11.01.2022 EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY compared to PHYSIOTHERAPY Exercise physiology is a relatively new profession in the industry and there are many grey areas where it overlap...s with Physio. Both are university qualified for a minimum of four years, endeavour to optimise health and reduce disease and disability and participate in evidence based practice to ensure their treatment is effective. However, physiotherapists specialise in the area of treating musculoskeletal disorders and specialise in the hands-on manipulation of the body to facilitate healing, whereas an EP will prescribe exercises to facilitate a return to functional capacity. Additionally, a physiotherapist would usually deal with the acute phase of an injury, while an EP manages the sub-acute phase or long term management.
