19.01.2022 This is beautiful Mila, she is a 10 year old Shih Tzu X Maltese. Mila recently came in to see us as she was having a lot of "accidents" in the house. Upon examination, Dr Mona could feel something hard in her bladder, so proceeded to take x-rays which confirmed a bladder full of stones! Surgery was performed and all of the stones were successfully removed. Mila has recovered well and is now feeling a lot better!

18.01.2022 **THE FLYING KITTEN - AN AMAZING SURVIVAL!** This week we have seen a very young kitten, only a couple of weeks old, survive a remarkable ordeal- being picked up by a crow, flown through the sky and dropped from a significant height, then continue to be pecked and attacked by the crow until it was rescued and brought into us for treatment. The kittens rescuers have provided us with CCTV footage that shows the events unfold. About 7 seconds into the footage you can see somet...hing white drop from the sky, this is the kitten. The crow then attacks it for about 2 minutes until the rescuers come home and find the kitten. It is extremely lucky they came home when they did, otherwise the kitten would have unlikely survived. Upon examination at our hospital, the kitten remarkably had no major injuries. The kitten will remain in our care and be bottle fed until it is old enough to be adopted. We have no idea where the crow picked the kitten up from. This story serves as a timely reminder to be mindful that we are now in breeding season where birds such as magpies and crows can become very aggressive, please be careful!

13.01.2022 *COVID-19 UPDATE* Dear valued clients, We are sure all of you are following the unfolding coronavirus situation here in Australia. At our hospital we have implemented additional measures to do our best to avoid the spread of infection. We are performing more frequent, more rigorous cleaning and disinfection of surfaces using products known to kill coronavirus. Our staff are regularly washing and sanitising their hands. We are minimising all non-essential visits by third parti...es to our hospital. We all need to do our part to limit the impact of this pandemic in the community. In order for our hospital to remain open to treat your beloved pets, we must keep all of our staff healthy and free from infection. For this reason, we respectfully and kindly ask you to follow the following: If you are feeling unwell and/or showing any flu-like symptoms, particularly a cough or sore throat, or you have potentially been exposed to some who is, then please, we ask that you do not visit our hospital. If your pet needs veterinary attention, please ask someone else to bring them in. If this is not possible, please phone us and we can help organise for you or someone else to drop your pet off to us (we can collect them from the carpark). We will always be happy to phone you to discuss your pets problem once we have them here at the hospital. Also, in line with the governments recently imposed compulsory 14 day self-isolation period for all travellers entering Australia, if you have returned to Australia from overseas within the last 14 days, or have someone at home who is in self-isolation due to travel, we ask that you do not visit our hospital. Again, please ask someone else to bring your pet in, or if this is not possible, please contact us for further advice and assistance. When visiting our hospital, please minimise the number of family members coming with you, even if they are healthy. Please use the hand sanitiser that we have available at reception. Please try and remain a safe distance from other people and avoid direct contact. If possible please settle any bills using EFTPOS rather than using cash. It is also important to remember that at this point in time there is no evidence of human to animal transmission or vice versa. We thank you all for your support with these measures and we hope you all remain safe and well.

12.01.2022 We are open again tomorrow Tues 29th Dec from 7:30am. Please remember you can book an appointment for your pet online 24/7! Just visit our website or click the "Book Now" button at the top of our Facebook page. https://rivertonvet.com.au/book-online

11.01.2022 UPDATE: Our power is back on now :) **WE ARE OPEN AND OPERATING AS NORMAL** As you might be aware, there are currently still power outages around Riverton. We, however, have a power generator and are are still open and able to treat patients as usual. We just please ask for your patience if you call or come in, as we currently have limited phone lines and computers, so things might take a little longer than usual. Hopefully power will be restored soon! Thank you for your understanding.

11.01.2022 Meet Mandy, the cheeky Labrador who ate 2 whole socks! Mandy came to see us this week as she had been vomiting and her owner knew she had eaten 2 socks 10 days earlier. Dr Jon was very concerned that the socks could be stuck somewhere in Mandys gastrointestinal tract and she would require surgery to remove them. However he first gave Mandy some medication to induce a full vomit to empty the stomach and luckily both socks came up! An excellent outcome for Mandy!

09.01.2022 Tina is a very young and small kitten that was surrendered to us as she had a broken leg. She had broken her tibia (the shin bone between the knee and the ankle) some time ago and it had healed at an abnormal angle, causing the leg to be bent and useless. Dr Jon performed a tricky operation on Tina which involved re-breaking the healing tibial fracture, straightening it back up to a normal angle, and then putting it back together with an internal pin through the length of the... bone as well as an external pin and frame called an external fixateur. Tina tolerated her leg hardware very well, in fact we had quite a job keeping her resting in her cage during her recovery (we often caught her climbing the cage door and doing somersaults!) After a period four weeks, Tina had more x-rays taken which showed the bone had healed well, so all the metal pins were removed. Tina was a real little trooper during her stay with us and we all grew very fond of her. We wish her well with her new family and hope she keeps out of trouble!

07.01.2022 **COVID-19 UPDATE** Dear valued clients, We hope you are all keeping well and safe during this challenging time for everyone. We received some reassuring news from the government that vets have been deemed an essential service. This means that in the event of a bigger shutdown in the coming weeks, your pets veterinary care should not be completely disrupted.... In order to keep everyone safe in the community when visiting our vet hospital, we have put in place further changes to limit close contact between yourselves (our clients) and all of our staff. Until further notice, clients and visitors to our hospital will not be able to enter the building and we will now be keeping the door locked, even though we are still open. Please either press the bell at the front door, or phone our usual number 9457 3409 (from you car is fine) and we will come out and greet you. If your visit is to collect food or medication, we will bring this out to your car. If you are visiting with your pet for a consultation or admission, we will collect your pet and take it inside for examination and/or treatment. We will always ensure that your pets stress is kept to a minimum and we will treat them as if they were our own. During this time, we kindly ask you to wait in the carpark and we will call you to ask questions and discuss plans and outcomes. Payments can easily be made by EFTPOS as our staff can bring the machine outside. We understand that this process may seem inefficient and cause frustrations and this is the last thing we would normally wish to do. However, we are living in extraordinary times and if we all do our bit, hopefully we will get through this as quickly as possible. Also, as discussed previously, if you are feeling unwell, have recently come back from overseas or have been in contact with someone who is unwell, do not visit the hospital. Please phone us and we will formulate a plan to help you and your pet whilst keeping everybody safe. Again take care and look after each other. Kind regards, Dr Jonathan J Spanoghe BVMS MANZCVS Principal Veterinarian

02.01.2022 Bee sting alert! This week we had two lovely patients presented to us with bee stings, both showing quite different clinical signs. Luna came in with a very swollen face and hives, but was otherwise feeling quite normal and happy. On the other hand, Molly didnt have any swelling or hives, but was feeling very under the weather and hiding away from her owners. Molly had also been licking her paw, vomiting and had loose stools. A bee stinger was found in both dogs. Both dogs were treated with antihistamines and anti-inflammatories and recovered well.

02.01.2022 Meet Leo! Leo recently came to see us as he was vomiting and not interested in his food. Upon examination, Dr Mona could feel something firm in his abdomen, so an ultrasound was performed which confirmed a 1cm foreign body in his small intestine. Leo was immediately taken to surgery and the foreign body was successfully removed. The foreign body appeared to be part of a collectable sticky toy that is very popular at the moment! Leo recovered well from surgery and is now feeling much better.
