18.01.2022 [MEDIA RELEASE] Katter's Australian Party candidate for Rockhampton Christian Shepherd is very excited to announce his pledge to support the design, supply and ...installation of the Fitzroy River Floating Pontoon. Home to the iconic Fitzroy River Barra Bash event and locally operated tour companies like River Cruises CQ, Rockhampton and the Capricorn Coast are quickly becoming a fishing and boating mecca. The proposed pontoon will be a multi-use facility to allow commercial river cruises and other similar operators to have a central, safe location for loading and unloading passengers. "There are still some design intricacies to smooth out, but once completed this will represent a great opportunity for multi-day events like The Capricorn Food and Wine Festival, the Rockhampton River Festival or Rockynats, Mr Shepherd said. It will especially help cater to passengers with handicaps as well as the very young and very old, who have a bit of a rough time climbing in and out of boats or accessing boat ramps. It will also provide a boarding location within the CBD. Historically the saltwater side of the Fitzroy River has been very economically significant to the Rockhampton region, especially after the first meatworks began production in the 1870's and we began exporting beef to Europe as well as supporting successive war efforts through the early 1900's. Mr Shepherd said this had obviously dwindled over past decades so it would be good to see some economic activity fire up again. I think this will very nicely compliment Council's significant investment into the Rockhampton Riverside Precinct, he said. "Situated on the banks of the Fitzroy River within the world-class Riverside precinct on Quay Street, the new floating pontoon will allow locals and visitors to have an enhanced connection to the river and support the safe use of water sports equipment and small boats. This project will leverage existing businesses to further activate the area and increase visitation through supported river tours, boat charters and acting as a passenger transport terminal for the Rockynats car festival and supporting existing and future Fitzroy River ferry operators. Katter's Australian Party is proud to support small businesses and tourism as well as invest in infrastructure that support the way of life that we enjoy so much in regional Queensland. The mighty Fitzroy River is at the heart of Rockhampton and the KAP want to get that heart beating again.
