25.01.2022 SACRED SPACE Creating a sacred space within your environment isn't just important for life, it's also important in death too. As your draw closer to your own end-of-life, your world becomes much smaller and more focused. Those things that seemed big and momentous in life, often fade into the background as you narrow down your views on what's truly important.... For everyone this is completely different, but one of the ways you can honour this for loved ones who are coming closer to an expected death is to ensure their space is surrounded by things that truly hold meaning. Things like art, pottery and artefacts, photos and books are things to consider when you look around their space. As well as the people who hold vigil throughout their final weeks, days, hours and minutes. We know it's so hard to consider such realities, but we also know that putting in a little bit of preparation can make this sacred time even more meaningful. We’re in awe of this stunning original artwork by our favourite artist, @jaivasicek. See more

24.01.2022 COMING HOME TO YOU We spend so much of our life dreaming and reaching and pushing and striving, hoping that one day we will reach utopia. But what if utopia was within you all along? What if you made it your life's purpose to reclaim your inner power; your inner voice. Coming home to a peaceful place within you that opens up to surrender and authenticity and shining your light for all those around you to benefit from.... Isn't that utopia? We sure think so. 23.01.2022 There’s a few things all the families we help have in common, but the most profound is that they want to ‘do death differently’. They want a personalised funeral service for their loved one, brimming with meaning and intention. They want a modern funeral planner who educates them on all their options so they feel empowered to make the right choice for their family and their budget.... They want to take their time on the day. Not be shuffled in and out in just 45 minutes (90 mins if you pay extra) while the next funeral procession waits outside. They want it to be beautiful. Because, who wouldn’t want that? They want the whole damn process to be easy. The death of a loved one is hard enough! We get it. We really, truly understand the wants and needs of our clients and we strive to do it all differently. So differently! Because we believe it NEEDS to be, if not for anything but consumer choice. This picture was taken at the service honouring Glenda. Our head funeral guide, @yaz_trollope, arrived at the venue to set up with the stylist and caterer at 12pm for a 3pm service (because: beautiful). The family arrived at 2pm to have a shot of Kahlua and take a moment before the 150 guests arrived, and left at 9pm - slightly drunk and feeling slightly lighter, knowing they honoured their loved one in the most perfect way. Cheers to that Pic @beczacherphoto See more

22.01.2022 R U OK? Yesterday was R U OK?Day, a day we here at Rite of Passage Funerals honour and appreciate. However we’ve deliberately held off posting this until today as a reminder that everyday is R U OK?Day when it comes to checking in on your people. This year in particular has been incredible tough for us all. We’ve been faced with immeasurable difficulties that have called on our resilience like never before. But for many, it’s been too much.... A report released by the University of Sydney’s Brain and Mind Centre shows that the suicide rate is likely to increase by at least 13.7% over the next 5 years, so now, more than ever, we need to rally around each other, build our support systems in times of need, enhance our coping skills with help from a trained therapist, and reach out when your gut tells you to check in on your friend, because they might not be in a place to talk. And remember, if you’re ever experiencing suicidal thoughts, there is help and people who really care. Call @lifelineaustralia. There is hope on the other side. @citizensofthesun See more

20.01.2022 Bye 2020! Well, that was a crazy year. For all the ups, downs and sideways tumbles, 2020 has proved to be a year that saw us all grow and learn in ways we never knew possible.... The sense of loss this year is no doubt profound, however through the mess and ugliness of 2020, beauty and insight has emerged, too. The light and dark of life in full view. For the families we helped this year, thank you. Thank you for trusting us with your people and enabling us to honour life, death and legacy in new (and at times very intimate) ways. We’re so sorry for your loss and all you’ve had to endure this year. 2020 has encouraged us to think more creatively, more boldly and more bravely than ever before and the results have been remarkable, if not challenging. May 2021 bear the fruits of what we planted this wild, crazy year. Onwards and upwards, humanity! See more

The importance of this work is never lost on us. Each and every life is precious, valued and honoured - from babies to centenarians - and creatively and compassionately navigating the process is key.... 20.01.2022 When it comes to grief, there’s no hard or fast rules. Nor is there a timeline you can follow to get through it faster. Really, the only thing you need is time. So gift it to yourself. Time for self-love and self-care, time for pain and time for healing. And eventually, time to find your new normal.

