22.01.2022 Urgent Reminder: Single Touch Payroll (STP) - At the Sage session for accountants today #STP We are reminded yet again of the looming the start date for Single Touch Payroll. For businesses with 19 or fewer employees, this becomes mandatory from 1 July, 2019. And thats not far away at all! For other businesses, this is already law. STP is a mandatory new way of reporting your payroll data to the ATO electronically. This is done at the same time as you pay your wages, and no...t at the end of the year (as was done previously). Information like wages, including allowances and deductions, tax withheld and superannuation liability is required to be reported using a compliant payroll software application. So if you currently do not use any software to process your payroll, youll need to either start using an STP-compliant one, or you can outsource this to someone like an accountant or bookkeeper or payroll service provider before 1st July. Unfortunately the ATO will not be accepting your Excel spreadsheets. The upside of this is that you will no longer need to prepare and provide payment summaries (group certificates) to your employees, and youll also no longer need to do the annual summary reporting to the ATO. 08.01.2022 Investment Property - Inspection Expenses Had a client ask a question on claiming claiming travel and other expenses associated with an investment property. Q1: If an individual owns a property interstate or overseas; he can visit the dwelling twice a year and expense his trip, right?... A1: Yes, your expenses for travelling to your investment property for the purposes of periodic inspection are allowable deductions. This can also be for the purpose of for example, carrying out repairs, organising repairs, meeting your real estate agent, attending body corporate meetings, etc.. BTW, travelling expenses for the purpose of viewing potential properties to buy, are NOT deductible. The property must be an existing rental property. Q2: If for example the property is entirely owned by a husband, can his wife go and view the property on his behalf and for the husband to expense her trip from his taxes? A2: Yes, if the purpose is an allowable one, the expense would be allowable. it is advisable for the husband to reimburse the wife for the expenditure with receipts. Note: If the travel is overseas, there are additional rules that apply to overseas travel. Happy to provided more info on this if required. #investmentproperty #negativegearing #aussietax

06.01.2022 Came across an ABC news story about this place in Melbourne, called The Soup Place, that has set up a system to let customers pay-it-forward, ie. pay a bit extra so that someone else in need can have a hot soup. Check out the ABC clip on their page.
