One of the things many women dont want to get is too muscular, as in having overly bulging biceps and ripped shoulders that just dont look right.... Well we have the answers to your questions today. Whether or not you will get bigger muscles (hypertrophy) depends on three basic factors: genetics, gender, and training intensity. You will always need resistance training and a positive energy balance to gain muscle. Gaining muscle is always hard work and needs progressive training with weight. So fear not that you will grow too big too fast. Why? Because hypertrophy (or growing oversized muscles) demands you to lift heavy weights often and to be fair, thats not the type of place we are at Rise. Heres the premise: Beat The Bay ~ now that looks different to every one of us. It could be that you havent walked that far (7kms) in a long time; it could be to crack the 1 hour mark; or it could be to break the world land speed record! Whatever it is, its YOUR challenge. We have put in place a wide range of COVID minimisation strategies to ensure we all have a safe event. We are incorporating staggered start times, social distancing and sanitising stations just to name a few. But you know us, we are here to support you working towards this event. 20.01.2022 This weeks blog article: Fitness and Ageing Some gyms seem to cater to a younger demographic. Lots of bulky muscles and hot pants! And while there is nothing wrong with that, its not our style at Rise Personal Training.... We are much like a fine bottle of red! We know we just get better with age! And, the truth of the matter is that we are all getting older. Unfortunately it is a reality that with age comes a natural decline in our bodies and our brains. While we cant stop the clock, there are ways to keep your muscles active and your brain sharp. Exercise has proven to reverse age related declines in our bodies and minds. First things first if you havent reached mid-life yet, maintaining an active lifestyle will ensure youre able to get out of your chair when youre 80. Studies have found that age related decline starts earlier than previously thought. At age 50 our balance, strength and endurance are already diminishing. By age 55 studies have found participants that did not engage in regular activity had thinking skills similar to those of a 90-year-old. Here are few exercises and their anti-aging benefits. Walking You dont need fancy equipment to implement this into a habit. Daily walking at least 30 minutes a day is proven to prevent or manage heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. It helps strengthen your muscles and bones and enhances your balance and coordination. If thats not enough to get you up and moving, walking also helps protect against dementia, peripheral artery disease, depression, colon cancer and even erectile dysfunction. So many changes; so many unknowns and more seismic shifts than I can recall for a very long time. Here's what I want you to do, write yourself a letter that acknowledges yourself for all the things (both big and small) that you have done this week, this month and even this year. Times when you have shown resilience, commitment, kindness, really anything that you should be proud of. Do it! I dare you... You see... too often we are hard on ourselves and we tend to beat ourselves up in our head for the stuff ups, the inadequacies, the mistakes... So for once, put aside your modesty and really dive deep into the pieces of you that you may not have acknowledged in a while. And then, share what you learnt about yourself through this simple idea. Not what you wrote because that's a private conversation between yourself and you! What did you realise by being your biggest advocate for that moment? As a kid its really easy to take everything for granted, I mean your parents are supposed to put up with all your nonsense right! But as you get older and get your own responsibilities and kids of you own you start to realise all of the things your parents do for you. All of the sacrifices, all of the hard work and most of the time with very little appreciation for it all. 10.01.2022 Lets talk about sleep! In the world of elite performance SLEEP is probably the biggest focal point at this moment. For years, elite athletes have been concentrating on their workloads and trying to out perform yesterdays output but there has been a big shift that us as the general public can take from.... All of the research as well as the incident evidence shows us without doubt that we all need 7 to 8 hours of quality sleep each and every night. Try this for an idea: Prioritise YOU this week. Make sure you get yourself to bed at the right time to give yourself a proper nights rest. And do it for as many nights as possible, just for this week. Then assess over the weekend. Ask yourself how you feel. Check in with your body and see if it makes any difference at all. My bet is that it will!

If you want to save money up for a big purchase you need to make sure you leave more money in the bank than what you spend. Repeating that pay packet after pay packet means you are left with the money necessary to buy whatever it was you were saving for. It's quite predictable. If you know that every week you can save $100 and your dream purchase is $1000 then you will be able to walk into the sto...re in 10 weeks time. Dropping body fat is a whole lot similar. But it takes a little bit of attention on all the things that are consumed and the energy used up in between. 08.01.2022 We often get asked, how do I get a flat stomach? Are you ready for the answer? Its a bit of a long post but it all makes sense and I promise, its worth the read: The abdominals are just like any other muscle group: in order for definition to become visible, they must grow larger and the fat that lies over them must decrease.... What makes the definition of the abdominals so difficult to see is that they are situated in the area of the body that contains the most fat. However, training the abdominals is only half the story. The second important part is nutrition. I can guarantee you that there is no specific diet for flat stomach or to "burn belly-fat". Its all about balance between your energy expenditure and caloric intake. If you want to lose fat, you have to get less energy than you use. Of course you should eat healthy food (I bet that you know what that means!) and ensure sufficient protein intake etc. In the end you will get results you want when you combine progressive training (resistance+endurance) and proper food.
