25.01.2022 Feeling a little ‘teary’, anxious or irritable for a few days in the weeks after the birth often referred to as the ‘baby blues’ is common, however, when a low mood or feelings of anxiousness start to cause concerns or stop an expecting or new parent from functioning normally for more than two weeks, they may be experiencing perinatal anxiety or depression. Up to one in five expecting or new mothers and one in ten expecting or new fathers will experience perinatal anxiety... or depression. The illness affects around 100,000 families across Australia every year. Left untreated, it can have a devastating impact on parents, partners, baby and the rest of the family. In the worst cases, lives can even be put at risk. Speak to your GP for a check-in. Alternatively, Panda National run programmes supporting women, men and families with perinatal anxiety and depression. They have a national helpline 1300 726 306 from Mon-Sat 9am-7pm offering support, information and counselling.

22.01.2022 Nov 14 is World Diabetes Day. Diabetes is a complex and serious condition that requires careful day-to-day management. This can be overwhelming, especially for those newly diagnosed. It is the fourth largest contributor to overall disease burden in Australia. This year, the World Diabetes Day 2020 campaign focuses on promoting the role of nurses in the prevention and management of diabetes. From the GP Practice, Emergency Department to the community setting, nurses play a ke...y role in: -The recognition of diabetes to ensure prompt treatment. -Providing self-management education and psychological support for people living with diabetes with the aim of preventing complications. -Raising awareness of the risk factors for type 2 diabetes and providing education and support to help prevent the condition. Speak to our practice nurse if you are worried about symptoms and signs of diabetes, or if you had any questions about diabetes.

21.01.2022 Stroke is one of Australia’s biggest killers and a leading cause of disability however more than 80% of strokes can be prevented! The cause of stroke is when the blood supply to part of the brain is suddenly cut off. Blood contains oxygen and important nutrients for proper functioning, so if brain cells do not get enough of this supply, they become stressed and die. Early treatment for stroke is critical act F.A.S.T- the longer a stroke remains untreated, the greater the chance that stressed brain cells will die, leaving behind permanent stroke-related brain damage. Chronic medical diseases such as hypertension and diabetes are known risk factors and should be meeting treatment targets. You can ensure this by visiting your GP regularly.

21.01.2022 Many Australians will remember the Sid the Seagull campaign in the 1980's which launched the 'Slip, Slop, Slap' message. Some things have changed since then but our sun is still the same. A lot of those Australians who first heard Sid’s message now have kids of their own. National Skin Cancer Action Week is the perfect opportunity to remind them of the importance of staying SunSmart, not just for themselves but for their kids as well. There are five simple things you can do t...o protect yourself and greatly reduce your risk of skin cancer. -Slip on sun-protective clothing -Slop on SPF30 (or higher) broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen at least 20 minutes before you go outdoors and reapply every two hours afterwards -Slap on a broad-brim hat to protect your face, head, neck and ears. -Seek shade -Slide on sunglasses make sure they meet Australian standards A combination of these five measures, along with getting to know your skin and regularly checking for any changes are key. The time to stop cancer is before it starts. Let’s make the future cancer free. #nationalskincanceractionweek #cancercouncil

Many are unaware of this risk. Having a regular Heart Health Check with your GP will help you better understand your risk of a heart attack or stroke. Most importantly, your GP and nurse can support you to lower this risk. A Heart Health Check is a 20-minute check-up with your GP to assess your risk of having... a heart attack or stroke. If you're 45 years old and over, or 30 years old and over if you're of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, you should book your Heart Health Check today. Heart Health Checks for these age groups are covered by Medicare.

16.01.2022 Did you know that your heart is the size of your fist and the strongest muscle in your body? It started beating about three weeks after you were conceived. If you live to be 70, it will have beaten two and a half billion times. However, although impressive and strong, your heart can also become vulnerable from habitual risk factors like smoking, eating an unhealthy diet or putting it under stress. Controlling key risk factors and monitoring your blood pressure regularly may r...educe an individual’s risk of cardiovascular disease. Tomorrow, it will be #WorldHeartDay 2020. A chance to shine a spotlight on #heartdisease as the world continues to fight #COVID19. Never have #healthyhearts been more important. #UseHeart to make better choices. Say no to tobacco, eat a healthy diet with lots of fruit and vegetables & get plenty of exercise. Help your loved ones to do the same.

