24.01.2022 Today’s Therapy Room I met one of my clients for a beach walk today where we discussed some long-standing difficulties she’s had around eating and body image. Well, that’s definitely the experience that some people have when seeing a therapist, but not here at @riseandrefine ! Human beings are doers. Fact. We have an innate need to engage in occupations. These occupations fulfil our need to not only survive, but to flourish as individuals. So why j...ust sit there in therapy and talk about what you’re going to do? Why not actually do it, and use that as the tool to sort out whatever is going on in your mind? This doesn’t mean we won’t delve deep, we will, but only if/when you’re ready. At @riseandrefine we find out what makes you tick , what you’re passionate about , or what you used to enjoy and we incorporate that into your sessions. Using activities (or meaningful occupations) in therapy is the perfect way to help you feel comfortable, to make your therapy more meaningful, fun and engaging, and more likely to be effective in the longer term. Want to improve your overall health but lacking the motivation to get your body moving? 21.01.2022 SELF CARE (art by @madelinekate_illustrates ) Don’t get me wrong, doing things like getting a massage, having a spa-bath, and watching a movie are all great ways to engage in self-care. I am a massage addict . They give you time to yourself, make you feel better physically, and help you to relax, but these benefits are often short-lived. They don’t go far enough to address the underlying issues in order to create lasting changes. - I’m talking about all of this because toda...y is International Self Care Day - which, like Valentine’s Day has probably just been invented as a way to get you to buy yourself a scented candle, or pay for a day at the spa. - I listened to a @waterpeoplepodcast recently and it finally gave me the words to articulate what I’m really trying to achieve through Rise & Refine. I wholeheartedly believe that the best way someone can engage in self-care is for them to invest in developing their neuro-literacy. What does this mean, you ask! Well, when we have good neuro-literacy, we have an in-depth understand of our own brain and how it works. We understand the science behind our emotions, we understand our neurochemistry, and most importantly we understand it better than anyone else. As a result we are more likely to make healthier decisions for ourselves, we’re going to have healthier and happier relationships and most importantly we’ll raise happier and healthier children either now or in the future. - As individuals, we owe it to ourselves to take responsibility and understand the root of our actions and get to the core of who we really are. For some, this might seem a daunting process, and that’s why it can be helpful to have someone to guide you along the way. To challenge you to dig deeper, to hold space and provide comfort when it feels overwhelming, and to give you a high-five when you make a breakthrough. If I asked you to name which core beliefs influence your day to day life the most, you’d probably find that a pretty hard task. They’re so deeply ingrained in us, so implicit, that we don’t often know what they are, yet they dictate so much of what happens in our life. Being able to identify what these beliefs are and how they influence you is one of the first steps you can take in refining your life.

Often when setting our goals, or making life decisions, we base them on what’s going to help make us more successful. But when you actually stop and think about it, we so easily slip into making these decisions and plans based on what society has trained us to believe success is. We’re basically hardwired these days to be...lieve that success is determined by our monetary wealth, our physical looks, our material possessions, our extravagant holidays, and the number of followers on our instagram account. - So I challenge you to stop and have a think about what success really means to you, as an individual. When you’re 85, kicking back in your rocking chair and reflecting on your life, what are you going to look back on as your most successful moments or achievements? Write them down, and stick them where you’re going to see them on the reg. 13.01.2022 You’ve gotta name it to tame it - Swipe across for a nice little tool to help us to better name how we’re feeling. - Why is naming your emotions so important? Well, research has shown that by naming those more difficult emotions, it can help us to take the power out of them and lessen the burden they may place on us. After all, we can’t change what we don’t notice. By shifting from I am sad, to I am feeling sad it helps our brain to realise that WE are not that emotio...n exclusively, and that the emotion is temporary. Being able to name how we’re feeling also helps us to communicate our needs to our loved ones, and make better decisions about how to act on that particular feeling. - This isn’t just for those emotions on the top half of the wheel though, it also works for those on the flip side. We’re so busy and distracted these days that we often forget to notice or embrace those positive emotions. Being able to notice when you’re feeling the good stuff, will help you to practice gratitude and better understand what it is that’s making you feel that way. Over time you’ll realise who, what, where, when and how those possy vibes work and eventually you’ll find yourself creating space and opportunities for them more and more often.
