14.01.2022 On this day, 99 years ago, something truly miraculous happened. 14-year-old Leonard Thompson lay dying in a Canadian hospital with diabetes. He was one of man...y patients comatose in a ward surrounded by grieving family. Then one by one, scientists Frederick Banting, Charles Best and James B Collip went from bed to bed, injecting an entire ward with the new purified extract of insulin. Before they reached the last dying child, the first few were awakening from their coma. To this day, insulin remains a medical miracle that has saved millions of people. Up until the breakthrough, Type 1 diabetes was considered a death sentence. Join us over the next twelve months as we celebrate all the milestones in the lead up to the 100th anniversary of the discovery of insulin.
