25.01.2022 So Amazon S3 had a major outage and it turns out that someone made a command line error. Many years ago as a network administrator, it was obvious to me how essential and how powerful the command line is for your work, but it was also clear (after a couple of painful experiences!) how easy it made it to stuff things up! As Spiderman says "With great power comes great responsibility." This ties in nicely with the Oscars problem and the comment that we need to Design for Error.... The people building command line interfaces rarely, if ever, think about the possibility of error, so when I see a headline about human error, my thought is that the error wasn't really made by the guy who entered the wrong parameter, but by the developer who allows a simple error by a user to occur and bring down a huge number of servers across the world http://www.startupsmart.com.au//massive-amazon-web-servic/

25.01.2022 Interesting example on how bad the UX can be and how easy it can be to improve it, if we don't take the easy way out for building systems! It also shows the real value in talking to your user :-) https://medium.com//introducing-a-new-digital-application-

23.01.2022 So we all saw the mixup at the Oscars over La-La Land and Moonlight. The article does a good job of showing how the mistake could have been avoided by a better design for the announcement cards. Donald Norman who authored "The design of everyday things" has as one of his major principles Design for Error. This is a key idea on the way to a good user experience! The article takes a little why to get going, but its a nice example of the power of good design. And I fully agree ...with this: "I don’t blame Dunaway or Beatty for this. This was the fault of two entities: whoever was in charge of the design of the winning cards (Was it really a design? C’mon.) and the unfortunate person who handed them the wrong envelope." We should very rarely, if ever, blame the user. http://www.vox.com//20/3/1/14777110/typography-oscars-2017

22.01.2022 IT strategy is a key part of the IS sphere and despite what some people might think, it's not easy especially in a digital business. This is a good look at Twitter and what strategy they should be taking. Personally, I've always been disappointed in Twitter, I find it very difficult to get what I want out of it without being swamped by the gigantic firehose of data streaming out of it. https://stratechery.com/2017/twitter-live-and-luck/

20.01.2022 An interesting IS case study which illustrates well, that even when you have an amazing technological innovation like Watson, that the people and management issues can still sink your project completely! https://arstechnica.com//ibms-watson-proves-useful-at-fig/

17.01.2022 So the biggest news in IT security at the moment is the Wikileaks exposure of the Equation Group aka the CIA, which is only surprising in that they weren't the NSA. Life only gets more difficult in this sphere :-( http://theconversation.com/wikileaks-vault-7-reveals-stagge

17.01.2022 Design is one of the key activities for the IS professional and as time goes on, we're needing to apply our design skills in broader and broader areas such as software design, database design, UX design, business process design and more. So, it's good to look at design in all its facets for inspiration and the London Underground map is inspirational! Compare it to its predecessor ;-) http://theconversation.com/sublime-design-the-london-underg

13.01.2022 The School has been trying to buy a Microsoft hololens to try it out and we've failed so far, as they are very difficult to get hold of everywhere seems to be sold out. This article is long but it's a good look at how they are being used to solve real business problems and are more than just a gimmick https://arstechnica.com//our-new-mixed-reality-early-adopt

12.01.2022 Every year I get more and more pessimistic about the state of IT security :-( One of the scarier stories I've seen lately, if your server is already infected when it arrives at your organisation, what hope is there? https://arstechnica.com//apple-axed-supermicro-servers-fr/

12.01.2022 It's amazing how much money people will spend on satisfying their collector habit, especially for a computer that has less power than a calculator has today :-) https://arstechnica.com//one-of-eight-remaining-functiona/

08.01.2022 An good article on best employers for graduates. It's interesting that Thoughtworks is no. 1 as they are in IT and are huge proponents of Agile and a people-centred approach to building software, it obviously runs through into all the other aspects of the company as well! I'm perplexed by this part of the article though - At the time, Melbourne University engineering student Robert Holt told StartupSmart there is a belief that working for a startup straight out of university... would diminish your employability. I've never heard this in 25 years in the industry, but maybe I'm just not listening in the right places? What do others think? http://www.startupsmart.com.au//atlassian-is-one-of-austr/
