24.01.2022 How good is this?! Olivia came to our River Rug Rats Kid’s Camp which ended yesterday- today she is at home with her pony Chester practising what she learned at camp and building her relationship with her pony Amazing Olivia!! Well done!!

22.01.2022 Reveille’s 2nd day in the pack saddle and we headed out for a 3.5 hour ride. Added the pack bags today (light weight) and a small top canvas (swag was too much effort for me to get out of the shipping container ). On her next few trips she will carry a bit more weight in the bags. Getting the horse accustomed to extra weight, extra straps and extra bulk needs to happen gradually- remember our post from yesterday about vision!

22.01.2022 Rug Rats Mountain Trail is open for booking. A great weekend out for your kids and their horses. Confidence building and heaps of school holiday fun!! Please message us here or email [email protected] for a registration package. Limited places available for 1:1 training and safety on the course. This will be followed by a T Shirt comp day in December.

21.01.2022 There are a couple of places available in this clinic.

20.01.2022 Day 2 out of the yard for Reveille- we love our Guy Fawkes Heritage Horses- intelligent, easy to train, sensible and willing.

19.01.2022 And this is why we love our job so much, when we get messages like this. "Hi Erica, Hope you were able to fly home.... Once again thanks for an amazing clinic, I feel I learnt more in 2 days with you than I did in the years I worked on stations, where I rode/handled horses most days" Thank you very much!!

18.01.2022 Thanks for your feedback guys!! Glad you enjoyed camp!

15.01.2022 Who are we? Erica Jessup- founding member of the Guy Fawkes Heritage Horse Association with over 35 years in the horse industry including leading roles at some of Australia’s most prestigious Thoroughbred studs. Erica has worked with wild horses for many years and is considered a leading authority regarding wild horse management and training. Kate Young- long standing executive member of the Guy Fawkes Heritage Horse Association with 20 years experience in the horse industry ...and several years experience training wild horses. Kate has acquired her Diploma in Horse Industry Management and has achieved a Bachelor of Education/Arts (secondary) with a focus on trauma informed practice and students with behaviour and emotional challenges. Both Erica and Kate draw their methods from numerous horsemen and women from across the globe and, of course, the wild horses they work with. Gaining the trust of a wild horse is achieved through mutual respect, good leadership and reliability. These principles are applied not only to wild horses, but to domestic horses as well. Erica and Kate enjoy the process of training reliable saddle and pack horses who will ride and pack anywhere, anytime. A favourite past time of these two is to make the challenging and steep trek into the, secluded Guy Fawkes River National Park- the most remote section of the Bicentennial National Trail.

04.01.2022 That’s a wrap! Another River Rug Rats Kids Camp done Wow!!!! Blown away with this group of kiddos! Such a polite, happy, fabulous bunch! Good job parentals- your kids are great!! Every single participant made sooo much progress! Some of these kids were non-riders or incredibly nervous before coming to camp- not anymore!! We are SO PROUD of you! Special thanks to all the parents for bringing your kids to our camp and for all of your help xx Super excited for the next Kids Camp!

03.01.2022 Reveille update- she has carried the pack saddle with weight a couple of times now and is good to go trekking New additions are a usual saddle and rider. We find that starting horses as packies before riding really builds their confidence. Good job Reveille

02.01.2022 Pack horse training for Reveille today. She had a few short laps around the paddock with the pack saddle on about 8 months ago and hasn’t seen it since. Today she headed out for a 4 hour ride.Tomorrow we add the pack bags with minimal weight and a swag on top. Pack horse training requires that we have invested a good amount of time developing a trusting partnership and we are sure our groundwork is solid. It also requires that we keep in mind the ocular system of a horse whi...ch allows the horse to see approx 350 degrees- monocular vision (lateral vision where each eye sees independently from the other) and binocular vision (vision straight in front where both eyes focus together. The addition of pack bags and a swag significantly reduces the horses monocular vision- therefore, your horse must be trusting of its handler and educated to a soft feel in the rope. See more

02.01.2022 There are a couple of places left in our Intensive Pack Saddling Clinic. If your keen to see what the go is for packing, or your interested in us helping to get your pack horse started, then this clinic is for you!!
