Townsville University Hospital director of cardiology Dr Raibhan Yadav said that despite its prevalence, most heart disease was preventable. Townsville has leading numbers in obesity, we have a number of people living rurally who sometimes ignore symptoms or find it difficult to access services, we have a large mining population and our First Nation people have a number of additional cardiac issues to deal with, Dr Yadav said. The messaging is clear; move at least 30 minutes per day, eat healthy meals, stop smoking, limit drinking and don’t do illicit drugs, and have a regular GP; simple lifestyle changes can make a huge difference to heart health. Dr Yadav said it was important to know the symptoms of an unhealthy heart before the issue became deadly. Symptoms of heart disease will vary depending on what type of illness you have, Dr Yadav said. Some of the things you should never ignore include chest discomfort, tightness or pressure. Shortness of breath can also indicate something not right, as well as chest discomfort radiating to the arms, or discomfort in the neck, jaw, throat, upper abdomen or back. You should also see your GP if you are experiencing fluttering in your chest, irregular heartbeats, light-headedness or dizziness as these could indicate heart arrhythmias. Dr Yadav said the key message was to live a healthy lifestyle, and create a regular relationship with your GP. Having a regular GP means they will be able to monitor for any irregularities or changes in your health as well as monitoring blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and to get help with stopping smoking, Dr Yadav said.
