16.01.2022 SEEDS PLANTED IN THE 90’s GIVE RISE TO TASMANIAN TREE OF LIFE As a university student in the mid to late 1990’s, my involvement with Right to Life NSW provided an amazing learning environment for me to be educated about the dangers of euthanasia and assisted suicide. It also gave me insights into how to effectively campaign against attempts to legalise these practices. The lessons that I learnt helped prepare me for what lay ahead a quarter of a century later. I have worked w...ith a number of other pro-lifers from Tasmania and other states over the last two years to co-ordinate the opposition to the legalisation of euthanasia and assisted suicide in this state through the establishment of the Live and Die Well campaign. We have: mobilised our combined networks to generate many letters and phone call to MPs, coordinated the direct lobbying of MPs by medical and other experts, professionally engaged with the mainstream media to provide an alternative view, assisted supportive MPs with relevant briefing materials, attended Parliamentary debates to encourage MP’s, helped to train the next generation of pro-life campaigners. It has been an honour to be involved at a leadership level in this campaign despite the hostile media landscape. Our efforts to provide opposition were motivated by the need to help Tasmanians but also people in other Australian states who are bound to face campaigns to change the law in this area in 2021 and beyond. Life is a precious gift no matter what stage we are at in our journey. May the heavenly peace of the stable in Bethlehem inspire your work in NSW and elsewhere to protect the lives of the innocent especially the young, the old and the sick.
