25.01.2022 In Australia, police in all states and territories, have the right to strip search a person between the ages of 10 and 18. In NSW, the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission heard during public hearings into police strip searches, young women were directed to take off all their clothes while a police officer got underneath them. Redfern Legal Centre is advocating to reform strip search laws.

16.01.2022 This year, RLC uncovered shocking police statistics that show that NSW Police have conducted 271 strip-searches on children in the past two years. (More info: bit.ly/3h9SD6f) Ninety-six children were strip-searched in the last year alone, and a disproportionate number of those (20%) were Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, including an 11-year-old child. Horrific stories of police strip searches continue to come to light, including from children who have been dire...cted to strip naked without the support of a parent or guardian present. You can help support our call for law reform to ensure young people and children are not exposed to harmful strip searches by donating to support our work. 13.01.2022 Break(danc)ing news!

11.01.2022 "The report has found that police are not applying the law correctly and that a number of people are being strip searched unlawfully This is a time for the Government to make real change and to ensure that police are adhering to the law when it comes to strip searches," RLC police accountability solicitor, Samantha Lee said. I have taken many instructions now from young people who have been strip searched, most of them are in tears when they are describing what happened to them. The only way I can sum it up is they are presenting as if they have been sexually assaulted."

08.01.2022 Over the last year, the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission has played an instrumental role in shedding light on unlawful and harmful strip searches conducted by NSW Police. But while police have at their discretion some of the widest reaching powers available to a government authority, the independent government body that monitors police accountability is subject to ever-dwindling resources. Without a well-funded independent police watchdog, these stories will simply not be heard.

06.01.2022 Congratulations to UNSW Law academics Dr Michael Grewcock and Dr Vicki Sentas, who have received awards for their research report, 'Rethinking Strip Searches in NSW', commissioned by RLC to reform unjust strip search law. bit.ly/2J1Dbwc
