24.01.2022 When playing in the kitchen, it’s often fun to cut up pretend food and serve it up on a plate. In our Nursery, we let the children use plastic knives to cut up their fruit and grow their fine motor skills. By cutting grapes into halves and the ends off of strawberries, we were able to explore that curiosity of preparing our own food, while also taking ownership for our eating and enjoying a healthy, delicious snack! Now enrolling for Nursery in 2021. Contact our enrolments team on 3102 1303 to start your journey with us today.
24.01.2022 We are always learning self-help skills by using food! These consist of fine motor activities that will build up our children's small hand and finger muscles to help them learn how to hold a spoon, fork, knife, and even pencils. The goal of this fun food activity was to pluck the small kernels of corn from the cob... Although, our nursery children just couldn’t resist taking a chomp out of the yummy corn! Now enrolling for Nursery in 2021. Contact our enrolments team on 3102 1303 to start your journey with us today.
24.01.2022 Taste testing is a great way to encourage children to try new foods. The Toddlers had their very own taste testing table and it was a very popular experience, with all the children excited and willing to try the 4 ingredients of the day. They did a great job at recognising the flavours and taste and then matching the ingredient with where it came from by using pictures on the table. We cant wait to taste 4 more ingredients next week as we explore our 5 senses further.
24.01.2022 Shape, colour and object recognition are all just another starting point for improving cognitive development in our toddlers! Encouraging a child to explore colours and objects helps to develop their descriptive language skills, while matching objects helps improve visual perception and memory skills!
24.01.2022 Our Nursery babies love exploring the natural world around them. They discover all sorts of leaves and sticks in the playground and recently we decided to use these natural materials to paint with. Using trees as a canvas and leaves as a paintbrush, the children mixed their own paint colours and created little masterpieces!
24.01.2022 Sensory bottles are fun to play with and a great way to recycle and reuse plastic! After exploring different sensory bottles, the children discovered that some of them rattle, some bubble, some are heavy, some sound like rain and some even have hidden treasures inside! We prepared an activity, where the children worked together to create their very own sensory bottles! It was a great experience that got them using their fine motor skills and exploring with their senses.
24.01.2022 Play dough is a great way for babies to develop their fine motor skills as well as encourage their creativity. While poking, rolling and squishing play dough, children are developing the small muscles in their fingers and hands. Some of our nursery children enjoyed mixing coloured playdough together whilst challenging their fine motor skills by transferring pasta with tongs into the playdough.

22.01.2022 Being outdoors and having the time to explore and engage with nature is a lot of fun, but it is also proven to significantly improve all aspects of a childs development. Each visit to Bush Kindy, we watch our amazing little people become more capable and confident, as they build their self-esteem and nurture their creativity. In the past few weeks, we've spotted kangaroos, a duck family, bats, cockatoos, a pheasant, and butterflies. We've collected water reeds, seed pods, flowers, leaves, interesting rocks, and approximately one million sticks to bring back to our nature table.
22.01.2022 Kindergarten children are notoriously picky eaters and allowing them to take part in preparing their own meal can help get them to open up to new tastes. And the experience of creating a can help build their self-confidence and lay the foundation for healthy eating habits. The Kindergarten children here at Riverhills serve their own meals, and recently they got to make their own hamburgers for lunch. Faced with a smorgasbord of buns, burgers, lettuce, tomato, beetroot and cheese, the children built their burgers before tucking into a very yummy lunch.
21.01.2022 The curious Toddlers have been busy exploring their 5 senses sight, smell, sound, touch and taste. Recently, we have done some taste testing with the children, where they tasted some pantry ingredients. They have now worked their way through sound, as they recognised some animal sounds. Using pictures of animals, and some animal toys, the children listened to sounds playing through a speaker, identified the sound and matched the sound to the correct animal.
21.01.2022 Recognition of numbers supports the development of other number skills, such as counting. The last counting word tells how many. Many children will count three objects, but then, when asked how many, will re-count. But if they recognize groups of one, two, and three, then when they count out one, they see they have one, when they count out two, they see they have two, and when they finish and count three they see three. They relate it to what they already know, and so the counting is more meaningful. Our Kinder children have lots of opportunity to develop this important number skill through their everyday play, with number puzzles, games and through song.
20.01.2022 Through engaging with natural materials, the children get to develop their connection to the world around them while also learning to become socially responsible and show a respect for the environment. This open-ended nature experience encouraged the children to explore the different sights, feels, textures, and even smells, of some of the interesting things they discovered and collected on our weekly walks around the community and parks.