20.01.2022 It all starts and ends here

20.01.2022 In the lead up to the launch of our eCourse "How to Create an Unforgettable Funeral", we thought we'd share some of the many insights we educate you on, because THIS IS STUFF YOU ABSOLUTELY NEED TO KNOW! So, who do you call when someone dies? It depends. Here's the rundown: If the death is natural or expected and occurred at home, the first thing you need to do is take a deep breath and try to slow everything right down. There’s no need to rush here. Cal...l your family members to alert them of the news, and then call your family GP (provided they have seen your person in the last 3 months) and ask them to fill out a Death Certificate or Life Extinct Form. You might also need to notify other parties, like palliative care teams or anyone else involved in your end-of-life care plan. Once that’s done and you’re ready, it’s time to call your Funeral Director and discuss with them how long you’d like to keep your person at home before they come to collect them. If the death has occurred in a nursing home or private hospital, the staff usually notify the family doctor, whereas if the death has occurred in a public hospital, it is usually the doctor on staff who administers the paperwork. Again, when you’re ready, call your Funeral Director and let them know the passing has taken place and that you’re ready for them to bring your person into their care. If the death is unexpected, or your doctor is unable to establish a cause of death, the police need to be notified and will likely need the coroner to establish cause of death. The police will make arrangements to have the person who has died taken to the mortuary for further examination, and once you’ve enlisted a Funeral Director, they will liaise with the police/mortuary team/coroner on your behalf to bring the person who has died into their care before the funeral takes place. 17.01.2022 To our beautiful Melbourne friends in particular, we’re thinking of you. You’ve got this!!

16.01.2022 What are you going to do with your 'in between'?

16.01.2022 "Rite of Passage Funerals was born out of a mission to remove the secrecy and stiffness traditionally associated with funerals and create real, deep connection with our families instead. Through this connection and our unique set of processes, we’re able to curate personalised funerals that truly reflect the person who has died and honour their legacy in an entirely new and modern way." - Yasemin Trollope, Founder & Head Funeral Planner

16.01.2022 Confused about the current rules with funerals amid COVID-19? Here are the facts as they stand right now. In Queensland the laws around funerals have, in fact, been eased, allowing up to 100 people at a funeral service provided they're still social distancing (1 person every 4 square metres). In NSW, the maximum number of people who may attend a funeral is the maximum number of people allowed on the premises, which is one person per 4 square metres.... Places of public worship, funeral homes or crematoriums can have up to 50 attendees (without the 4 square metre rule) provided non-household contacts can maintain 1.5 metres of physical distance. Funerals at a place of residence can have the greater of 50 people or one person per 1.5m). And yes, home funerals are ‘a thing’ and are INCREDIBLE! People attending the service will be required to supply their name and contact details so that they can be used for contact tracing. We've had lots of calls lately from distressed family members saying 'we know we can't have a funeral right now but...’ however, we're here to let you know you CAN have a funeral, and an unforgettable one at that. Reach out if you need us. See more

