24.01.2022 If there is one thing I would wish upon every athlete for season 2021 is that they have complete clarity on what they want to achieve for the year ahead. Many athletes work hard without direction. Now while the grind is a part of the process, I can tell you with hand on heart that smart work makes the hard work easier. Clarity creates Confidence. ... What is the ultimate goal your athlete has set for themselves this year? And to breakdown the process....What do they need to do monthly / weekly / daily to achieve those goals?
22.01.2022 When it comes to team sports... One of the between coaches, parents and athletes is in their role on the team. Athletes generally have an idea of how they want to perform.... Coaches have a vision of where they fit into that team. Both want the best for the athlete. Yet, the lack of communication forces them to butt heads. - Are your athletes clear on their role? Have you checked in with them? - Are you training to become the best version of you in the role? Here is the advantage if you are. It's all about TRUST. If a coach can trust you in your role? That role soon becomes a little bit larger. Maybe it''s more minutes. Maybe it's more responsibility. The beauty of it is, that if you continually play your role well, that vision of how you originally saw yourself performing, starts to become a reality. . . - See more

Why is 100% of Junior training spent on skill, strategy and body development and 0% on developing confidence, focus and resilience? If at elite levels, Sport is 90% Mental and 10% Physical.... 20.01.2022 ? For the first time in almost two and a half years, we took some time away at the end of last year, until now. Giving us time to reflect on the journey so far and launch into the new year rejuvenated and ready to put our all into this thing. Part of that for us is analyzing and sometimes re-directing the goal-process. 2020 saw some amazing results with some dedicated, hard-working athletes. In 2021, our goal is to simply ...grow towards being an industry leader in developing the mental skill-set of junior athletes to prepare them for elite and professional level sport. We understand that most coaches only have limited time with their athletes. And that time is spent mostly building the physical skill-set of their athletes or sport specific strategies. So confidence, focus and resilience are part of a skill-set that is often neglected but is built through repetition (like anything else). At Pro level sport, they say the game is 90% mental and 10% physical. At Rise Above Adversity, we will continue to build mentally balanced, mentally tough and mentally resilient competitors. So that nothing holds the athlete back from competing consistently at the peak of their potential which often opens up further opportunities in their sport. We want to continue to raise the sporting talent and success, worldwide by building athletes head first. So, with that being said, ’ ? ?
19.01.2022 Change happens by not by Chance. If your athlete is ready to CRUSH season 2021 they better be ready to walk the talk. , ?
15.01.2022 Are there times when your athlete doubts their ability? Maybe it's when they go up to the next age group or the next level? Maybe it's coming up against certain opposition?... The worst thing about self-doubt is that it doesn't take much to set in and it can spiral pretty quickly if you let it - meaning that one mistake may not only affect the rest of performance but future performances as well. What makes it even more frustrating is that consistency in performance is affected the most and when you are pursuing elite levels in sport, this can suddenly become a major obstacle. Self-Confidence is the BELIEF in one's self and ability. In Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Beliefs create your thoughts which create your emotions which create your actions which create your results. Those results give the evidence that create your beliefs. Therefore, what an athlete is thinking about impacts majorly on their confidence / belief. So what does you athlete need to think about to give them the confidence to perform at their best? These thoughts become the performance triggers to consistent peak performance. If your athlete is ready to take their development to the next level, leave the word 'CONFIDENCE' below in the comments section under this post and I'll send you the "5 Steps to Supreme Confidence in Performance" video tutorial. For more valuable content, giveaways and support... head on over to our Private Facebook community - - for Athletes, Parents and Coaches looking to fast-track their athletes development. https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheMentalEdge/ -
13.01.2022 The photo above is of one of my clients playing his first game of professional level Basketball at just 16 years of age. Not to mention, 4 days before this momentous occasion, his Under 18 team had just won the 2020 South Australian State Championships, recognized as the best team in the State in that age group. Whether he is putting in the mental reps, building his body or developing his basketball skill-set, this young man is a product of his own !!... If your athlete has the ambition and drive but is just lacking the knowledge of how to perform at their best consistently, no matter the competition.... Go ahead and send me a message and I can point you in the right direction. Look forward to touching base with you. -
09.01.2022 ? What many athletes don't realize is that the Coaches that guide your athlete's development, have a vision of what they are capable of, in the same way an athlete or even the parent of an athlete has a vision of what they are capable of. Generally, when they aren't on the same page, this is where the friction starts to burn.... I remember making the Under 18 Division 1 side as a year 12 high school kid. It was the first time I had ever played at Division 1 Level. The performance that I envisioned and the Coach had envisioned for me were completely different. I didn't bother to ask about my role. I just complained about the four minutes of playing time I was getting from the end of the bench. Those four minutes were horrible too. I had set myself up in a reactive state before I had even crossed the sideline to check into the game. This resulting in the Coach trusting me even less. You see, Trust is everything in a player-coach relationship. From an athletes point of view, your role may not be how you would like it to be But.... I guarantee you this. If your athlete is clear on their role - which means they need to have that conversation with their coach with the awareness that it will most probably be different from their own ideas. If they deliberately practice to what is expected of them in that role. If they take that practice and perform that role to the best of their ability throughout competition. There is a development of trust between player and coach. This leads to more responsibility. This leads to a bigger role. And that vision they once had for themselves, starts to become more of a reality. Trust is . Trust is . Trust is . -

