25.01.2022 Spring has sprung! With the sun, unfortunately comes snakes . Teddy learnt the hard way that snakes do NOT make good friends or play toys... and unfortunately this all happened in his own backyard.... Teddy collapsed, lost consciousness and stopped breathing as his body could no longer support itself due to the effects of the snake venom. He was put on a mechanical ventilator to breathe for him along with not 1... not 2... but 4 vials of antivenin in total! Once stabilized from his very rapid decline, Teddy received intensive care and round the clock monitoring for the next 24 hours until he was able to breathe without the ventilator, stand up and toilet by himself! When Teddy started to regain consciousness and hear our vets and nurses encouraging voices, he started to wag his tail! His very first movement after the collapse! (Check out the comments ) Teddys family thankfully have pet insurance and this saved his life. In these high stress situations, his family could do anything and everything in order to give Teddy the best chance possible. Teddy is such a fighter and is now able return to his very loving family! Is your family prepared for a snake bite? Stayed tuned for our next post on what to do if you think your pet has been bitten by a snake!

24.01.2022 Sadly last week was Dr. Georgie's last week with us at the Riverland Veterinary Practice. We have been lucky to have her as part of our team for the last 2 years Dr. Georgie has been our main Waikerie Vet for the last year due to covid restrictions and has became a very important part of the local community ... Dr. Georgie will continue working as a Veterinarian in both New South Wales and South Australia with her focus now being on Cattle. We know our clients and patients will miss her just as much as we will. Thank you Dr. Georgie for your hard work, dedication and commitment over the last 2 years and we wish you all the best Love the RVP Team

22.01.2022 OUR DOORS ARE OPEN We are so thankful and appreciative to all our clients for how understanding you have all been during the last week. We are almost back to normal but there are still some rules to follow:... - Social distance of 1.5 metres is still in place, therefore we ask that you please use the marked tape on the floor. - Our doors are open, but we ask that only one person per patient comes into the clinic. - Call first, please do not arrive unannounced so that we can ensure we are following the current restrictions. - On arrival to reception, we will provide hand sanitizer please use this when entering and exiting the building. We look forward seeing you in the clinic and thank you in advance for your patience and understanding.

22.01.2022 COVID-19 Update!! The Minister for Agriculture has announced that Veterinarians have now been officially classified as an essential service. This means that should we all be forced into further restrictions veterinary clinics will legally be allowed to stay open and provide emergency veterinary care. ... As an extra precaution as of today our entire staff have been split into 3 teams. These teams will be working at different clinics and having no contact with each other either at work or outside of work. We are taking this step so that should any staff member contract COVID-19 we can isolate that team of our workforce for the mandatory periods but still remain open with the other 2 teams. Hopefully, we will not have to do this but it removes the risk of the Hospital having to close. It means that it may be a little harder to see your veterinarian of choice however please ask the staff when you call and we can try our best to organise your appointment at the clinic your preferred vet is working at if you would like. Importantly we are OPEN for business and happy to see you and your pets. Thank you for your understanding The Riverland Veterinary Team

10.01.2022 URGENT!!! YOUR DOG COULD SAVE A LIFE!! We are currently looking for more Canine blood donors for our blood donor program... What is the process? All potential donors will have initial blood test to ensure they have no underlying health issues followed by a full physical examination at no cost. The test is reviewed and if approved by our veterinarian, your dog can donate blood. It takes approximately 30 - 60 minutes to donate thats why its important your dog has a calm temperament. Sometimes to reduce stress a light sedation maybe needed. Donors are then laid down on their side on a comfy bed with nurses talking to and cuddling them. At the same time the blood donation nurse will clip some hair under their neck and aseptically prepare the area for collection. All dogs receive a yummy high energy meal and a drink straight after their donation What do you do with the blood my pet donates? All the blood collected at the Riverland Veterinary Hospital is used in house on patients suffering from traumas such as being hit by a car to common medical diseases like anemia. Once collected blood can only be stored for 30 days so if we dont see a patient in that time that requires a blood transfusion, the blood is disposed of, this is why we need a large number of dogs in our donor program to ensure we always have a supply on hand. Our way of saying thank you! Donating your furry family members blood is a lifesaving gift to the patients who desperately need it and in appreciation we will make a $50 contribution towards future pet care that your pets may need. This is recorded as a credit on your account. Ideal Donor Criteria 25kg + 1-8 years old Fully vaccinated Regularly wormed Never received a blood transfusion Known history of good health Calm temperament Must be able to Travel to the Berri Vet Hospital for donations Your dog is available to donate up to four times a year If you would like your dog to be a hero too, please call the Riverland Veterinary Hospital on 08 8582 1222. 07.01.2022 Can we get any cuter? Littermates Myla and Boss had an impromptu catch up at the clinic when they came in for their final puppy vaccinations Did you know we give the last C5 puppy vaccination at 16 weeks as we have such a high rate of Parvovirus in our region? This is to align with the puppys immune systems becoming fully competent by this age. Our favourite thing to do is keep your fur babies safe from preventable viruses #rvpvet