But rather than remain broken, Dee from Kawa Heart Studio is using her grief as a tool for spiritual awakening and uncovering her soul purpose. Our Founder and Head Funeral Planner, Yaz Trollope, chatted to Dee over FaceTime for her Growing Through Grief blog series. In their deeply personal and inspiring conversa...tion, Dee shares her grief experience, what she's learned, how she's grown and her toolkit for shifting the intensity that grief brings with it. 14.01.2022 Expanding our services down to Sydney was a big deal for us, but receiving feedback like this from a beautiful Sydney-based family we helped makes it so worthwhile. I’m very pleased to provide a review for Yasemin and the team at Rite of Passage Funerals who organised my father’s funeral. During such a difficult time it was so lovely to engage with people who were empathetic, sincere and understanding during this time. The approach taken is far superior to a run of the mill... funeral parlour with the styling absolutely beautiful, a tailored event and a real focus on celebration of your loved one’s life. Oliver was our celebrant and he was fantastic, I was nervous about discussing the proceedings given the emotions that go along with it but he made us feel comfortable from start to finish and our guests commented on how genuine they felt his delivery was. It was a truly beautiful event and my mother and I felt supported the whole way through. Some guests even commented it was the ‘best funeral’ they had been to - as far as such an event goes it seems strange to receive that comment but it really did reflect how wonderful a service it was, emotional yet uplifting as well. If I could give more stars I would - there is no comparison! Highly recommend!! Thanks - Camille S See more

14.01.2022 MEET MEL Mel came into our orbit when she called on us to arrange her beloved Pop’s funeral. 14.01.2022 AND IT’S LIVE... A little while ago our founder Yaz Trollope had the immense honour of being interviewed by @melissaambrosini for her podcast, The Melissa Ambrosini Show. They talked about life and death and spiritual wills and legacy letters. How to plan for a good death and live your best life right now, while you have the chance.... Seeing (and hearing) it go live today swells up feelings of pride and excitement and, of course, a little bit of fear, because there’s no conversation about death that doesn’t involve that. A huge thank you to Melissa for allowing this important conversation to take place on her platform. The gratitude is endless. Listen, learn and let us know what you think. 13.01.2022 HONOURING GEOFF Nothing was going to get in the way of honouring Geoff’s remarkable life in the way his family hoped for. An outdoor service at Braeside Events Gold Coast allowed for 30 guests, who each received their own little ‘treasure bag’ of personal items to take part in the ceremony. This included shells collected by the family from Geoff’s beach adventures, a custom designed postcard to take home in memory of Geoff as a nod to his passion for travel, a pen and ‘In... Loving Memory’ card to add to the Memory Wall and a packet of tissues. The warm, love-filled ceremony written and presented by Within Me included laughs and tears, and a shot of Geoff’s favourite Scotch. And after they shared their tributes and ritualised the significance of this moment, guests enjoyed their own (huge and delicious!) individual grazing boards by The Poor Girls Pantry on the amazing picnic area styled by Klara's House. Words can’t describe the challenges families are faced with planning a funeral in the times of COVID-19, but it doesn’t mean they can’t be beautiful and just as sacred. This here is proof. @ Braeside Events Gold Coast See more

13.01.2022 LEGACY Every funeral we’re trusted to arrange brings with it its own gifts, most of which come in the form of lessons through legacy. Take John, for example. He was 84 and lived a life so fully focused on family that it was clear this was his lasting legacy. His eulogy bubbled over with anecdotes relating to what an amazing father, grandfather and great-grandfather he was; his family meant everything to him. His widowed wife was his one true love, their story appeared one... of deep respect and commitment. While John didn't accumulate much material wealth during his lifetime, he was extremely rich in love. At each funeral we arrange our lives intersect with the person who's passed, and through them we learn that life is about the person you choose to become and the legacy you leave behind. This is John’s legacy and we're so grateful to have learned that lesson from him. We all have a lesson to share and a legacy to pass down, what will yours be? (Note: if you need a little help in this department download our free guide ‘4 Heart-Centred Steps to Writing Your Spiritual Will’. Link in bio). See more