07.01.2022 - !! Question - How would your athlete feel if they had the tools to consistently perform at their very best on a consistent basis? Only right now, despite putting the work into their craft....... Their confidence is shot... They aren't getting the chance to prove themselves... and their performance? well it isn't at the level YOU know they are capable of... The worst thing is, they may even be slowly losing their passion for a sport they have loved for so long. The good news is... I can help!! Hi, my name is Callan McKinnon, Owner and Creator of - . As a young aspiring professional Basketball Player, I was someone who was really challenged by the mental side of my sport. It became incredibly frustrating that I couldn't translate the hard work I was putting in the gym, into consistent peak performance. I was plagued with confidence, resilience and focus issues that I had no idea how to fix. With time running out on my career and a goal to play at a professional level, I sourced my own mentor to help me achieve my life-long goal. This is when I started to develop my mental skill-set and started to turn in some of the best games of my entire career on a consistent basis. At the ripe age of 32, I played my first game in a professional environment. This fueled my passion for helping other athletes to achieve the same. The fact of the matter is, at elite and professional levels -Sport is 90% Mental and 10% Physical. Yet at Junior levels, 100% of their development goes into sport-specific skill, strategy and muscle development, leaving many athletes with professional aspirations to figure out the mental side by themselves. If your athlete is ready to take their talent to the next level, jump on over to https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheMentalEdge/ where we have a group of industry experts, people that have been involved in professional sporting environments, coaches, parents and a community of ambitious athletes to help YOUR athlete grow and develop to become the best within their sport. 04.01.2022 All the clients that I am currently working with at the moment are from the age of 15 and up. This is what I like to call the ' '. These are the ages where their bodies start to change, they are surrounded by people who are taking different pathways in life, they are learning more about themselves and where they fit in to society and of course their mind is developing and their interests expand.... It is the ages where many decide to quit their sports in pursuit other interests or be dragged away by the popular crowd, especially when they aren't seeing the fruits of their labor. The reason I know this, is because I recently did a survey asking former teenage athletes what their ambition was in their sport, at what age they quit and their reason for quitting. There is a lot of sacrifice that is involved in elite level sport. This is why an athletes desire must be strong. There will be days when you don't feel like training.. When your friends are going to a party but have you an early session the next morning. Or even in some cases where you don't fit in anymore because your friends don't have the same motivation as you. These are the ages where athletes will question if it's really worth it. Boxing Great Muhammad Ali said " . ' !! !" builds . ? -
03.01.2022 Have you ever found yourself frustrated that the training you're putting in isn't resulting in consistent peak performance? Does your athlete struggle with the motivation to put the work into their craft? Or maybe you put so much pressure on yourself to perform to the best of your ability that the self-doubt and negative voice starts to rear it's ugly head before the competition even starts?... These are just SOME of the challenges I went through as an ambitious young basketballer, on the road to competing in a professional environment. And to be honest, if I didn't fix these issues, I probably would have never had the opportunity to play at an elite level, and definitely wouldn't be here today coaching aspiring athletes to do the same. The fact of the matter is, none of this has anything to do with your athletes physical ability.... But it will sure as heck will impact on performance if they don't know how to manage the mental game!! Imagine how you would feel if you could ignite instant confidence..... Imagine if your athlete could stay focused and present in the moment no matter what is happening around them. Imagine how you would perform with all the tools that create the Ultimate Mental Toughness!! Until Sunday 11:59pm ACDST, I'm opening up just to my : . In fact, like I say to all my clients, I'm in your corner 24/7. Meaning you have full access to me. ..... You have to be prepared to take action and put in the work. If you can adhere to that... 03.01.2022 Curious to know....
03.01.2022 I began developing the mental game at age 30. I was what many call a 'naturally talented athlete' growing up which was cool when I would play against lesser opposition.... But when I started to climb the ranks of elite competition (in my beloved sport of basketball), I quickly realized I was missing something in my athletic toolkit.... I thought we were only given so much talent and if I was shown up, I would act out or make excuses. This kept me playing small and way beneath my potential for most of my basketball career. At the age of 30, knowing that I didn't have a helluva lot of time left to play at the top level, I invested in a mentor from Canada and gave everything I had into pushing for a pro roster spot. This is when my mindset started to change about what was possible. We started to scratch the surface of developing a mental skill-set and it was the formula to not only having my best ever season in reserves, but being the starting shooting guard in my very first game at Premier League level. This has become the foundation of Rise Above Adversity. It is why I continue to harp on about the importance of a mental skill-set to parents, coaches and aspiring athletes. Although, I wish I knew what I know now in my earlier days, it has allowed me to impact and fast-track the development of the next generation of athletes. And to me, there is no better feeling. When people ask me why I do what I do.... This is it. - .
