16.02.2022 The Sporting Pathway students from Colac Secondary College are closing the gap on change of direction training to agility training What’s the difference? Change of direction is pre planned and is a great way to develop the necessary movement skills to transition to enhanced agility which is a rapid whole body movement in response to a stimulus. ... In this case we use Blazepods to provide a random stimulus. Great work once more team !!!

27.01.2022 Well done to the Mercy Regional College students who completed the term 4 ‘Sport4life’ program. Although Covid restrictions have limited the time we could spend with the students they made great progress. We look forward to seeing you all again in 2022

23.01.2022 As lives in Victoria slowly return to normal after many challenges in 2020 remember that an improvement based mindset, day to day, week to week, is sustainable and allows you to achieve your academic, work, sporting and personal goals. Improve something each day. No matter how small. Small gains accumulate over time to great growth. Stay well

22.01.2022 Are you a cyclist looking to improve your performance? Troubled by pain on the bike? After many years working in the world of cycling as a team physio and high performance director I would be happy to help you optimize your cycling experience.

It will be great to have what is hopefully an uninterrupted term 4 of athletic development and strength training. Stay well and safe.

21.01.2022 Cycling can be a demanding sport and many cyclists often ride in pain. Particularly knee and back pain. There is so much that can be done to improve your body for the bike and reduce pain. If you would like to chat to me about a cycling related pain issue or would like to learn more about performance programs in the gym for cycling let me know.... I have spent many years assisting cyclists, junior to Masters. Recreational to elite enhance their cycling performance and experience both as a physiotherapist & high performance director. 20.01.2022 Most sports require you to be able to safely and effectively change direction. Developing these skills in young athletes is a key component of optimal performance and injury prevention. This morning Colac Secondary College the Sporting Pathways students practiced just that. Well done!

20.01.2022 Into their second year of the Sporting Pathway Program these students are doing so well. With lots of quality movement pattern preparation done in year one you can see the results when it now comes to weight training. Getting started with good hip hinging technique under load.... 18.01.2022 Knee injuries and knee pain are common in teenage athletes so it’s important to integrate strength training that focuses on control of your own body weight without excessive twisting motion occurring through the knee. Single leg mini squats are a great starting point and can be incorporated into a dynamic warm up regime. Colac Secondary College

18.01.2022 Congratulations to the students of Trinity College in Colac for completing a 4 week training block in the ‘Sporting Excellence’ program. You all made wonderful progress with your speed, run technique, agility and strength.

17.01.2022 Why do teenagers need athletic development programs? There are many reasons why developing a wide array of skills are needed to help teenagers improve their athleticism and sporting abilities. Particularly given declining rates of play in childhood. Sport specific train does not always develop key skills or qualities such as -... Optimal running technique and speed. Agility. Strength (which needs specific approaches NOT adult based programs historically based on body building). Mobility. Reaction and decision making capabilities. All within a culture of improvement NOT high performance. High performance training is not appropriate for development of young athletes. High school aged athletes need a long term athletic DEVELOPMENT framework. And remember you dont have to be the team superstar to think of yourself as an athlete. So if you (or your son/daughter) would like to IMPROVE your athletic qualities utilizing proven scientific approaches then let me know. If you or your son/daughter is injured or needs rehab please let me know. I consult in Geelong (Leopold), Birregurra and Camperdown. Over many years now I have combined my qualifications, knowledge and experience in physiotherapy, sports physiotherapy and a Master of High Performance Sport to assist thousands of high school based athletes of all levels and abilities, across a variety of sports including those who are participating at the highest levels of their sport locally and internationally to improve. The Regional Institute of Sport is exactly that - Regional Our difference: We are not exclusive Everyone is welcome. Why? Because everyone deserves the opportunity to improve. I am really excited to offer these programs and services to the teens of the Western District. Birregurra, Colac and Camperdown. If you are keen to learn more please let me know Thanks Stuart Canavan RIS Director [email protected]

15.01.2022 Fall forward, keep your head buried, go for it Acceleration practice!! Colac Secondary College

15.01.2022 After a period of isolation its been great to get back to developing athletic qualities with the Sporting Pathway students Colac Secondary College Many of the students continued their training through the period away from school via online sessions. If you are an athlete getting back to training after a period away from your regular exercise of sport it is essential to gradually resume your training and always use a dynamic warm up before high intensity efforts or game si...mulation. Good luck returning to your sports.

15.01.2022 The current global health situation is having me revisit some previous sports that I once enjoyed. For me thats golf. Today I got back to the driving range for the first time in years. I started playing when I was 8 and played regularly until I was 16. Then study and life changed my sporting path. ... I now look at golf differently to that of my childhood. Golf requires making athletic qualities. Strength, coordination, mobility and power. Strength training fuses beautifully with a golf swing. Like many sports undergoing an assessment of your limiting factors and then engaging in a structured, individualized program to overcome pain or enhance your performance can be developed. So if you are keen to improve your golf game please let me know. A combination of physiotherapy, sports physiotherapy and high performance experience and knowledge might be just what you need. 0499 999 274 Stay well Stuart

15.01.2022 Never underestimate the importance of doing the basics very well if you want to improve as an athlete, young or old. I personally wouldnt focus on the 1%ers too much. Execute the 99% really well instead. Consistently. These students from Colac Secondary College despite an interrupted 2020 have approached their athletic development training, including strength work so well. ... It was great to get back and use the facilities at Bluewater in Colac today. #risvictoria #exerciseimproveslife #colacsecondarycollege

07.01.2022 Strength training for athletes should focus on movement patterns not muscle isolation based exercises.
