24.01.2022 Welcome Professor Tüüne-Kristin Vaikla! We are pleased to announce that Professor Vaikla has been appointed as an Adjunct Professor in the Interior Design discipline! Tüüne-Kristin is an esteemed interior designer, artist, curator and editor based in Estonia whose practice contributes to the profession and academy locally and globally in significant and impactful ways. She was awarded a practice-research PhD from the Estonian Academy of Arts (EAA) and continues to have ongoi...ng involvement in our RMIT Practice Research Symposium in Barcelona. Tüüne-Kristin is a board member of the European Council of Interior Architects where she advocates the role of education in relation to the profession and the value of practice-research PhDs for practitioners. In 2013, RMIT Interior Design invited Tüüne-Kristin as an International Visiting Scholar to Melbourne to offer a specialisation course to our undergraduate interior design students. In May this year, she has been appointed Head of the Department of Interior Architecture and Visiting Professor at the EAA. She is also regularly invited to offer Masters workshops at universities including the University of Antwerp. Tüüne-Kristin was the commissioned curator for the Estonian Pavilion as part of the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale the installation How Long is the Life of Building? was a re-presentation of a much larger and complex urban, social and culture project by her that addressed the past, present and future of Linnahall. Formerly the V.I. Lenin Palace of Culture and Sport built for the Soviet Olympic Games in 1980, Linnahall now lies in empty and the question of the future of this large public space is an ongoing concern for the citizens and council of Tallinn. From 2014 to 2017, she initiated and convened a series of symposiums with the aim of positioning Interior Architecture and Design practice in critical contemporary social and cultural debates. Inviting practitioners and educators from around the world, she asks them to address questions about the relation between theory and practice, the impact of space in relation to identity, society, culture and migration. The first three symposiums took place

16.01.2022 THIS SATURDAY 4pm conversation 5pm - 7pm exhibition at Schoolhouse Studios Collingwood ~ becoming [in]determinate ~ Global Intensive Design Studio, Bachelor of Interior Design (Honours), School of Architecture and Urban Design, RMIT University. Hamtramck and Detroit, Michigan, USA 2019 becoming [in]determinate was an exploratory and process-based interior design travel studio, immersing students in the cities of Hamtramck and Detroit, Michigan, USA for three weeks in June and... July 2019. During this time, RMIT Bachelor of Interior Design (Honours) students collaborated with students, residents and communities from these two cities. The studio posited that cities are a multitude of situational interiors, where the indeterminate is observed through the force of duration; immersion in time as flow. Having inherent curiosities to notions of process, time and duration, these multitude of situational interiors were negotiated with a process-based set of techniques, foregrounding duration. Engaging in Detroits temporality, the studio analysed and speculated on the different scales of time in operation within its urban interior. Through this, the temporal, material and immaterial are considered as a dynamic and confluence of forces, assembled in time, materialising immateriality. By foregrounding duration in urban interior practice, it is a practising in time, then making relations with space, place and site. The vacant Detroit Water and Sewerage Department was used as a site for exploration, experimentation, speculation and making connections and relations with the broader Hamtramck and Detroit communities. 10.01.2022 Master of Interior Design Co Paradise Studio In 2005, pioneer Brad Neuberg arguably established the first coworking space around a table in San Fransico *. For him it was an attempt to reconsider the economic and social constraint he faced as a self employed worker. 15 years on, this phenomenon is now an established workplace typology, a significant industry of global and local brands with a broad variety of business and community models. *Brad Neuberg http://codinginpara...dise.org//coworking-community-for-devel This semester, the Master of Interior Design in partnership with @batessmart has been examining the future potential of coworking spaces. The design studio Co-Paradise led by Dr Anthony Fryatt (RMIT) and Michelle Skinner (Bates Smart) is particularly timely given the implications of Covid-19 on the way we all work. The following images are part of some preliminary investigations by Chee Yung Siau, a 1st year student in the program. @interiordesign.rmit.masters

08.01.2022 RMIT Interior Design welcomes Dr Adam Nash. His practice of the digital/virtual will contribute significantly to the emergence of spatial and temporal technologies that will lead future interior design practice. A digital artist, composer, programmer, performer, teacher and writer, Adam is widely recognized as one of the most original artists working in virtual environments and mixed-reality technology, exploring them as sites of playable art. Working in a post-convergent id...iom, he uses the web, game engines, virtual environments, generative and procedural programming, data and motion capture, artificial intelligence, synthetic evolution, audio, vision and live performance. His work has been presented in galleries, festivals and online in Australia, Europe, Asia and The Americas, including the Venice Biennale, the National Gallery of Victoria and the National Portrait Gallery of Australia. He was the recipient of the inaugural Australia Council Multi-User Virtual Environment Artist in Residence grant.Adams academic writing explores the ontology and the aesthetics of the digital, as well as the connection between the digital and philosophical notions of the virtual. In March this year, he returned from a 6-week trip aboard the Aurora Australis - a scientific research vessel that has been in operation between Australia and Antarctica for 30 years. Its final voyage took place in February this year and Adam together with his colleague, Dr John McCormick of the Centre for Transformative Media Technologies at Swinburne University (as Australian Antarctic Division + ANAT Arts Fellows) mapped the interior and exterior of the ship using lidar scanning and photogrammetry, and collected data on the flows and people of the ship using motion capture and ambisonic audio recording throughout the voyage. An immersive, interactive exhibition of the experience will be designed and tour Australia and internationally. Prior to joining Interior Design, Adam was Associate Dean of Digital Design, RMIT School of Design. He joins Interior Design in the role of Associate Professor. 07.01.2022 Colleagues from Interior Design, School of Architecture and Urban Design acknowledge, with sadness, the passing of John Andrews last weekend. John made a profound contribution as Professor of Interior Design from 1990 to 2001 and as Program Director from 1990 to 1997. On arriving from London, he transformed the program through his passion for conditions of spatiality, interiority and sociality. His legacy manifests in the practices of those whom he taught and with whom he wor...ked. THE INTERIOR, Johns signature contribution, embodied his aspirations for the discipline through a careful curation of beautiful images and thought-provoking essays. The launch of the first volume SPARK via a tug boat arriving at the Duke & Orrs Dry Dock in Melbourne still resonates as a vibrant memory for those who were there. We send our deepest condolences to his family and friends. See more
