16.01.2022 The scientists started by mixing the wastewater with cypress sawdust, which is another waste product thats common in the Mediterranean, where 97 percent of the... worlds olive oil is produced. That mixture was rapidly dried, and the water was collected as it evaporated that water was clean, and could be used to irrigate crops. The remaining dried material was then subjected to pyrolysis, which is a process wherein organic material is exposed to high temperatures in the absence of oxygen. This caused it to decompose into combustible gas and charcoal pellets. That gas was collected and condensed into bio-oil, which could ultimately be used as a heat source for the drying and pyrolysis processes. The charcoal, meanwhile which contains high amounts of nutrients such as potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen was gathered and used as a crop fertilizer. In field tests, it was found that the pellets "significantly improved plant growth."

12.01.2022 Media Release 16/10/17 Tasmanias late olive harvest brings results The Australian International Olive Awards were presented at the Annual Australian ...Olive Association(AOA) Conference Presentation Dinner at the Adelaide Convention Centre on Tuesday 10th October 2017. After a late harvest, Tasmanian olive producers once again walked away with many medals, highlighting the quality of Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) being produced in Tasmania. Chief Steward Trudie Michels described this years event as a very successful show indeed, with medals awarded to 87% of the 222 oils, a record number of entrants for the 21 years of the Australian competition. The judges gave 49 gold, 85 silver and 60 bronze medals to well-deserving olive producers, in what they deemed an outstanding year in terms of quality. Tamanian olive producers were awarded a total of 20 medals, including 3 gold, 8 silver & 9 bronze. For the first time, this years competition gained international status, welcoming extra virgin olive oil, flavoured oils and table olive entries from both northern and southern hemisphere producers. Best in State award for Tasmania EVOO was won by The Village Olive Grove, winning a Gold medal in the Medium class. Other Gold medal winners were Cradle Coast Olives & Lentara Grove. Cradle Coast Olives won a Gold medal in the Medium class for their Frantoio variety, whilst Lentara Grove received a Gold medal for their citrus flavoured oil. Tasmanian EVOO continues to thrive in the Tasmanian cool climate and Tasmanian consumers should keep their eyes open for this seasons fresh produce. 02.01.2022 THE BIG DRY. When I took this photo on the 15th of July on our dusty & parched farm in South West NSW, the dam in the background, one of five on our property, w...as down to 30% capacity, and we had already (two months prior) sold the majority of our 120 head herd of Black Angus cattle, save for 8 cows and one bull. Our horse, Maddy, was looking thin and hungry, and when we came over to feed him chaff and a bag of carrots, all of our remaining cattle quickly followed him up to the fence in the desperate hope to also get a feed. Since July, two of our five dams have dried up completely, and the last three are at 20% capacity or less. That means that irrigation for our olive trees is now out of the question. Our trees will survive, as they are highly resilient & can deal with the dry better than many plants, although next years crop of olives will likely be affected. But they will survive. That puts us in a better position than many other farmers & growers across NSW & QLD at the moment, who are in complete devastation as they watch their crops fail and their animals die due to starvation. If you care about your food then spare a thought, shop at farmers markets, donate to @ruralaid & @buyabale, buy locally produced, and pay a fair, and sustainable price for the food that you eat. Now and always. In good times and bad. Its not a lot to ask and it will make a difference. See more