15.01.2022 According to the World Health Organization (WHO): by 2020, two-thirds of global diseases will be the result of lifestyle choices that include lack of exercise and overall physical activity, poor diet and obesity. Physical activity is any activity that gets your body moving, makes your breathing become quicker and your heart beat faster. You can be physically active in many different ways, at any time of day. Doing any physical activity is better than doing none. Be active o...n most, preferably all, days every week. Australia's National Physical Activity Guidelines suggest 150 to 300 minutes (2 to 5 hours) of moderate intensity physical activity or 75 to 150 minutes (1 to 2 hours) of vigorous intensity physical activity, or an equivalent combination of both moderate and vigorous activities each week. They also advise muscle strengthening activities on at least 2 days each week. If you are new to physical activity or are concerned about the safety of being (more) active, speak to your GP about the most suitable activities for you.

13.01.2022 It's finally spring! The days are getting longer, flowers are starting to bloom, the weather is warming up and oh, unfortunately asthma and allergy triggers are making their seasonal appearance. Asthma is a chronic condition in which the airways of the lungs become inflamed and narrow, often due to one or more triggers in the environment. Up to 80 percent of children and half of adults with asthma experience attacks when they come in contact with specific allergens. It’s important to recognize what your triggers are, so you can create a plan of action with your GP. This is important as you will be able to breathe better and make physical activities more enjoyable.

10.01.2022 October is Mental Health Month. Each year, 1 in 5 Australians experience a mental health issue. Approximately half of all individuals (45%) will experience issues with mental health in their lifetime. This could be you, a loved one, a family member, a friend, a colleague, a neighbour. People struggling with mental health issues often find themselves isolated, lonely and left to cope on their own. Mental Health Month is a yearly reminder of the responsibility we all share to reach out and support those in the community who suffer in silence. Speak to your experienced GP about your mental health this month.

08.01.2022 Dementia is not a single disease; it’s an overall term that covers a wide range of specific medical conditions caused by abnormal brain changes. These changes trigger a decline in thinking skills severe enough to impair daily life and independent function. They also affect behavior, feelings and relationships. Most people with dementia are older, but it is important to remember that not all older people get dementia. It is not a normal part of ageing. At present there is no ...prevention or cure for most forms of dementia. However, some medications have been found to reduce some symptoms. Support is vital for people with dementia. The help of families, friends and carers can make a positive difference to managing the condition. If you or someone you know is showing symptoms suggestive of dementia, speak to your GP as an early diagnosis will mean early access to support, information and medication.

04.01.2022 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month Most women that are diagnosed with breast cancer are over the age of 50 but younger women also get breast cancer. In fact, 1 in 8 women are diagnosed during their lifetime. If breast cancer is discovered in its early stages, there is a great chance of recovery. This is why it is so crucial for all women to check their breasts on a regular basis for any changes. Remember you don’t need to be an expert or use a special technique to chec...k your breasts. Changes to look for include: -a new lump or lumpiness, especially if it's only in one breast -a change in the size or shape of your breast -a change to the nipple, such as crusting, ulcer, redness or inversion -a nipple discharge that occurs without squeezing -a change in the skin of your breast such as redness or dimpling -an unusual pain that doesn't go away. Most changes aren’t due to breast cancer but it’s important to see your GP without delay if you notice any of these changes.

02.01.2022 RUOK Day 2020 might be coming to an end but the conversations shouldn’t stop. Any day you’re concerned someone’s struggling, trust your gut and ask Are you OK? Because a conversation could change a life. Never underestimate how supportive and helpful that very small question can be. For immediate support contact Lifeline on 13 11 14.

02.01.2022 Every year over 5,700 women are diagnosed with breast or gynaecological cancer. Their lives will change in an instant, as will the people around them. By hosting a pink event (or even actively wearing pink!) you will be making a difference in the fight against women's cancer. Host a pink-themed party, morning tea, trivia night or other events to raise money for women's cancers. Do you hold a regular barbecue, book club, bingo night or mother’s group? Why not make the next on...e pink-themed? You could try charging a ticket price, bringing in pink food to sell or getting your hands on prizes to raffle off. Why? Because you will be funding ground-breaking research, which is crucial if we want to find better ways to prevent and treat cancer, and of course, save lives. So go pink for a very worthy cause. Together, we can raise awareness and work towards a day where breast and gynaecological cancers are no more.
