What we want: All parties to demonstrate their support for the wildlife and the communities of the Channel Country by committing to implementing stronger legislative protections for the rivers and floodplains of the Channel Country within the first 12 months of a newly elected government.
17.01.2022 Helen Commens is from Ourdel Station in the Channel Country. This photo illustrates her deep appreciation for the life-giving water that arrives with a flood and transforms the arid landscape into a booming green oasis that sustains nature and people in the heart of the Outback. . The spectacular flooding events that can be witnessed in the Channel Country are created by natural, free-flowing desert rivers- among the last intact great desert river systems found on earth. ..."You can drive through Windorah and the Barcoo Shire and lots of places out here and think it's really hard country. It's not until you see from the aerial perspective how amazing the country is. It just shows how amazing nature is that those seeds can be down huge cracks in the dry times and then that floodwater will come." Helen Commens Our warm congratulations to Helen Commens for taking this spectacular image of the Channel Country near Windorah. It has been selected for the Bureau of Meteorology Wild Weather Calendar for 2021. https://www.abc.net.au//bureau-of-meteorology-cal/12846740
16.01.2022 Weeds such as prickly acacia can infest waterways and threaten vital wildlife habitat across the Channel Country. Barcaldine Regional Council is working with Desert Channel Queensland to develop a 'Good Neighbour Program' that aims to work with landholders to stop the spread of problem weeds from one property to the next. We want to take this opportunity to thank all of the land managers working hard to protect our beautiful Outback landscapes!
13.01.2022 ABC Brisbane Radio Drive Angus Emmott is a grazier and environmentalist from the Channel Country. He feels passionate about protecting the country he loves. On ABC 612 Drive with Steve Austin recently, he voiced his concerns about threats to the health of the rivers and floodplains of the Channel Country. His concerns centre on the impacts of industrial scale unconventional gas activities on the ground water in the Great Artesian Basin.... The reality is that inland eastern Australia is sitting on top of the Great Artesian Basin, the largest aquifer in the world...when gas well shafts degrade, the aquifer waters mix and the water becomes contaminated. Without clean water in the Great Artesian Basin aquifer... the whole of inland Eastern Australia would be closed for business- industry, food production, tourism the lot. 11.01.2022 The Bureau of Meteorology shared this photo of the Channel Country coming to life after rain. When the area gets enough rainfall, the Channel Country comes to life from dry desert channels to flowing waterways. The channels begin to fill as water flows downstream from over 700km away, making their way to towns like Windorah and Birdsville. : Helen Commens captured this spectacular photo of floodwaters as they moved through Ourdel Station, Windorah in Southwest Queensland... back in 2008. Find out more about the last big flood in this region on the Bureau's blog: http://ow.ly/YOFA50BG4z7
08.01.2022 We haven't stopped fighting for the rivers and floodplains of the Channel Country, but unfortunately the Palaszczuk Government still hasn’t delivered on its 2017 election commitment to review damaging changes to river protection laws made by the Newman Government in 2014. We need to see all parties show their support for the wildlife and the communities of the Channel Country by committing to implement stronger legislative protections for the rivers and floodplains within the... first 12 months of a newly elected government. Add your voice to the call here: www.westernrivers.org.au/ PS. We're nonpartisan - protecting some of the last free flowing desert rivers on Earth is something every side of politics should be doing.
08.01.2022 Thanks OBE Organic for asking- What does #reconciliation mean to you? #reconciliation is a chance to find a way for Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians to come together to celebrate not only Indigenous achievement but the history, rich culture, and survival of the oldest continuing living culture on the planet. #NAIDOCWeek2020

03.01.2022 "We don't want it fracked, pumped, dried out or dammed."
