16.01.2022 When going to vote, generally just before you get through the doors you inevitably encounter the sea of different party representatives, all in different coloured shirts trying to hand you a voting card on how to order your preferences to align yourself with their party. The different people, the different colours, the different order of preferences, at some level it all speaks to the irony that on a day the entire country is unified in going to the polls, disunity can also c...ome in that we don’t all vote the same and disconnection arises out of disagreement. Unfortunately, at times unity in the Church can be reflective of popular culture in this sense. We gather around agreement instead of love and our preference instead of His presence. The problem is that if our unity is dependent on our agreement, then our disagreement fuels division. But, if our unity is dependent on our love for one another, then disagreement doesn’t compromise our unity - it actually presents an opportunity to choose love and build it. There is an attempt in this cultural moment to make our unity politically focussed instead of Jesus focussed. Biblically we know that there is a blessing that comes in unity and in Ephesians Paul talks about ‘doing the work of keeping the unity.’ The implication here is that unity already exists in the Church because Christ is the head of the Church. Paul also talks about one spirit, one baptism and our confession unifying us as one body. Our job, therefore, isn’t to create unity - Jesus has done that. Our job is to work to keep unity. The other implication here is that unity doesn’t and won’t just happen. There will be things that happen which could create disunity. In the face of these, we are called to go to work. Biblical unity runs deeper than agreement, or at least it’s supposed to. Our unity can’t be dependent on our preference for how things are done, sound or look. Our unity isn’t dependent on what we align ourselves to - it’s dependent on the One we align ourselves with. If we are truly one body, aligned with Jesus, we can never become all that we’re meant to be while we gossip about, dishonour and undervalue other parts based on something as surface level as personal preference. There is a responsibility we have even in our disagreement, our pain and even in the ways, we have been dishonoured to do the work of keeping unity. This doesn’t excuse that someone else’s behaviour itself maybe wasn’t inline with keeping the unity and there are biblical ways to address that. Ultimately though, we can’t control how other people behave but we can control how we behave and how we respond. Our unity is supposed to inform our disagreement instead of our disagreement informing our unity. Unity then is more a matter of learning to disagree well rather than straining to agree on everything. How have you learnt to disagree well? Comment below ,
