ) flower late in the year. It’s a tree that has such a direct and indirect influence on the work - from the runnels of amber sap to the grub trails beneath the coarse shedding bark. It has a short life and when it splits dead branches we gather them for kiln wood and the sections with grub trails provide source material for roulettes and clay stamps that find their way into the work. The wood fires hot with a fine ash that drifts easily through the kiln and we try to use as much as we can tethered from our land for the few firings we have each year - luckily there is a natural renewal on our land from self-seeding that substantially maintains our supply. #lifeontheridge #placematters
02.01.2022 Three sides of an unglazed foliage vase from the edge of the firebox in the recent woodfiring. Pots like this fired on their side with a lot of melted fly ash are often complex in their surface as the ash melts and starts to run round to the underside where there is often a visually busy surface of wad marks and flame movement. Thankfully with this one all the surfaces came together - offering complementary options they won’t compete when in creative use. This one will be in our sale on December 5th and 6th. #intheworkshop #fireontheridge2020
02.01.2022 Behind the workshop is a collection of rocks from the land and a local dolerite quarry. Dolerite is similar to basalt in composition and is known as the rock that made Tasmania - it splits in the mountains and is rounded by wind and water on this coast. This rock in the centre has both those properties and they fuse into some of the foliage vase forms I make for the firebox and stokehole areas of the woodkiln. Yesterday as the grey matter of one of these rocks darkens with the rain the flowering branches of the Cape Pillar Casuarina nearby gave a sense of surface and foliage together. #lifeontheridge #ephemeral #noticing
02.01.2022 Yesterday at this time the late afternoon light burnished the land across the lagoon with a soft golden glow. #lifeontheridge #ephemeral
01.01.2022 This is the story of a glaze - our charcoal glaze shown in use @quayrestaurant in the second image and the journey to obtain a similar glaze in gas reduction firing rather than electric oxidation firing. In reduction this charcoal glaze was shiny and didn’t have the satin qualities that I have come to value. All of the changes I made to the glaze didn’t give results that satisfied me so finally I decided to test a slightly modified version of Val Cushing Black (VCB) from Joh...n Britts book. This gave me the satin glaze that I wanted but it was a very uniform and not so interesting black - so I decided to do this test that kept the base of the Val Cushing glaze consistent but changed the mix of oxide colour ants that produce the black in the glaze. The results are interesting and maybe a triaxial blend of these 3 possibilities is the next step in this glaze testing journey - just one of many that I pursue with both industrial and local materials. #intheworkshop See more
01.01.2022 We have had three glaze firings since the beginning of the weekend. The third just about to finish.
