22.01.2022 Last week was very busy here on the turf farm. It was mostly a week of orders for Construction Companies. 450m2 of Sir Walter went to North Star for a new café. 1000m2 of Sir Walter went to Goondiwindi for a couple of houses.... 400m2 of Kikuyu went to an Armidale Catholic College and 440m2 of Sir Water was delivered here in Inverell for the new Aboriginal Armajun Center. Amongst all the deliveries there were many on farm pickups of Sir Walter. Yesterday we received our first big frost of the Season and there was a follow up one this morning, quite a bit earlier than usual. We will let the turf have a couple of more frosts on it before we start to cover with the Frost Blankets. We also have a new member of the family, another cattle dog, MOUSE.

20.01.2022 It’s been a very busy week here at Rivendale Turf. A load of Sir Walter was sent over to Narrabri and Wee Waa on Monday for private customers. We started harvesting the Kikuyu this week, with a full truck load (1000m2) going to a Construction Company in Goondiwindi.... We have also had a full load of Sir Walter that went to Gwydir Shire Council, for Bingara’s newly upgraded town Pool. There has also been lots of pickups and local deliveries. 15.01.2022 Last week we delivered some Sir Walter to a few customers in Gunnedah. Our turf is very frost burnt of course at this time of year, but it is still okay to put down now, with Spring just around the corner. Our Kikuyu turf won’t be ready for harvesting until October sometime.

14.01.2022 8 Ways to Keep Mosquitoes Away You might have tried some common solutions, but there are some things (especially when combined) that might help. DEET (Topical Insect Repellents)... When applied to the skin, it creates a vapour barrier on the surface of the skin which deters the mozzies from making contact. Different repellents include differing percentages of DEET, with a higher percentage providing longer lasting protection. One of the best products available is from Bushman Repellent which has a range of products with DEET amounts up to 80%! Mosquito Coils This might be a fairly common go-to, but when combined with the use of topical insect repellents you get pretty good protection from mozzies. Traditionally mosquito coils were made using pyrethrum, with many now containing pyrethroid insecticides to kill the mozzies and/or citronella to repel them. Mosquito Repellent Plants One of the easiest ways to get a leg-up on the mozzies is to plant mosquito repellent plants. Some options include; lemon balm, lavender, peppermint, marigolds, citronella grass and catnip. The great thing about these is they smell great, but the mosquitoes don’t like the scent, so it keeps them away. Try planting these plants near your entertainment areas or have some of them in pots closer to where you need them. Eliminate Stagnant Water Stagnant water is the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes. Where possible, try to avoid stagnant water in places where it’s not needed. Remove any old buckets or containers that have filled up from rain. For birdbaths and pet water bowls, try to keep the water fresh by replacing it regularly. Garlic Who won’t it keep away! No surprises here really, mosquitoes aren’t big fans of the smell of garlic; if you boil it and use the water for a spray, you can target some problem areas where the mosquitoes congregate. Coffee Grinds Love the smell of coffee? Well, mosquitoes don’t, so make use of your coffee grinds. Leave them in a bowl and singe them with a lighter to spread the aroma. Lighting Insects see lights differently to humans and are highly attracted to light sources, especially ones that emit intense heat and brightness. Bug lights have a bulb that is coated with a yellow, opaque coating that is less detectable to mosquitoes. As a result, they won’t swarm around your light source, which will mean they are less likely to spoil your evening outside. Create A Cross Breeze It can get seriously hot outside in the summer, even in the evening. If you utilise a fan to help cool you down, it will also lead to less mosquitoes as they will seek shelter where the air is calmer.

05.01.2022 Time to show your mower some love as you are mowing less. Check the oil (four stroke) Checking your oil is a very important step to ensure you’re looking after the motor, a pretty fundamental part of the lawn mower. If it hasn’t been changed in over a year or your mower has been used for more than 30-40hours, it’s best to drain it and fill with new oil, if the oil has been changed recently make sure it is topped up to the optimum level.... Check the air filter These things can get very grubby and full of all sorts of dirt and debris if not changed or cleaned every so often. A dirty filter will cause your lawn mower to run sluggishly and inconsistently, which isn’t ideal for ensuring a nice even cut. Clean the mowing deck It’s not the most important part of lawn mower maintenance, but it is still very important. Making sure your blades are unobstructed, with a clean deck that won’t lead to a build up of potential weed contamination and reduce the life of your mower through the body deteriorating unnecessarily. *Make sure you disconnect the spark plug and the throttle is off before cleaning the deck. Make sure you read your lawn mower maintenance guide before undertaking any maintenance, particularly when using a 4 stroke lawn mower to ensure you don’t cause any damage. Check the blades This one is more of an obvious one, you want to cut your grass not tear it! A nice sharp set of blades will be the most beneficial way to love your lawn by looking after your lawn mower. If you are handy on the tools and know what you are doing, then you can sharpen the blades if there is enough meat left on them. Otherwise putting on a new set every now and again can be a lot simpler and provide a better result. Better yet, drop it off at your local lawn mower shop and have them give it a once over. That way when the growing season begins again, all you should need to do is make sure you have fresh fuel in the tank and away you go

04.01.2022 Here at Rivendale Turf, we have just completed our annual Winter maintenance/servicing program, to ensure all machinery is running at its best, in ready for the upcoming Season. Large amounts of engine and hydraulic oils are used, along with many different types of filters. Also our delivery forklift has had a full chain replacement, to make sure no breakages occur.... All farm machinery is serviced by ourselves and the Delivery truck goes into a Professional Diesel mechanic.