04.01.2022 There is no doubt about how hard these recent times have been! Not only for our owners, but our furry companions as well. We would like to take the time to let you all know how much we appreciate your trust and patience in allowing us to look after your beloved fur babies with limited contact/communication. We appreciate your understanding and willingness to move your appointment so that we can see the neighbours dog that has been hit by a car, or your sisters cat that is... unable to urinate, or your friends horse that has sliced their leg on a fence. We are an accredited emergency hospital that prides ourselves on being able to see your pet when it needs us the most, whether it is day or night. Believe it or not, we could be stacking shelves for the same amount of pay, instead we deal with life and death situations, dont get meal breaks, and sometimes dont get toilet breaks! We work through the night and miss spending time with our own families whilst making sure your animal is looked after in its time of need. Mental health is very important to our clinic in being able to perform our tasks to the expected standard. Unfortunately, these times have proven to be quite difficult for all of our staff to manage the high demands placed on them. So please be patient and forgiving when we ask to move your appointment, or cannot book an appointment the day you phone. We would again like to thank everyone who has brought in their pets to be seen and for the continued support through this awful time of uncertainty. Riverland Veterinary Practice Team.

04.01.2022 Our priority is to continue to provide high standards of veterinary care for your pets, during these difficult times. We've responded to the needs and requests of our community and have now implemented minimal-contact pet care across all our Veterinary Practices to ensure the health and safety of our clients, patients and our staff. Simply call us upon arrival at the Practice and we'll collect your pet from your car and keep you updated over the phone.... If you need to pick up food or medications we ask that you call ahead to order and pay via phone. When you arrive at the clinic please call from the car and we will bring the items out to you. Thank you for your support The Riverland Veterinary Team

04.01.2022 This is Charlie! He is a lovely golden retriever who recently spent a fair bit of time with us here at the Riverland Veterinary Hospital. This gorgeous boy had a taste for towel and decided that eating a bath mat was going to be a delicious treat. Unfortunately for him, if not chewed well, towels do not tend to digest nicely. So Charlie ended up with a linear foreign body! Which means that instead of a blockage in one place in the intestine, there was a blockage though a ...considerable length of the small intestine caused by a long string from the towel being pushed through the gut while the majority of the towel was anchored in the stomach. We performed surgery to remove the bulk of the towel and cut up the string in a few places to allow it to pass through. Sometimes despite our best efforts there are complications associated with big abdominal surgeries, and Charlie ended up with a septic peritonitis because his small intestine was so unhappy it started leaking into his belly. So he came back in for a repeat surgery to remove some small intestine that had decided not to heal, was put on intravenous antibiotics and had an abdominal drain placed to remove fluid from his belly. Since that little hiccup and the extended stay with us, he's healed up wonderfully and is back at home with his beloved family with a strict promise to keep out of trouble. Health insurance for your pets is an absolute life saver for these big visits. Charlie's family could've never guessed what sort of mischief he could get himself into but by having pet insurance were able to comfortably ensure that he was going to get all the care he needed. The take home message of this story is to remember to chew your food, insure your pets, and no matter how tasty it looks - don't eat the bath mat! #rvpvet

03.01.2022 Met Mel the Koala Mel came to us a couple of weeks ago in a very bad way. He was hypothermic, had low blood sugar and had significant injuries to his hands. A dislocation of the claw on one hand and skin abrasions on the other. With a lot of love and koalaty care, Mel has made a tremendous recovery and is in the capable hands of his koalaified careers #rvpvet @ Riverland Veterinary Hospital

03.01.2022 *** SECOND PHOTO VOMIT WARNING *** Little Russell managed to get into some rat bait but luckily his owners were super vigilant and brought him down within the hour for us to make him vomit Rat bait is an anticoagulant which means it can result in some life threatening clotting issues in the days that follow ingestion. Sometimes it can be anywhere between 2-21 days after eating the bait before they show signs of being affected. Whether it is spontaneous bleeding externa...lly or lethargy from bleeding internally Russell will be getting his clotting times checked 48 hours later to see if he will need any additional medication. But in the meantime he's back to his bright and bubbly self (despite how he seems in this photo), and looking for his next meal #rvpvet #raitbait #poisonings