20.01.2022 Playing ball games with Toddlers has many benefits. Not only can you get some fresh air and enjoy the outdoors, but it also promotes hand-eye coordination, balance, timing and fine motor skills! We've recently been spending a bit more time with our Toddlers, practising our throwing, catching, and kicking movements. We have been having a ball!
19.01.2022 Reading stories to children stimulates their imagination and expands their understanding of the world. It teaches babies about communication, and introduces concepts such as numbers, letters, colours and shapes in a fun way. Our nursery babies are so inquisitive and intrigued when it comes to books. They enjoy taking some time to themselves to indulge in a fun story, happily pointing to all the pictures they discover.
19.01.2022 Who doesn’t love solving a challenging puzzle and having that rewarding feeling of accomplishment at the end? In the Nursery, as the babies begin to discover their cognitive, gross and fine motor skills, many things can be seen as a challenging puzzle. This includes running without a tumble, holding a spoon and feeding themselves, and even matching pictures and colours. Using our varieties of stimulating puzzles, our Nursery children are able to explore and expand their ski...lls in a fun and exciting way! Now enrolling for Nursery in 2021. Contact our enrolments team on 3102 1303 to start your journey with us today.

18.01.2022 Recently, our big hearted little people, and their families, got to celebrate the event they had been planning in secret for the past 8 weeks... Miss Jo's baby shower! This party was suggested by the children and they have had a lot of say in exactly what they needed to help make the party successful, including balloons, streamers, cake and presents. We are a little surprised that they managed to keep it a secret from Miss Jo for the whole time, and she certainly was surp...rised to walk in and see the overwhelming pile of gifts and a wonderfully decorated room. This little baby shower was a bittersweet moment, as most of the children will head off to school before Miss Jo returns from her maternity leave. We have plans in place for some Zoom meetings after "our Kindy baby" arrives and the children are eager to see what she looks like. Miss Jo, we wish you all the best for the weeks ahead. You will be missed, but take care and enjoy this precious time. Hope you enjoy your maternity leave! We can't wait to wait to see your sweet little girl.
18.01.2022 While playing in the sandpit can be a bit messy, as the children dig, scoop, pour and sift they're unknowingly developing their muscles and fine motor skills! As they learn to manipulate the sand with their friends, their self help and social skills improve, all while having a blast with a shovel and a bucket.

17.01.2022 Our toddlers have been making the most of this beautiful warm weather and are spending much more time outdoors! They've also been showing an increased interest in the gardens and love to help care for them. We decided to extend on this interest through a group project to create some wall planters for our room! We have been collecting recycled plastic bottles and the toddlers have been hard at work filling them with soil and grass seeds! We are so excited to start building our wall display and to see some beautiful green grass start to grow over the coming weeks!
17.01.2022 Play kitchens encourage little ones to engage with others, enhancing their social development in a fun way. Home Corner is a popular experience in the Nursery room and allows our young children to indulge in the world of imagination while they act out true life experiences. From making tea and coffee, to mixing ingredients in a bowl, the children are not only learning independence with self-help skills, but also developing close bonds with their peers.
16.01.2022 Our Toddler children love their small-world play and using their imaginations to bring animals to life. We have been exploring dinosaurs recently, and thought it would be fun to extend this interest and incorporate it in our weekly park outing. The Toddler Room ventured to the local park to explore, creating habitats for their dinosaurs using the environment and nature around them. Some dinosaurs reached high up trees to eat the fresh green leaves, while other dinosaurs stomped around on the dirt, leaving big dinosaur footprints behind them.
16.01.2022 Loose parts play offers many opportunities for children to explore both processed and natural materials. Loose parts in activities allows them to manipulate materials however they would like, making it about the process of the experience and less about the finished product. Loose parts provide opportunities for children to be creative, curious and imaginative. Fine motor skills are developed and strengthened when children grasp and pick up the small objects. Our toddlers are determined to master tongs and tweezers at the moment and enjoy using them in our loose parts experiences.
16.01.2022 Math includes noticing numbers, shapes, patterns, size, time and measurement. Incorporating math into everyday experiences is easy and fun. Math is everywhere in the playground, at the shops and at home. Developing numeracy skills early gives our Kinder children a foundation for their learning and development. It prepares them not only for the next stages of formal learning but also for daily life. Here at Journey Riverhills our Kinder children are exposed to lots of experiences in making, counting, drawing and talking about numbers through their everyday play.