12.01.2022 MEET BEN Ben’s entry into funerals came after attending a unique end-of-life event that opened him up to the possibilities of honouring a life. The authentic and unique service helped to provide clarity, comfort and identification with the person we knew and allowed us the opportunity to come together to mourn. We heard from friends who formed a choir and sung, participated in adorning his coffin with local native flowers from the bush he loved so much, all whilst gazing... out over the harbour, reflecting on the moments passed. At the end of the day, we still hurt, but had started to heal, embracing solace and understanding that we can persevere. It was here I realised the many different options available to honour the departed and I wanted to help others to experience a different way to say farewell, he says. Ben is now one of our trusted funeral planners and celebrants, helping plan unforgettable end-of-life events in Sydney. His passion is working alongside families at their time of need, providing support and guidance while exploring the many possibilities when it comes to creating an authentic end-of-life event. Seeing his role as a privilege, Ben establishes lasting connections with families, creating trust to fulfil their wishes during what can be a very vulnerable time. See more

11.01.2022 (NOT SO) HAPPY FATHER’S DAY Today is Father’s Day. The day we treat our dads to an epic brunch and buy him books and socks and random electronics he’s not sure how to turn on (just us?). But for those whose dad has passed away, today is a stark reminder that their dad is gone.... So, in honour of all those legends who have lived, loved and passed, today we take a moment to celebrate and remember YOU. From your favourite brunch spot to the way you laughed at ridiculous jokes, your stories, your kindness, the memories you created - these are the gifts you left behind and we thank you for them all. To those of you feeling your grief just that little bit deeper today, we’re sending you all the love. We see you, we understand your pain. It’s okay to feel like sh*t today. If you know someone whose dad is no longer with them, check in, let them know you care, because Father’s Day has a whole new meaning to them now and if your dad is gone, share your favourite memory in honour of him . @bayleafcafe (our favourite brunch spot) See more

11.01.2022 Hi , I’m Yasemin, the founder and head funeral planner at Rite of Passage Funerals and I thought I’d pop into your morning scroll to introduce myself to our new followers. Firstly, welcome! I’m so honoured to have you on the Rite of Passage Funerals ride, where we take a different approach to death and end-of-life planning - removing the morbid and macabre in favour of storytelling, personalisation and modern touches. I started Rite of Passage Funerals because I was onc...e in your shoes, and when faced with my options for planning a funeral, I felt discontent with what was available. All Rite of Passage Funerals’ events are completely personalised and bespoke, imagined with your person in mind. Our systems and planning processes are completely unique in this field, which is why a Rite of Passage Funeral is like no other. With Klara's House on styling, The Poor Girls Pantry on food and Celebrant Lady Love on ceremony, we worked with Murphy’s courageous parents to plan the sacred send off they wanted for their little fighter. 09.01.2022 One of the most rewarding things about our work is that we have the ability to help families when they need it most, and over the past week, we've been helping Murphy's parents with the most challenging thing they've ever done - plan their baby's funeral. Now, you can help them too! These courageous parents are determined for Murphy's legacy to live on, which is why they've set up a fundraiser in her honour to help Gold Coast University Hospital - GCUH purchase an essential ...machine needed by NICU to assist future 'Murphys' to make it through their fight. Consider it insurance. Why should you care or bother? But it’s not ALL about you. It’s also about relieving your loved ones of the sole responsibility of planning your funeral when the time comes. There are SO MANY key decisions to make when planning an unforgettable end-of-life event, and leaving it for your family to wholly arrange after you’ve passed adds pressure when they need it least. 08.01.2022 HOW TO CREATE AN UNFORGETTABLE FUNERAL About a year ago, our founder + head funeral planner had an idea to create a resource that made pre-planning funerals even easier. Why? Because she witnesses firsthand what happens what happens when people don’t plan for the inevitable. The stress, burden and worry placed on families navigating the intricate waters of funeral planning is tremendously difficult, at a time when they need things to be easy.... To solve the problem we’ve created an eCourse that helps you and your people pre-plan your funeral in 5 easy steps. The course includes a comprehensive eBook, which educates you on ALL your options, including where to spend your money, if you need a funeral director, how to curate a ceremony, what to do with your body when you die and what type of service options are available to you. Then there’s the Workbook, filled with Q&A prompts to help you get clear on your priorities, and ‘My Unforgettable Funeral Plan’, a detailed form that, when filled out, gives your and your family the greatest gift of all - peace of mind.
