14.01.2022 The University of Newcastles bi-annual creative practice Research Intensive (14-15 September) accompanied the Peripheries exhibition that included projects from postgraduate students, staff and supervisors within the School who are engaged with creative practice research. The Research Intensive was held at Watt Space Gallery, which was designed and completed in 2015 by one of UoNs practice-based PhD candidates. The Peripheries exhibition is the second in the School of Architecture and Built Environment series of design research at UoN, and it delivers the marked difference of more pronounced confidence. In some ways, it celebrates a coming of age, because our first creative practice PhD candidate will be examined. In other ways, it offers up a precise moment of reflection. Sue Anne Ware.
14.01.2022 PRS lecture by William Myers Writer, Guest Curator, Rhode Island School of Design Biodesign: An Emerging Mutualism... Saturday 20 October 2018 | 5 - 5:45pm Lecture theatre, ground level, RMIT Design Hub Followed by book launches from 5:45pm by William Myers, Dorita Hannah, Janine Randerson, Brad Haylock and Gini Lee. All welcome! William Myers presentation will introduce the developing practice of integrating design with biological systems, often to achieve improved ecological performance. In contrast to design that mimics nature or draws on biology for inspiration, biodesign incorporates living organisms into design as support structures, material sources, energy generators, security measures, and air purifiers, just to name a few possibilities. William Myers is a freelance curator and author based in Amsterdam. He has worked for MoMA, the Guggenheim Museum, Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt, Science Gallery Dublin, Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam, and Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). His widely-acclaimed books Biodesign and Bioart focus on the links between scientific advances and new developments in art and design.
