25.01.2022 The Katie cups . Tomorrow I get to have one full throwing day . Over the school holidays I try not to work much in the studio, but instead I try to get as many of the back-end jobs done in times where the kids are happily playing. This frees me up for clear creative time. Last year I started leaving my phone in the house whilst working so I could have uninterrupted periods with my work, and keep focused on letting the task at hand be creative flow. Sometimes it feels to m...e that you need to move against the grain to avoid being frantic. To be slow and purposeful. We all know this is more productive and more satisfying, but still the distractions and mindless activities seem to prevail. . This year it is my intention to make small changes which support a more conscious approach to my life in balance. Not all at once, and not in a way that I get down on myself, but just one small choice at a time. . I can do better, and I’m happy to know that! 24.01.2022 This bowl is a flashback from maybe 6 months ago, thrown from pure #wildclay. I don’t often do that anymore so I rather regret that I let it go . You might recognize this colour from a lot of my recent work as slip decoration, which makes the precious resource last a lot longer, and has led to some really beautiful finishes. It has also taught me a lot as I’ve experienced the clay change over time, and tested out lots of different variables. The latest variation is in the ...kiln as we speak, seeing if I can get a more robust surface with the addition of a little commercial clay, which typically makes up the main clay body. . I still have 1 clay ball left, and have strangely held off on making the final piece. I think I’ll make a special bowl for our family . 21.01.2022 I would love to talk about she sheds not a great phrase, but please stay with me . Lots of people have been asking about my usual studio workspace as they tour all the artist studios of the region for @margaretriverregionopenstudios this month. Although I have been spending one day per week at the lovely @evansandtatestudio over the last year or so, this set of images shows my usual tiny space from which I throw, dry, glaze, fire and all the rest :) it also houses my admi...n space and finished works. This room was adequately designed to be my office as a building designer, though it soon became the studio work space when my clay obsession outgrew the kitchen table. . The important thing is that I have a space which is mine. I apologize to no-one for it’s messy state. I manage the clean up, the unfinished projects and works-in-progress without explanation. I come and go as I can, and as I need to without needing permission from anyone. These seem like small and obvious things, but as I was moving a hobby into a business, it became a really important feature of my dreams feasibility. Although I understand that not everyone can claim a room, I would like to put it out there, that if there is a space...be it a nook or the whole garage, that you can claim for your own creative endeavors, don’t underestimate the difference it could make in your persistence and regular practice. Just in the practical sense of time grabbing without having to consider set up and pack away is enough to warrant a dedicated space. This post is by no means limited to women only, the same applies to anyone who would like to feel they could more easily get to work on their creative ideas, however I suppose the first group of people that come to mind are mums who have put their own needs to the side for a long time and need to remove some hurdles. . I presume the term she shed was derived in response to the classic blokes shed which often comes as a given with Australian houses, though the female equivalent has been a little slower to catch on. 14.01.2022 You know that thing when you decide to keep something special for yourself, then after it being on your website for 2 months it sells that very day? Oh well, it’s just clay, but of a rather sentimental variety. This bowl is #wildclay taken from our garden, and thrown in pure form. I now use this batch often in slip painting but rarely like this anymore as I’ve come to see it as a little too precious. 10.01.2022 Hey so I have some exciting news and some big questions . If you were booking a break for yourself, what features are MOST important to you for a special experience? ~ beautiful finishing touches? ~ lovely art and books?... ~ comfort? (Think #hygge) ~ nature and a view? . As a building design (me) and construct (paul) Team, we are looking into an extension to our rural home to offer people a special stay with all of the things I consider most important. I’m excited to think about creative retreats and a beautiful space, workshops and hideaways. . As a building designer I have always been drawn to sustainability and creativity. This is mirrored in the ceramic love you might know me better for now. Similar to my clay work, I usually think a little outside of the box, and look to include the unexpected in beautiful and practical ways. With this space I see dappled light, breezy baths under the trees, yoga space in the morning sun and creative supplies ready and waiting.
