25.01.2022 Murray River National Park looking spectacular! What a great place to get away from it all and connect with nature

23.01.2022 Follow in the footsteps of Colin Thiele’s Storm Boy and Mr Percival by finding out more about the wonders of Coorong National Park - the National Parks and Wildlife Service South Australia’s Park of the Month for November. Coorong National Park protects a vast wetland of international importance and the fragile dune systems of the Younghusband Peninsula. It’s where Australia’s largest river system, the Murray-Darling, flows out to the Southern Ocean and is home to more than 200 species of birds, as well as many migratory birds that arrive each summer. https://www.environment.sa.gov.au//11/coorong_national_park

23.01.2022 Habitats for threatened species are being restored in the Coorong, and the #OurCoorongOurCoast team hope to see an increase in native birds returning to the area #ProjectCoorong

21.01.2022 Unique ecosystems along the River Murray provide habitat for native fish, frogs, turtles, water birds and mammals.

21.01.2022 It’s been a few weeks now since Larry passed Lock 11 and we haven’t detected any lamprey movement at upstream sites past this point. There’s quite a distance from Lock 11 (Mildura) to Lock 15 (Euston the location of the next upstream PIT reader). so we’re not sure if Larry is still traversing the 232km part of this trip or if he’s found suitable spawning grounds in this river reach. Shorty has now passed Lock 2.... https://www.environment.sa.gov.au//where-is-larry-the-lamp

13.01.2022 Last week members of the Katarapko Community Advisory Panel and staff from DEW took a trip out to the Katarapko floodplain to see how the first environmental watering event is progressing. The tour kicked off by visiting Migga’s Quarry which is a great spot to lookout over the lower part of the floodplain that is currently inundated. It provided a great understanding of how far the water has expanded on the floodplain, and the response the watering has had on the birdlife an...d animals in the area. The members then visited Carparks Lagoon regulator, highlighting the extent of the watering into the Carparks Lagoon Wetland which was initially out of scope for this event, but due to the inflow the water managed to reach this wetland which was exciting to see. The tour continued on to the primary regulator at the Splash - a key structure that plays a huge part in the watering event, allowing water flow through the Katarapko system. The group then visited other structures at Piggy Creek and were able to see water on both sides of the blocking bank and within the wetland.

13.01.2022 November through to December is the time of year that both Murray short-necked turtles and eastern long-necked turtles venture outside the safety of the water to nest and lay eggs. It’s during this time that predation by foxes on eggs and road fatalities of females out looking for nesting sites are a huge threat to both species. https://landscape.sa.gov.au//201102-november-an-important-

12.01.2022 Record numbers of rare lamprey are migrating from the ocean up to 2000 km along the River Murray to breed and you can follow their journey! Check out where in the MDB is Larry the Lamprey?! https://bit.ly/2RPJeFl

11.01.2022 The short-headed lamprey that we had detected to Lock 2 in Iate October got busy and passed through both Lock 3 (10/11) and Lock 4 (16/11). No pouched lamprey migration has been detected for the last few weeks. https://www.environment.sa.gov.au//where-is-larry-the-lamp

07.01.2022 People living around the Lower lakes may notice higher water levels over the next few weeks as part of a spring watering event designed to deliver maximum environmental benefits. A coordinated southern spring flow is making its way down the River Murray to the Lower Lakes and Coorong which is expected to generate the higher water levels. The spring flow will peak at around 18,000 megalitres a day (ML/d) at the South Australian border in late November, and make its way to the... 05.01.2022 Today is National Threatened Species Day and to mark the importance of protecting our state’s plants and animals, we’re turning the spotlight on five species that live in one of South Australia’s most iconic wetlands.

05.01.2022 Every year, Professor Richard Kingsford and Dr John Porter from the University of NSW's Centre for Ecosystem Science have the enviable task of flying over a third of the country, studying and counting the waterbird population. The annual aerial survey provides one of the few quantitative, large-scale biodiversity datasets that can monitor changes in the distribution and abundance of 50 waterbird species, including threatened species, as well as the health of rivers and wetla...nds. The survey is a powerful tool to observe changes in Ramsar wetland condition as well as other global and international conservation agreements. Their work has played a big part in contributing to the development of the Murray Darling Basin Plan. Day 12 of the survey took in the South Australian leg of the river from Renmark to Goolwa and you can see Richard’s observations here: https://www.ecosystem.unsw.edu.au/logs/day-12-renmark-goolwa