15.01.2022 Recently we celebrated NAIDOC week. NAIDOC Week is held across Australia each year to celebrate the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. This year ran from the 8th of November to the 15th of November. The week provided a great opportunity for us to learn together and participate in a range of activities and experiences to support our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. The Toddler children engaged in activities... and experiences to support awareness and education of the Indigenous Australian culture. Through these experiences, our children formed a strong interest in learning about the Australian animals. To support and extend this interest we have recently been exploring some of the animals we read about in a book called ‘Koo Koo Kookabrurra’. We have enjoyed learning about some of our wonderful Australian animals together. See more
13.01.2022 Reading books to children stimulates their imagination and expands their understanding of the world. This week we read a fun book called Monster Chef' and planned a few activities to do throughout the week so the children could use their imaginations to bring the book to life! Our favourite activity was mixing up our own ooey gooey meals in the sandpit. The toddlers ran back and forth to the book, gaining inspiration and communicating ideas from the pictures of the story!
12.01.2022 Sunflowers are a symbol of happiness and optimism, they grow a single flower that continually shifts to focus on the light. In our Kindergarten room we encourage our children to shine their light on others, through acts of giving and charity. We are working on a project at the moment that we hope will shine some light on our sister Kindergarten rooms in our Victorian centres, using sunflowers as a symbol of hope and connection. .
12.01.2022 Having a friend who not only makes you feel safe and comfortable, but makes you smile and laugh is so wonderful! The children play, learn, work together and discover with their friends every day, as we support and encourage the social and emotional skills involved in forming friendships. As educators, there's nothing more beautiful to watch than the friendships that we see develop between the children. We love capturing and sharing these wonderful moments between our Toddlers.
11.01.2022 It's your final chance to register for our Wholesome Child Webinar this afternoon, beginning at 1:00pm. Click the following link to register if you haven't already: www.bit.ly/JELWebinarWC
11.01.2022 The subject of Egyptian mummies has come up a few times this year in our Kinder group time. When it does, we discuss that mummification is the way that the ancient Egyptian people buried their family and friends that had died. We talk about the fact that mummies are real, but they don't get up and walk around like in the movies. The mummies topic came up again when we started talking about "spooky" Halloween creatures and we took the opportunity to explore mummies a little further with this fun activity!
10.01.2022 When children explore whole fruits, they are able to squish, crush, taste and crunch before the fruit gets chopped up and served on their plates. As the children spooned out the watermelon half, they slowly developed their fine motor and practical life skills. They also began to notice the juice from the crushed watermelon pooling in the bottom, and used their steady hands and concentration to scoop it to their mouths.
10.01.2022 Children love making noise of any kind, this could be singing songs, making funny sounds with their mouth, and even banging objects together. By making objects collide, children begin to understand what materials make what noises, cracking metal balls together makes a metallic sound, bouncing your spoon up and down on the table makes a loud tap tap tap, making two wooden blocks collide makes a small crack. Children begin to associate this with music and rhythm, while it also stimulates hand eye coordination and critical thinking.
10.01.2022 We had a wonderful morning here at Journey Riverhills on Saturday celebrating our dad's, grandad's, pop's and other father figures, through the magic of play and yummy treats! We hope all our dad's had a restful Father's Day, and we thank you for all your love and support.
10.01.2022 The children have been noticing something following their every step... Its behind them, in front of them and is often walking beside them. Its their shadow! We are currently exploring how shadows are formed and how we can move the shadows by using light and the sun. Yesterday 2 of our Toddler friends sat in the warm morning sun using their imaginations and creativity to make shadow puppets together.
10.01.2022 Theres no hiding that we all have a lot of emotions, and we encourage our Toddlers to express them. We regularly discuss our emotions during group time and this week we have been asking the children how they are feeling each morning, as we believe it's very important that we learn to recognise, acknowledge and find ways to positively express ALL of our emotions and feelings. In the photos below, the children explored images of emotions such as happy, sad, sleepy, angry, surprised and silly and used a mirror to show these feelings through facial expressions.
09.01.2022 Home Corner is a learning area where children can act out true life experiences. We often observe them discussing and recreating meals that they have at home. An interest was sparked last week as some of the children pretended to make ice creams, so we turned our table into an ice cream parlour! The children used coloured and scented shaving foam and pretended it was ice cream! They scooped the ice cream with spoons into cups and cones. A sweet smell of vanilla, chocolate and peppermint filled the room as we used our imagination in the parlour.
09.01.2022 This week, for Naidoc Week, our children have been exploring Indigenous Australian Dreamtime stories! Aboriginal Dreamtime stories are an ideal way to build our knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal Australia. Creation or Dreamtime stories often explain how the country, animals and people came to be as they are. ... These stories have inspired our Kindergarten children to create some amazing art! They've been drawing in sand, painting birds and frogs and even copying the patterns and colours depicted in the stories.
