14.01.2022 African Swine Fever (ASF) and Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) are serious animal diseases not found in Australia, but if either made their way here it would be dev...astating for our farmers. During two rounds of testing of pork products seized at international mail centres at Brisbane, Perth, Sydney and Melbourne in December last year, and in January and February this year, 24% of all samples tested positive for ASF virus fragments and 1% tested positive for FMD virus fragments. Importantly, these findings do not change our FMD or ASF-free status. With up to an 80% fatality rate for infected pigs, no vaccine, and new harder-to-detect variants emerging in Asia, ASF could cause enormous damage to our pork industry, ruining the livelihood of farmers across the country. Meanwhile, an outbreak of FMD in Australia would lead to the closure of major livestock, beef, lamb, dairy and pork export markets with serious economic and social effects in other sectors, including tourism. Studies have estimated a large multi-state outbreak of FMD in Australia could result in economic losses of $50 billion dollars over 10 years. FMD is considered the biggest animal disease threat to Australia’s agriculture. Meanwhile, an outbreak of ASF could cost Australia $1.5 to 2 billion dollars over 5 years. We need everyone to be more vigilant. It is more important than ever that people do the right thing and don’t bring, mail or import illegal pork products into Australia. Anyone seeking to import meat should follow the correct procedures or face increased penalties.
