24.01.2022 4Osteopathic Principle 4: Rational Treatment Approach The fourth and final Osteopathic Principle focuses on that rational treatment is based upon an understanding of the first three principles. This means that treatment will be based on understanding that; the body is a unit, the body has the ability to self-regulate and self heal, understand the relationship between structure and function and that they are interrelated, and use all this information to provide appropriate ...treatment. An Osteopath will differ depending on how they think about the individual’s body state of health and disease. #osteopathy #osteopath #holistichealth #alliedhealth #osteopathicprinciples #rationaltreatment #corowa #corowansw

22.01.2022 3Osteopathic Principle 3: Structure and function are reciprocally interrelated The third Osteopathic Principle focuses on the fact that structure and function are interrelated. This means that changes in the musculoskeletal system reflect and can produce changes in other systems of the body. The musculoskeletal system comprises up to 60% of the human body’s total body’s mass. This system consists of bones, muscles, ligaments and connective tissues. ... Doctor A.T. Still, believed that the role of the musculoskeletal system played an important role in one's overall health and disease state. Doctor Still studied and experimented, and was able to link changes in the musculoskeletal system with signs and symptoms of known diseases of other body systems. He was able to use his principles and osteopathic techniques to remove the abnormal musculoskeletal changes, and therefore saw a change in the disease state. These findings led Dr Still to believe that disease is caused by the body's dysfunctions, not the other way around. This approach to treatment means that Osteopaths are able to palpate the tissues of the body and understand that there may be multi structures that could be affected, including organs. #osteopathy #osteopath #holistichealth #alliedhealth #osteopathicprinciples #structureandfunction #corowa #corowansw

17.01.2022 1Osteopathic Principle 1. The Body is a Unit This Osteopathic principle The body is a unit understands that the human body is a multi-system organism, that at no point does anything within the human body work independently. There is constant integration and regulation of each of the body’s systems and they overlap. One part of the body may directly or indirectly affect other parts of the body and therefore the body is viewed as a whole. As an example: someone can have ...an accident and break a bone. This broken bone does not only affect the bone (skeletal system), but affects the muscles surrounding the bone (muscular system), and the blood flow and lymphatic drainage to and from the area affected (circulatory & lymphatic systems). Doctor A.T. Still (the Founder or Osteopathy) believed that diseases that affected the digestive system of the body would also affect the musculoskeletal system and vice versa. This was the basis of the concept of a holistic approach to patient care. This approach even extended to include holism of the body, mind and spirit. So from an Osteopathic view, we need to look at how one problem affects the person as a whole. Look at what other systems may be working hard or be affected by this one problem, including mind and spirit (physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, psychological, environmental, and others). #osteopathy #osteopath #holistichealth #alliedhealth #osteopathicprinciple #ATStill #corowa #corowansw
15.01.2022 Friday Facts! Did you know that the brain can't feel pain The brain has no pain receptors... The pain receptors are actually located in the tissues surrounding the brain. These tissues include the meninges (tissue surrounding the brain), the periosteum (connective tissue surround the skull) and the scalp. So when someone has brain surgery, technically there is no pain!! #FridayFacts #osteopathy #alliedhealth #brain #pain #corowa #corowansw

11.01.2022 2Osteopathic Principle 2: The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing and health maintenance The second Osteopathic Principle focuses on the body and it’s own capability to regulate and maintain its own health. This includes the ability to self heal to maintain homeostasis within the body. Doctor A.T. Still believed that an Osteopath’s job is to support and guide the body to utilise its own ability to self heal and overcome illness to return to a healthy state. ...It is understood that the body is not in either a healthy or ill state, but in a constant balancing act in response to both internal and external environmental stressors. If the body is successful at balancing the stressors, the body will be in a state of health, but if there are too many stressors that overwhelm the body then the body can go into a diseased or ill state. So, from an Osteopathic view, we need to understand that the body is complex and there are always multiple body systems in play. Being able to support and assist the body so that it doesn’t succumb to the excessive stressors on it. This will allow the body's systems in play to negate the internal and external stressors, and bring the body back into a healthy state. #osteopathy #osteopath #holistichealth #alliedhealth #osteopathicprinciple #ATStill #selfhealing #selfregulation #healthmaintenance #corowa #corowansw
