25.01.2022 School holiday time again. Kids desperately welcome them. For the first couple of days they feel fresh and optimistic. There's talk about going on outings, organising activities, and maybe accomplishing a goal or two. What actually starts to happen is late nights becoming even later, late mornings, pjs till noon, sedentary and excessive tv watching, increased use of social media and video games, lethargy creeps in, loss of motivation, loss of creation, and loss of connection ...with self, others, and nature. Structure helps. Having a list or a calendar showing activities, events and outings, and goals to accomplish will help. Natural and traditional basics like cooking, baking, sewing, gardening, crafting, reading, board games, science experiments, story telling, charades, dancing & singing, visiting grandparents etc ... these work. Let's break the cycle of excessive screen time, excessive me-time/solitude, excessive disengagement from people and nature, excessive disconnection from self and family.

23.01.2022 While less commonly understood than other forms of domestic violence, financial abuse/ecomonic abuse is one of the most powerful methods of keeping a victim trapped in an abusive relationship. There is always someone ready to listen, to believe, to respect, to care, to support. Recovery begins with one phone call.... even if it's an anxious whisper or an almighty roar Rise and Shine Counselling & Play Therapy is ready to listen and support.... 21.01.2022 In regional and remote areas especially, there is a gap in mental health services for men. The stigma and barriers associated with mental health is even greater for guys. Please share to let them know free, discrete & immediate support is available. https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=3373041976090209&id=224766874251084

19.01.2022 Recently we've received calls from frustrated parents who are close to falling out of love with their "who are you and what have you done with my child?" adolescent. Before they've realized it they have a hormonal, moody, rebellious, reclusive, secretive doppelganger ... parents are throwing their arms into the air, help! https://www.facebook.com/139782679378764/posts/4429237587099897/

18.01.2022 ... and this is why we enjoy our swinging after sessions at Rise and Shine. Sometimes we can pop outside mid session for a bit of self-soothing if we're processing something big.

17.01.2022 Pleased to announce we are now offering medicare supported sessions. Congratulations Rise and Shine on reaching this milestone.

14.01.2022 Feeling stressed? Physically or mentally fatiqued? Often feeling like you're being "walked on" or ignored or taken advantage of? Are you experiencing low self esteem or self worth? In many cases of DV and early childhood trauma and dysfunctional attachments, R&S works with clients to increase their understanding of, to support clients in implementing and maintaining (healthier) boundaries. Dr. LaPera puts it together perfectly: https://www.facebook.com/656473371142935/posts/2168077393315851/

12.01.2022 One of the biggest concers we're hearing about from parents is Help! I don't know what to do about my child's meltdowns and tantrums. It can be heartbreaking and demoralising watching helplessly as your normally happy little cherub turns into a mean screaming fighting kicking sobbing protesting ball of force! First up, it's not a reflection of your parenting capacity ... it's a reflection of the complex underdeveloped agency of the child and trying to intervene/meet the child... at exactly where they're brain and nervous system is at in that moment. https://www.nytimes.com//parent/kids-tantrums-advice.html

12.01.2022 Happy Spring everyone! Insightful message of hope. Humans are wired for connection whereas trauma rewires us for protection.... Beautiful survivors, when it feels cloudy and grey please reach out for connection. See more

10.01.2022 Sadly not all of us experience healthy Valentine's Day can be difficult for survivors of abuse within their relationships and families. Survivors of emotional abuse, especially the type perpetrated by malignant narcissists or otherwise toxic partners, can struggle on a holiday like Valentine’s Day. Whether it was because this holiday was consistently ruined by the narcissistic partner during the relationship or because they’re still healing from the toxic relationship, sel...f-care for survivors is essential during this time. I asked survivors the advice they would give other fellow survivors of abuse and their responses were incredibly inspiring and moving. Here’s what they shared. https://thoughtcatalog.com//24-powerful-valentines-day-re/

07.01.2022 We have a massive population group who've gone into acute anxiety; victims of crime and sexual abuse. Masks = hands of abusers smothering/silencing victims' mouths, perpertrators hiding behind their masks. https://www.abc.net.au//sexual-assault-survivor-/12486728

05.01.2022 Step 1. Black and White thinking is exhausting and pointless. We can chose Grey; it's the new black...it is, it's everywhere. Step 2. Either/or thinking is so yesterday! Embrace both. You're welcome. Step 3. Tell your naughty unproductive thoughts to get lost ... you know, as you would with annoying mosquitoes Step 4. Find the comfy middle ground. After viewing from multiple perspectives, arrive at a reasonabile reconciliation. Step 5. Time for a reward ... retraining old h...abits/old thinking styles can be hard. Pina colada anyone? Step 6. DBT therapy and ACT therapy could become your best friends but no pina coladas, sorry. See more

05.01.2022 Oh, the places I have been! You can call it this telehealth, teletherapy, telepractice, online counselling. Or call it that, ... zoom, skype, whatsapp, facetime, video chat. We've found a new way to connect at this time of safe at home and social distancing (even though it's been around for 20 years). Most reasearch suggests that teletherapy works just as well as in-person counselling. Teletherapy is mental health counselling over the phone or online. During therapy sessions, we can see, hear, and interact with one another in real time. The actual therapy is the same as the therapist would deliver face-to-face, using the same traditional techniques only it's done with a computer, laptop, or smart phone. Some of the benefits: accessible to more people offers greater flexibility reduces wait times creates more privacy no travel time required contactless connection to protect our health & others Who wouldn't want to relax on their couch, with a cuppa, warm blanket, and cozy slippers ... bliss ps pics are for demo purposes only

04.01.2022 Fight, Flight, Freeze responses are well known, but have you heard of fawning? Working with abuse/trauma survivors, Diana brings this knowledge to her clients. They have said it's the first time they've heard of it. It provides answers to many of their questions. Their bodies immediately loosen as relief trickles through them. "Though fawning tends to assuage anxiety and make you feel 'safer' in the moment, it can actually silence your voice and prevent you from healing or su...rrounding yourself with people that truly care about your well-being."