07.01.2022 Our Kindergarten children's favourite book is The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson. They are convinced that The Gruffalo lives in the big storm water drain in our Bush Kindy park and they often hunt around the park for signs of this mysterious creature. Recently the children made Gruffalo Crumble, a favourite of the Gruffalo's protagonist! This cooking adventure helped the Kinder's make a connection between a favourite story and everyday life, while chopping, scooping, measuring and stirring.
07.01.2022 In Kindergarten we often talk about having the courage to try new experiences and recently, we talked about the famous painter Vincent van Gogh, and how he had the courage to keep on painting long after people had told him he was not a good painter. Our children have been studying the paintings of van Gogh closely and have noticed that Vincent van Gogh often painted pictures of wheat fields, and they wondered what wheat was and what it is used for. After discovering that whe...at is used to make flour, and knowing that flour is used for making playdough and bread , the children were eager to make their own bread. They loved the process of mixing the bread mixture, yeast and water together before kneading, poking and pushing the dough. They then watched it rise and grow, and after cooking it they enjoyed eating it for afternoon tea with butter and honey . See more

05.01.2022 Is it a car? Or is it a rocket? It could be a very tall building, or even a robot. The Toddler children are always busy at work with their little hands and creative imaginations. They love exploring the shelves in their construction corner and self-selecting their own recourses from the baskets. As the children choose their own interests and resources from the shelves it gives them a sense of independence and belonging to the room as they begin to make their own choices to support their learning. We are constantly amazed at the wonderful constructions the children create and bring to life.
05.01.2022 Recently, one of our Tuesday morning walks ended with a very special treat! We visited our favourite local coffee shop and the lovely manager at All Things Tasmanian made us all baby chinos! We are so thankful to have such fantastic places in our community for us to create memories! Thank you All Things Tasmanian! I wonder where we will visit next?
05.01.2022 One of the key skills for life that we want to empower our Kindergarten children with is independence, both in their actions and their thinking. Their confidence grows through opportunities to try new things in a safe and supportive environment with lots of positive reinforcement for their success and strategies to support any failures they may have along the way. We have been fostering that independence through encouraging the children to self-serve at their mealtimes recently, this has been met with excitement and a sense of ownership of being able to choose what and how much they want to eat.
04.01.2022 When children practice self-help skills, such as learning how to make juice with oranges, it gives them the chance to improve their fine motor skills. The children gained confidence in their ability to squeeze juice when they moved the orange from side to side, watching the juice fall into the cup. These types of activities build their self-esteem and pride in their independence.
03.01.2022 When we give our children the opportunity explore their curiosity, they expand their vocabulary as they use language to describe what theyre thinking, seeing, hearing, or experiencing. Our children love Bush Kindy, as it gives them the chance to learn about plants and animals, and they're always collecting bits and pieces on our visits to bring back to the centre. We foster their curiosity by making these treasures a feature of our room, setting up areas for further investigation which includes, magnifying glasses, and paper and pencils to record their findings.
03.01.2022 We’ve all heard of therapy dogs visiting children in hospitals and elderly people in aged care, but what about a therapy dog in Kindy? Meet Brittney! Brittney will be visiting the Kindy each Tuesday morning to spend some time interacting with our Kindy children. Brittney is a trained therapy dog who received her accreditation in Canada, and has previously worked in aged care homes and schools there, before moving to Australia with her family. Research shows therapy dogs can ...reduce stress and increase attachment responses that trigger oxytocin a hormone that increases trust in humans. Therapy dogs have been shown to teach empathy and social skills, reduce anxiety in children, be soothing and increase motivation for learning. The children have been eagerly awaiting Brittney's visits and this week the wait was over. Brittney wandered around the room while the children finished up morning tea, before she settled on our group time mat to receive lots of love and attention from some very excited children.
02.01.2022 On behalf of all the educators here at Journey Early Learning Centre Riverhills we say THANK YOU! Our hearts are filled with the beautiful words and well wishes from our very generous families, on this a day when we celebrate all Early Childhood Educators.
01.01.2022 When children practice self help skills, such as feeding themselves, they gain the confidence to try new things and build their self esteem by feeling accomplished after completing a task. Recently our Nursery babies have been practicing washing and peeling mandarins and mashing bananas. It's great to see their progress as they learn how to prepare their own fruit before enjoying the yummy treat.
01.01.2022 A "provocation" is an open ended activity that doesnt have a set outcome. Instead, it is designed to stimulate ideas, initiative and imagination among our Kindergarten children, whether they choose to explore them alone or in a group. Our Kindy children have shown interest in a number of famous paintings by Vincent van Gogh, especially Starry Night, The Sunflowers and Irises. To extend on this interest the children had the opportunity to create their own amazing masterpieces using a bunch of daffodils for inspiration!
