11.01.2022 It won’t happen to me!!! An unlocked door is just waiting to be used by a thief Every day, all over Queensland, homes are being broken into by people looking for a quick and easy way to fund their lifestyle. One of the really sad things about this is that many of these offences can be prevented if you have locks use them, if you have an alarm use it, if you have cameras turn them on, if you have any form of security make sure you use it the way it was designed to be used.... We all know that burglary happens but until it happens to us far too many of us are complacent. Many people don’t take their security seriously and take unnecessary risks it always happens to someone else. It is difficult to know how you will react or the financial, physical or psychological impact a break in to your home might cause. If you leave doors and windows open when you leave the house, leave your gates and sheds unlocked, hide keys under the mat or the flowerpot, leave your valuables where they can be seen from outside, keep large amounts of money in your home or leave your car unlocked, you are a potential victim. Many home break and enters are done by the opportunistic thief he/she sees an opportunity and takes advantage of the chance that they can get in, steal something and get away without being caught. An unlocked or open door is an open invitation to this type of offender. There are ways to guard against this and it all starts with a security conscious mind not just when you go away on holidays; all day and every day. An unlocked garage door is an invitation to thieves Many Police Divisions publish Crime Wraps that give brief details of offences in their areas, how the offences occurred and what was stolen if known. A quick look at 3 such Crime Wraps for the month of June reveals that in those three areas there were 85 offences in which homes and vehicles were broken into and, in the case of motor vehicles, some were stolen. That is a lot of offences but the really sad thing about those offences is that 28 of them occurred through unlocked home or vehicle doors; that represents one third or 33% of the total offences. It did happen to those home and vehicle owners, most likely because they were careless and didn’t practice good security. If you think security and practice security you will go a long way to protecting your property and maybe it won’t happen to you.
